This was a really good young adult novel. The author handled serious topics in a believable way; showed that being in the right place at the right time sometimes matters a lot; and gave hope that fighting for relationships is valiant.

A #Booked21 #Hear/Here overachiever: I listened to this book set in an unnamed NJ town, speculated to be nearby Westfield (where the author was born.) Mentions of going down the shore and taking the train to the city felt familiar to me.
I was really hoping to enjoy this one, but it was just MEH. Fifteen year old Lucy's life is disrupted when she finds out her father had a brief affair and she has an 8 year old brother living IN TOWN. 😲⬇️
This book has been on my TBR for a long time- mostly because Andrew McCarthy wrote it and he is one of my biggest 80s crushes (Pretty in Pink, Less Than Zero, St. Elmo's Fire, swoon!). Just Fly Away is about a young teen who discovers that her father has a secret child, and that she has a half brother living just blocks away. It's a quiet novel, but a relatable one (not the secret child, but just learning your parents are human).

🎶I'd fly above the trees
Over the seas in all degrees
To anywhere I please
Oh I want to get away
I want to fly away🎶

When I picked this book up, of course, I thought of the actor Andrew McCarthy but I didn‘t realize it was actually him until I finished the book and read the back sleeve. This story is hard to get into and through the first 50 pages, I kept wanting to ditch it but there was something about sweet Lucy that made me hang in there. Now, that I know it was his first book, I understand the rough start. Hang in there, it is a tender read. #lovesimon
A compilation of fly books from my TBR list, one of which is written by my childhood crush, Andrew McCarthy! #learntofly #tuneintonovember
Three books from my #SuperSummerBookHaul which features #cursive 📝and there's something about the Keret memoir which calls to me #coverlovers #FallIntoBooks #AwesomeAutumnBooks All are #TBR 🙄
I'm emphatically Team Duckie, but that doesn't mean I can't check out a book that Blane wrote. #prettyinpinkforever
Words that resonate with this anxious girl. Saw Andrew McCarthy speak last night with Dani Shapiro for work. Author talks are the best.
I'm staying with my parents while I search for a house, so for now this is my #shelfie. All my other books are in storage...I miss them ☹️ #aprilbookshowers
SQUEEEEEEE! One of the best author events eva! He was so charming, funny and unassuming. Loved hearing about both his process and the story of how he came to write a YA novel. A natural storyteller and very down to Earth.
Atlanta peeps!! It's on! Tonight in Decatur.
I'm just a little excited! 😜🤗😬
Going to see Andrew McCarthy tomorrow night. 🤗Anyone have something pink I can borrow to wear??
The premise is excellent but it feel like it was simply hitting the YA checklist integrating family problems, first love, and an angry teenager. I also had a hard time believing I was reading a story written from the POV of a teen girl. However, while the beginning of the book was hard to get through, the relationship between Lucy and her grandfather was wonderful and should have actually been the emphasis and core of the story.
Had a great time hearing him speak and meeting him yesterday. Looking forward to starting this one.
I quite enjoyed this book. Eventually. Here is my review: https://trishtalkstexts.wordpress.com/2017/04/02/review-just-fly-away-by-andrew-... #netgalley #reviews #blogging
I feel like I am in a John Hughes movie as I gawk at actor/YA author Andrew McCarthy at #teenbookcon
Yesterday's #bookmail was the book I won in the #24in48 read-a-thon. I am not one for YA usually but there was no way I was passing up the chance to read Andrew McCarthy's first novel. Yep, that Andrew McCarthy! Always been a big fan so this is a treat for the 80's girl inside of me.
#FunPhotoFriday I'm beyond excited that Andrew McCarthy wrote a YA novel, that there's a sequel to The Hatching, that Pettina Gappah, Mohsin Hamid and Ali Smith have books coming out, and for Black Mad Wheel because it looks so good.
I was initially attracted to this book because of the author, Andrew McCarthy. Well, he's more than just a great actor! I was definitely pulled in to the story immediately. I cared about the characters, which is always the most important aspect of any book I read. I found Lucy to be a sympathetic character, and could completely understand her feelings about what she "found out" about her family. This is a great "Teen Read!"
I can not WAIT to dive into this one. I LOVE Andrew McCarthy! 😍 I hope he's as good of an author as he is an actor! 😬
