New York Times Book of New York
New York Times Book of New York: Stories of the People, the Streets, and the Life of the City Past and Present | The New York Times
14 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
This unique volume uncovers the most fascinating and compelling stories from The New York Times about the city the paper calls home. More than 200 articles and an abundance of photographs, illustrations, maps, and graphs from the preeminent newspaper in the world take a look at the history and personality of the world's most influential city. Read firsthand accounts of the subway opening in 1904 and the day the Metrocard was introduced; the fall of Tammany Hall and recurring corruption in city politics; the Son of Sam murders; jazz clubs in the 1920s and legendary performances at the Fillmore East; baseball's Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier at Brooklyn's storied Ebbets Field in 1947; the 1977 and 2004 blackouts; the openings and closings of the city's most beloved restaurants; and much more. Not just a historical account, this is a fascinating, sometimes funny, and often moving look at how people in New York live, eat, travel, mourn, fight, love, and celebrate. Organized by theme, the book includes original writings on all topics related to city life, including art, architecture, transportation, politics, neighborhoods, people, sports, business, food, and more. Includes articles from such well-known Times writers as Meyer Berger, Gay Talese, Anna Quindlen, Israel Shenker, Brooks Atkinson, Frank Rich, Ada Louise Huxtable, John Kieran, Russell Baker, and more. Special contributors who have written about New York for the Times include Paul Auster, Woody Allen, and E.B. White, among others.

Hubby and I are heading to NY again for a few days (we are coming for a concert at MSG in July) any of my NY Litten friends have any recommendations on some things to see. We will be around Central Park and Times Square. We've already done most touristy stuff before.

Not technically book related but I‘ve never seen an actual New York Times in person and I got excited! (Funny how I‘m in France to see it...! 😂)

Absolute bliss sitting outside, reading in the sun in Paris, with a beer 😍🇫🇷

Dulcinella Enjoy! 7y

Top 10 Books of 2017 from the book editors of THE NEW YORK TIMES 💕
How many have you read?! I‘m only 3/10😣

Cathythoughts 2/10 🙄 7y
Cinfhen Ha, I bailed on one and own another....but still 😕these lists are very subjective @Cathythoughts 7y
Cinfhen How‘s your trip?!? 7y
See All 48 Comments
Olivia306 2/10 ? but I currently have on my TBR pile "Autumn" and "Prearie Fires". Also, I am not that excited about some of the titles on this list. 7y
Cathythoughts Going great ! Thankyou X (edited) 7y
Kalalalatja 4/10 - but there are 4 of them I haven't even heard of 😳 7y
LittleWonder Autumn and Exit West are in my favorites of 2017 7y
cocomass I‘m also at 3/10 but Exit West and Sing Unburied Sing we‘re so good 7y
Cathythoughts @Kalalalatja 😂😂I haven‘t heard of them all either 7y
mhillis I‘ve only read 1 so far! Waiting for holds on 3 of them though! 7y
Cinfhen @cocomass I agree!! I read those 2 and gave them both 5 stars my third was Pachinko, which I gave 4 stars. I have The Power & want to read PriestDaddy. I actually bailed on Autumn @LittleWonder I couldn't get into it🤷‍♀️ 7y
Cinfhen I know, I'm always surprised by these lists @Olivia306 @Kalalalatja @mhillis 7y
Marchpane Well... only 5 are fiction so... I've read 4 of those 5 😂 The one I didn't get to was Exit West, I've seen mixed reviews so it's still in TBR. 7y
Cinfhen Do you not read NF?! @Marchpane or just not as much...I try to do at least 2 NF a month but they tend to be “older” books 7y
KarenUK Just 1! 😔 7y
AmyG I am 3/10 too. I will read all the fiction ones....eventually. And I just picked up Priestdaddy. (edited) 7y
peaKnit I'm 3/10 too, but glad for some more possibilities. But where is The Heart's Invisible Furies?😱 7y
Marchpane @cinfhen I do read NF, just nowhere near as much as I do fiction! Plus 3 of the 5 here are US history which is not really my bag. But the other two (Priestdaddy & the Darwin book) are right up my street. 7y
DivaDiane 😱I‘m 0/10! Actually I‘m not surprised, I have really gotten out of the habit of reading the latest books, unless they are SFF, and then also not often. But there are a couple I would put on my TBR: The Power; Prairie Fires; and Sing, Unburied, Sing. 7y
Pamwurtzler I‘m 0/10 as well, though I think Exit West is supposed t be good. 7y
Reviewsbylola I‘ve read 4 but plan to start The Power this week! 7y
Ellen 3/10 glad to see Exit West get this love, it was fantastic and timely 7y
Cinfhen I loved Exit West too @Ellen it‘s gotten mixed reviews on Litsy @Pamwurtzler but I highly recommend 💚I‘m saving the Power for January @Reviewsbylola but I‘m curious to hear your thoughts 7y
Cinfhen I hadn‘t thought about that @Marchpane I wasn‘t aware this one has anything to do with US History,I thought it was more about science 7y
Cinfhen I loved sing @DivaDiane but a lot of Littens did not...I‘m a little surprised by the amount of NF on this list @peaknit @AmyG @KarenUK 7y
Cinfhen Oh, Prarie Fires is about US History @Marchpane my bad.... (edited) 7y
BookBelle84 I'm one of the few that didn't enjoy Exit West, but Pachinko has become one of my favourite books! 7y
Reviewsbylola There‘s a readalong for The Power starting today! You should join. 😉 7y
emilyhaldi I'm 6/10 ... Surprised about Grant- has anyone read this??? It's a real chunkster 😳 Autumn was one of my favs of the year I think 🧡 And I‘m verrryyy curious to see what you think of The Power!! 7y
Cinfhen I was thinking it would work for some challenge category but maybe I'll join! Thanks for the heads up @Reviewsbylola 7y
emilyhaldi @peaknit I agree!! That‘s a big miss 7y
emilyhaldi Also Cindy- have you read Priestdaddy? Feels a little random to have made this list but it was one of my fav botm choices this year!! So funny 7y
Reviewsbylola You should def join. I need the moral support. The urge to bail is strong and I haven‘t even started. 🤣🤣 7y
Cinfhen I have not read Priest Daddy and was surprised it made this list too, because I thought it's a little low brow for The NY Times, where as Grant is probably more respectable @emilyhaldi my OVERDRIVE still does not offer Priest Daddy... what happened with you & Power??? Did you bail?!? I know it's for the BOTM challenge @emilyhaldi 7y
Cinfhen I'll give it a go @Reviewsbylola why not?!? We can bail together! 7y
Reviewsbylola 🤣🤣 7y
Bklover I‘m surprised to see Prairie Fires. May have to check it out. 7y
TrishB 2/10 for me! Probably wouldn‘t read any of that NF though. 7y
JenlovesJT47 lol I haven't read any of them yet but I do own a couple of them! 😱 7y
Ms_T Just Pachinko for me at the moment but I have Exit West and Autumn to read this month, whilst The Power and Sing, Unburied, Sing are both on my TBR 😃 7y
BookwormM 3 for me 7y
minkyb I‘ve actually read a few. Must be Litsy‘s fault. 7y
tammysue 2 for me also. 7y
Cinfhen I‘m curious about Prairie Fires too @Bklover it‘s an interesting list @TrishB @JenlovesJT47 @Ms_T @BookwormM @minkyb @whatshesreadingnow I‘m surprised this NF didn‘t make the list 7y
Centique I haven‘t read any! But as you might guess from what I post I like to wait a few years. My TBR has me reading books released around 2000 at the moment. Every time you see me read a new release it‘s because some Litten made it sound too good to resist! #brokemyTBR 7y
Cinfhen 😂😂 @Centique I admire your restraint 🙌🏻if there is ever a new book you REALLY want please tag me...if I own it I'll be more than happy to mail it to you. I'm not one who holds onto books💕💕I prefer to share...honestly 7y
Centique @Cinfhen oh you‘re so lovely! I feel if I read a book while people are still busily talking about it I might believe the hype and then be disappointed. With older books, the world feels nice and quiet to me. I‘m an eccentric😂 😊 7y
Cinfhen I get it!! But if you ever change your mind, the offer stands @Centique 💗 7y

I‘ve only read five 😔. But many are on my TBR, and the number of books on my TBR just shot WAY up! http://forreadingaddicts.co.uk/quizzes/ny-times-100-notable-books-2017-many-read...

Karkar I have only read three. But like you many of them are in my TBR. 7y
Chelleo I only read 1 😱 7y
mcipher I haven‘t read ANY!! A few in my TBR but a lot I‘m not interested in reading, too. I guess your list depends on what you like! 7y
JamieArc These are also books published (I think) in 2017, so you have to be pretty intentional about reading new releases to have read many of them. 7y

I'm currently subscribing to the New York Times newspaper for my English writing and research class. I must say, I'm so happy the Professor had us do this instead of buying a text. We need to keep journalism alive, ESPECIALLY now. Just rec'd this letter today, thought it was interesting enough to post. I'm not sure if older Litizens will be able to read this ( I know I would need 3.00 readers for this one) but the youths will be able to. (yutes)

Laura317 Well, since I‘m no “yute”, I had to screenshot the post and blow up the letter. I think it is fantastic that the editor wrote. Makes me want to go subscribe to some large newspaper somewhere. (Our local paper is only a weekly, but we subscribe). 7y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @Laura317 I want to thank you!!! I forgot you can screenshot and enlarge!!! Oh my goodness!! You have no idea how many posts I pass bc I'm like...nope, can't see that...for young eyes only....lol... thank you so much!!! Yes, this letter really struck me. 7y

Louise Great letter! 👍 7y
Nute Wow! It‘s cool that a columnist took the time to write a letter thanking you for your subscription. The sheer power of thoughtfulness. The amazing strength of two little words...Thank You. Thanks for sharing. 7y

Books and Brunch! I really love Book Match, the new-in-print book advice column. I added three books from it to my TBR. Happy weekend, Littens!

Bookzombie That looks like Torchy's. I think I know where I'm going for lunch if it's not too crowded. 🌮🧀 7y

Please, please read. This is why reading is critical to humanity. Yes, it does get political (sorry about that). But I want you to read this because of the value and importance of books and reading to society. https://mobile.nytimes.com/2017/03/16/opinion/sunday/books-can-take-you-places-d...

Notafraidofwords Thanks for posting. 8y

Okay, I'll admit that I'm flagging and my eyes are getting totally heavy. I'm not going to have a ton of success at this #readathon I think. And perhaps it's cheating but I'm switching to reading the news for a half hour or so then passing out.
