Day 20 of the #scarathlon photo challenge - Potion/Magic

I‘m sharing this book I‘ve had on my Goodreads TBR since 2016. I feel like I need to read it. I‘m in the process of decluttering a stack of magazines in my room. I would also like to declutter my closet in my room and get rid of books I‘m not going to reread. The extra bedroom in my house is being used for storage and it‘s a mess in there. My mom and I have too much stuff.

Trying to tidy up...

I think it's time to admit defeat. I have too many books 😭😭😭 I've officially run out of surfaces to stack them precariously on 😵

Contemplating another book trolley. A bigger one this time... And from now on I'm going to have to operate a one-in-two-out system. Maybe even a one-in-ten-out system.

I think for the next few months I'll have to read books I expect I won't want to keep 🙊

vivastory I think the 1 in 1 out is a good idea 📚 2y

Day 2 of being left to fend for myself. Am trying to get the house looking clean & tidy as a surprise for my parents when they return on Tuesday. The place looks worse than when I started so far 🙈

At least the hoover has run out of battery and Pickles has claimed me as her perch for this afternoon so I have an excuse to take a break.

Wish me luck... as soon as I've finished having kitty snuggles I'm going back in! 😭😭😭

I'm a little late to the Marie Kondo party, but have been meaning to read her book for quite sometime. I love organizing and having things orderly so I always enjoy these types of books. This one left me with some mixed feelings. While there were a lot of concepts I found intriguing, I'm not sure I can get behind the extremism of her method. I also found her section on books to be borderline offensive 😂 I had to jump up and find my husband so ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) I could rant to him about it. I loved the idea of touching everything you own & thinking about how it makes you feel, what its purpose is in your life, & deciding what to do with it based on your conclusions, but I'm not sure that I agree that your life is better just because you get rid of things that don't speak to you on some deep level. I also felt like Kondo came from a certain assumption of wealth - not necessarily that her ⬇ 3y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) readers are wealthy, per se, but the idea that it's “no big deal“ if you get rid of things now that later you actually need/end up repurchasing, or that if you only keep the clothes that spark joy, you may need to go get some new joy-sparking ones since you've just dumped a few trash bags of neutral-sparking shirts - that all seemed counterintuitive to me as someone who has had times in my life where penny-watching was important. ⬇ 3y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) All in all, I enjoyed reading this one & it's sparked a lot of conversation in our household as we discussed the merits & drawbacks of the KonMarie Method, but I don't see myself embracing this level of purging any time soon. I actually don't particularly feel smothered or stressed by my belongings & feel like I have a pretty healthy relationship with our local goodwill drop spot, & I'm just not convinced that getting rid of 3/4 of my ⬇ 3y
See All 18 Comments
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) belongings will magically bring inner peace. Still, I do recommend this one as an interesting read & can see myself utilizing some of Kondo's concepts - just none of the ones that deal with books!! 😂 3y
robinb Good review! As someone who needs to PURGE, do you have any better books to recommend? 😂 I'm pretty organized in every other way...just not as much with my household belongings. 😔 3y
TheAromaofBooks @robinb - LOL I know the feeling!! We used to move a lot when we were renters, but now that we've been in the same house for seven years, stuff accumulates a lot more easily!! This actually still may be a book you enjoy reading. It's really short & easy to read. I also like the way that she suggests going through your belongings by categories rather than by location (so, all your clothes no matter where they are, rather than your bedroom closet) ⬇ 3y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) and the order she lists basically has you start with things least-likely to be emotional & work your way into things that are harder to sort through, like mementoes & knickknacks. I think she's a little ambitious about how much “stuff“ people need/want, but I still think there are a lot of interesting methods to glean. 3y
TheAromaofBooks @robinb - I will also say that even though it isn't exactly about purging/getting rid of stuff, I absolutely loved the book The Nesting Place & found it so inspiration & comforting. The author talks about the importance of not worrying about perfection & instead focusing on making our homes warm, welcoming, & a place we want to be - which does involve cleaning/organizing, but also means thinking about what we want the purpose of different ⬇ 3y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) spaces to be & what we need to do to help those spaces fulfill a purpose that works for us. Thanks to that book our “dining nook“ turned into our pantry (which I LOVE) because it really made me think about what I actually needed from that space rather than what was “expected“ to be there! 3y
TheLudicReader Yeah, Kondo can pound sand when it comes to her opinion on books. 🤣 3y
Deblovestoread Great review! 3y
robinb @TheAromaofBooks Oh, TNP sounds wonderful!!! And that is really what we should be thinking about rather than purging as you said. In creating those cozy places in our homes our necessities would come into play naturally. Thanks for the rec….I‘m adding TNP to my TBR. 😘 3y
LazyOwl Great review, I agree with your sentiments 3y
Yuki_Onna I second @LazyOwl... Wonderful review!
You managed to put my mixed feelings towards what I've heard about KonMari into words... Thanks! 🙏
3y
TheAromaofBooks @TheLudicReader - It's rare that I have to literally set a book aside because I disagree so vehemently, especially one about housekeeping! 😂 3y
TheAromaofBooks @Kdgordon88 @LazyOwl @Yuki_Onna - Thank you!! I still think her book is worth reading because she has many interesting concepts, but I'm not convinced that her level of intensity is the path to contentment for everyone. 3y
TheAromaofBooks @robinb - It was definitely a book that changed my attitude towards home decorating & projects. I did a review of it on my blog back when I read it - https://thearomaofbooks.wordpress.com/2017/06/12/the-nesting-place-by-myquillyn-... - if you're interested. Originally I checked it out from the library, but I loved it so much that I bought my own copy & have gifted it several times as well! 3y

I actually watched the Netflix show first, which gave visual clarification for a lot of the concepts in her book. Marie Kondo is really open about her own journey, hang ups, and stories, which is admirable. She anthropomorphizes inanimate objects, with which I strongly relate. I think the only part I don‘t buy into is how easily she gets rid of sentimental things and books. Nonetheless, I do appreciate her ideas of discarding and organizing.

This book is on the best sellers list, has high ratings on Goodreads and so I was curious what all the hub bub was about. I tend to not read self help books.

I found no life changing magic. It felt like common sense on steroids sprinkled with fairy dust. She lost me with giving in adamant objects feelings. The author came off as pushy and self congratulatory. She did sprinkle in some of her failures to keep it balanced but it felt ungenuine.

BarbaraTheBibliophage I haven‘t read her book, although I‘m tempted just like you were. It‘s been such a big thing for so long now! Anyway, another friend posted this article about her that might explain the idea of inanimate things having feelings. Kinda. https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/marie-kondo-white-western-audineces_us_5c47... 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage p.s. My cousin‘s wife is named Gina Harrison. When I first saw you on Litsy, I thought you might be her! 🤪 6y
Gina @BarbaraTheBibliophage thanks for the article! I love other cultures and assumed as much but in my opinion an author should know who their audience is. Had she started the book with tie ins to her culture I think I would have seen the book differently. Ans she repeats herself ad nauseam. This is where having a good editor is paramount. 6y
See All 7 Comments
Gina @BarbaraTheBibliophage and I love your cousin-in laws name!! Too cute♡♡♡ 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Gina Agreed. I wonder why she wasn‘t more outright. Probably because she wanted to reach Christian readers who might be offended by Shinto beliefs. But repetitive writing is unforgivable. 6y
Gina @BarbaraTheBibliophage my guess is she is quite young and inexperienced so you are probably right. This is where an experienced editor can come to the resuce. She has quite the head for business so I figure as she grows with more life experience so too will her writing, perhaps. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Gina Now you made me look! She‘s 34, but this was her first publishing experience I think. Editing is everything! 6y

I finished listening to this yesterday and found that I liked this book more than I had anticipated! I'm going to have my husband listen to the book (it's only 5 hrs!) and I want to read it in physical format too. I've already started folding the babies clothes via her method.

BookBabe Good for you! 🙌🏻 I have been listening to the audiobook, but I‘m kind of feeling grumpy about it. I know she‘s trying to help, but it‘s mostly just making me feel bad. I don‘t know. I am tired of living with clutter and this little book has motivated me to try to change my living environment. I disagree with two statements. If I get rid of clothing which doesn‘t bring me joy, my work scrubs would go. They are not flattering. However, they assist in providing me with heat, shelter, and food so they stay. Yes, most of us have air and heat but we may still need that seasonal clothing based on work, travel, and pet needs.

Wife What about the advice to get rid of books?😳 6y
Nebklvr @Wife The advice is to get rid of books that dont bring you joy. I go through my books pretty regularly anyways. The rest bring me joy. They stay 6y
Blaire @Nebklvr @wife that‘s one of the things I liked about this book, the acknowledgement that different amounts of different types of items are right for people. So if books bring you joy then you keep them. It did help me sort through and donate a couple of boxes, but I still own probably a couple hundred. 6y

It takes about 70 pages of self-promotion before the book really begins. She has a tendency to ramble and repeat herself, so it would have been nice if there had been succinct lists for the suggested order and sub orders as well as questions to ask yourself. Over all, the information is good. This is the method that I have been using to attack my closet, without realizing it was a thing.

I can see why this book was so popular. It sent me on a full-blown cleaning and tidying streak. It says that if something does not bring you joy then you should give it away or toss it out, which I think is a little strong, but I have managed to part with a lot that was not contributing anything to my life and was making my living space cluttered.
