Maud: A Novel Inspired by the Life of L.M. Montgomery
Maud: A Novel Inspired by the Life of L.M. Montgomery | Melanie Fishbane
38 posts | 14 read | 56 to read
For the first time ever, a young novel about the teen years of L.M. Montgomery, the author who brought us ANNE OF GREEN GABLES. Fourteen-year-old Lucy Maud Montgomery -- Maud to her friends -- has a dream: to go to college and become a writer, just like her idol, Louisa May Alcott. But living with her grandparents on Prince Edward Island, she worries that this dream will never come true. Her grandfather has strong opinions about a woman's place in the world, and they do not include spending good money on college. Luckily, she has a teacher to believe in her, and good friends to support her, including Nate, the Baptist minister's stepson and the smartest boy in the class. If only he weren't a Baptist; her Presbyterian grandparents would never approve. Then again, Maud isn't sure she wants to settle down with a boy -- her dreams of being a writer are much more important. But life changes for Maud when she goes out West to live with her father and his new wife and daughter. Her new home offers her another chance at love, as well as attending school, but tensions increase as Maud discovers her stepmother's plans for her, which threaten Maud's future -- and her happiness forever."

Catching up on a belated review of this #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead! This YA historical fiction based on L.M. Montgomery‘s teen years felt a bit lacking for me. Of course the author had to work within the events of Maud‘s life, but I thought the narrative needed a bit more shaping or different framing, to make it more of a cohesive whole—as well as more depth of characterization all around. Similarly, the ending felt abrupt and a bit unfinished.⤵️

BarbaraJean (Continued) Also, as I read, I kept trying to match up the narrative with what I knew of LMM‘s life, and I was distracted by wondering what was elaboration or invention. That‘s more my own issue rather than the writing, but it was one reason this didn‘t quite work for me, at least not as well as other historical fiction I‘ve read. It was interesting overall, but not as satisfying as I‘d hoped! 1y

#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead - Maud discussion part 5

Do you think the story works on its own, without previous knowledge of LMM‘s books and/or her life? Would you have enjoyed the book without the reader having any context on LMM and her writing? (Or is the connection to LMM kind of the point?!)

BarbaraJean I don‘t think this really worked for me as a standalone. No doubt the author is a bit constrained by the events of Maud‘s life, but I thought the narrative needed a bit more shaping or different framing, to make it more of a cohesive whole, and for it to work as its own story. Similarly with the ending—it felt abrupt and a bit unfinished. But then I have difficulty faulting the book for that, because of course it‘s not the end of Maud‘s life! 1y
lauraisntwilder I think I would've enjoyed it less if I hadn't read House of Dreams. 1y

#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead - Maud discussion part 4

You could argue that Maud has three main loves in this book: Nate Lockhart, Will Pritchard, and her dreams of education and a writing career.
What are some of the similarities and differences in Maud‘s relationships with Nate and Will?
What did you think of how the book depicts Maud‘s ambitions and the role writing plays in her life?

#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead - Maud discussion part 3

What did you think of the way Maud‘s family relationships were portrayed: Maud‘s grandparents, Father and Mrs. Montgomery, her aunts and cousins? What other relationships stuck out to you as particularly formative for Maud (besides Nate and Will… they get their own question!)

BarbaraJean When reading House of Dreams, I was struck by the support LMM received from her grandmother, even though her grandmother didn't seem sympathetic. I liked seeing that represented here & really liked the way Fishbane showed moments of connection between the two, like with the Commonplace Book. The conversations with Aunt Annie and Aunt Emily also stood out to me, especially the parallels with Aunt Emily taking care of Maud after her mother died.

#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead - Maud discussion part 2

I wasn‘t aware that LMM was influenced by Alcott and Little Women, but I enjoyed the references within the novel, and the connections that Fishbane draws out. What connections do you see between Little Women and LMM‘s life and/or her books?

BarbaraJean I came across this post about the connections between the two authors and their work—I found the comparison between the two proposals particularly interesting!
https://www.anneofgreengables.com/blog-posts/lucy-maud-montgomery-and-louisa-may...
1y
lauraisntwilder I've always thought Anne and Jo had a lot in common, regardless of their family backgrounds--the desire to write, unwanted proposals, needing to be told to write what they knew, etc. I've actually never read Little Women (to my shame), so I'm basing this off adaptations. 1y
BarbaraJean @lauraisntwilder I've only read Little Women once, and it was over 15 years ago, so my memory of the book is a little tenuous! But the commonalities you mentioned all ring true, and a lot of them are parallels to Maud herself, I think. I see those same threads in the Emily books, too. Fishbane brings out the “write what you know“ theme with Maud, and both Maud and Jo prioritize writing over marriage as well. 1y

#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead - Maud discussion part 1

Maud is a work of fiction, and the author is quick to point out that it‘s not a biography. Did the book work for you as historical fiction? Or was it distracting to wonder what was biographical and what was fictional?

BarbaraJean I couldn‘t help but compare this book to House of Dreams and The Alpine Path, trying to match up the narrative with what I knew of LMM‘s life. I was distracted by trying to figure out what was elaboration or invention. Because of that (and maybe other reasons), it didn‘t quite work for me, at least not as well as other historical fiction I‘ve read. 1y
BarbaraJean The author noted that LMM‘s own autobiographical work (Alpine Path and her journals) was clearly curated and selectively presented (even her journals seem to have an audience in mind). I find it interesting when it‘s the author who‘s editing the presentation of their own life—but with this book, I found it difficult to enjoy the story on its own terms. Is it just me, or did other people have the same issue? 1y
lauraisntwilder I was okay with as fiction, but I did think the author leaned too much into telling us how everyone felt, rather than showing. There were long sections of exposition without dialogue. It felt like she had a lot of material to cover and didn't always do it well. 1y

I finished this one today for the #kindredspiritsbuddyread. I won't say too much ahead of our discussion, but I enjoyed this. Two thoughts -- 1, I wish there was a sequel covering Montgomery's adult life, and 2, the flowers on the cover should be lupines (this cover is pretty though).

BarbaraJean Yes to a sequel! Her years of college and teaching, and her early career, would be so interesting to read in a novelized form. 1y

Saturday reading for #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead! I‘m enjoying this but also finding it a bit stressful, knowing the difficulties that Maud‘s life contained. I just started the Prince Albert section and am worried about what‘s in store for Maud! How is everyone‘s reading going? I‘m looking forward to discussing this next week!

I loved this well-researched fictional account about the teenage years of one of my favourite childhood authors. Reading it really opened my eyes as to how much of Montgomery's real life experiences became part of her fictional stories. Recommended for anyone who is a fan of the Anne of Green Gables series.

I took this book with me on holiday to Prince Edward Island • I adore green gables and have always been fascinated by the story• I felt like I was getting to Know Lucy in this book .... Like it was a door to Anne. L.M Is a magical writer full of so much passion and such a natural with words. It was a fantastic book. I enjoyed every second . The author: Melanie Fishbane wrote it with love & care. What a beautiful story about a beautiful woman. ✌🏼️

To sum it up in a word: charming. It started off a little shaky, with it feeling like the author was basically grafting Anne's personality onto L.M. Montgomery's life, but Maud grew and matured so much throughout the book that that didn't last long. It's a sweet comfort read, especially if you love Anne of Green Gables and want to get some insight into its creator. #bookreview #bibliophile #booknerd #historicalfiction #YA

I absolutely love Anne of Green Gables and have never seen any historical fiction focused on L.M Montgomery, so I am thrilled to be diving into this one! I've read mixed reviews so I hope I'm of the more positive persuasion, but I guess we'll wait and see!

This book enraged me. I hated it so much and I don't understand why it has such good reviews. Maud was so annoying and childish through the first half and the dialogue was just terrible. I hated the writing. If I had not paid full price for this book I would have bailed. This was a huge disappointment.

Love love love love love. There were squeaks of delight, heart palpitations, and stomach butterflies involved in the reading of this book. I felt like I was in middle school again, which Is awesome, because my middle school self was pure of heart and soul. I got a distinctly Little House on the Prairie vibe from the second half that I wasn't expecting, but then again, I didn't know about Montgomery' time out west. 10/10 would recommend.

I truly enjoyed this historical fiction about a teenaged Lucy Maud Montgomery! It covers time spent living with her grandparents, going to live with her father, and coming back to her grandparents' home while dreaming of becoming a writer and continuously working towards more education along with some romance.

If you enjoy L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Grren Gables and her other books, I highly recommend this.
