Anya's Ghost
Anya's Ghost | Vera Brosgol
Anya could really use a friend. But her new BFF isn't kidding about the "Forever" part . . . Of all the things Anya expected to find at the bottom of an old well, a new friend was not one of them. Especially not a new friend who's been dead for a century. Falling down a well is bad enough, but Anya's normal life might actually be worse. She's embarrassed by her family, self-conscious about her body, and she's pretty much given up on fitting in at school. A new friendeven a ghostis just what she needs. Or so she thinks. Spooky, sardonic, and secretly sincere, Anya's Ghost is a wonderfully entertaining debut from author/artist Vera Brosgol.Anya's Ghost is a 2011 Kirkus Best Teen Books of the Year title. One of School Library Journal's Best Fiction Books of 2011.One of Horn Book's Best Fiction Books of 2011.Winner of the 2012 Eisner Award for Best Publication for Young Adults (Ages 12-17)

This was a great graphic novel that was a quick read this morning! Anya makes friends with a ghost, but then things take a turn and she has to figure out what to do. The art was really good and it was an engaging story! I always enjoy graphic novels from the :01 imprint.

Doing an entire graphic novel in grayscale is an unusual choice, but it suits the bleak mood of this story. This wasn‘t a story about happiness or inspiration, but it was filled with strong characters, especially with strong women, and the idea of perseverance came through really clearly. #WinterGames2021 #TeamGameSleighers @StayCurious

It has been years since I read this and it is just as charming as I remember. 😍

Librariana It's been a minute since I've read it, too, but I remember it as being very... atmospheric? Don't even know if that's really the descriptor I'm looking for, but close enough! 😁😊 I must also give you kudos on your lovely backdrop, autumnal colors, and decor! Chef's kiss! 👩‍🍳 3y

Awesome book. Love the black and white art for this story, wonderful character growth and jaw dropping plot twists. The story of a girl who falls down a well, makes friends with a ghost, and learns things about herself that she likes and doesn‘t like along the way.

This was a nice YA mix of cute and creepy. Anya is a misfit kid struggling with being Russian-American and being in an unhealthy friendship with a ghost who doesn‘t have her best interests at heart. I was a fair bit older than the target audience for this but I did really like it, would recommend to YA readers for sure.

This is the sort of read in which I kept thinking the story was about to take off and get interesting, but it failed to live up to the initial encounter between Anya and the ghost, Emily. Most disappointing, was Emily‘s lack of depth. The piece includes some positive themes, but it wasn‘t really worth the journey in my opinion.

Meh... I liked the artwork but otherwise was not over the moon about anything else here. Anya felt very one dimensional. The storyline was underwhelming. General teenager bad behavior on full display that I found to be annoying.
A high school girl skips school and accidentally falls into an old well or something and there is a skeleton down there along with a young girl‘s ghost who follows her out when she gets rescued.

TerriGreen This one looks so good, but I can‘t handle bad teenage behavior. 5y

I quite enjoyed this book, even though it was not what I was expecting. Anya is an immigrant who has done lots of work to lose her accent and fit in better. But she is still a bit of an outcast. One day she falls into a well and ends up taking a ghost with her when she is rescued. I liked this story. I love how the illustrator keeps everything in a blue tone with some occasional red. It makes the story stand out.

A misfit teen girl falls down a dry well. After two days, she's rescued, accidentally bringing a friendly ghost out with her. Oops! But is the ghost actually friendly?

This very dark graphic novel contains a surprising twist that kept me reading quickly. The darkness was refreshing, and I liked it quite a lot. It was not at all what I was expecting.

This was a great graphic novel. Anya hates everything and everyone. She doesn‘t have a lot of friends and doesn‘t try hard a school. One day she falls down a well and finds bones. She accidentally takes a bone with her and has a ghost friend. The ghost was murdered and Anya wants to help when weird things start happening.

My friend Mya at summer camp years ago told us this story and recommended this book to me.. two years later I‘m at the library calling her asking what book it is. Anya falls down a well after skipping school and down there is a skeleton with a ghost attached. The ghosts name is emily, emily seems like a friendly neighbourhood ghost.. but really, she was convicted with arson to two people.

MrsBabki I think I might like to read this. I wonder if Lakie has a copy? 5y

It's a gem. If you get the chance to read it, read it.

Story and artwork are great. The German translation is a bit weird in places (literal translation of fixed expressions,...).

Loved the art in this one more than the slightly spooky, supernatural coming of age story. Anya struggles at school with her lack of friends, immigrant background, and body image issues. So when she meets a friendly ghost, things start to look up. But it turns out her ghost is less Casper and more sinister. 👻💀☠️

After having this on my Libby hold list for months, it finally appeared! 😊 I enjoyed this graphic novel. Anya's family has immigrated to the US and Anya's having trouble fitting in at school. She does things to hide her heritage and it takes a shocking eye opener in the form of a ghost to get her to realize she can be a great person by accepting herself and her heritage.

A nice, quick read. Although it felt a bit rushed bc of how short it was. Still liked it regardless. I picked this up because of an awesome looking post for Vera‘s other book, Be Prepared (Sorry! Anya‘s Ghost is about a young woman who finds a dead body and it‘s attached ghost. Suffering from self esteem issues, Anya is thrilled when her new friend seems to be able to help her get all the things she wants in life… until she starts to question whether she really wants those things.

A beautiful story for teens about growing up and realizing that the grass isn‘t always greener on the other side. This one is a must read

Weaponxgirl @Tamra I read mostly older ages comics but if he likes superheroes I would recommend moongirl and devil dinosaur about a super genius 11 old girl that is completely age appropriate. Ms marvel might be a good choice too but obviously set in a superhero world. 6y

This book kind of gave me a whole new perspective on being an immigrant teenager nowadays, or a teenager in general. She was kind of “scared straight” by a ghost that just wanted to be cool but didn‘t think of consequences. I saw a teenager that couldn‘t have been more than 4‘ tall smoking in Oak Park yesterday, and I really criticized her until I read the end of this book. You never know what kids are going through and smoking could be ⬇️⬇️

Mimi28 Of that girl‘s problems. Anya stopped smoking at the end which I was really glad about. I was like - this how Oak Park teens rebel- please! Their parents probably make more in one month that I have my whole life, but this book changed my opinions on what goes on in the minds of teenagers- a little, lol. 4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 6y
