Water Museum: Stories | Luis Alberto Urrea

NAMED NOTABLE BOOK OF THE YEAR by "Washington Post," BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: "Kirkus Reviews," NPR, "Men's Journal" A new short story collection from Luis Alberto Urrea, bestselling author of "The Hummingbird's Daughter "and "The Devil's Highway." From one of America's preeminent literary voices comes a new story collection that proves once again why the writing of Luis Alberto Urrea has been called "wickedly good" ("Kansas City Star"), "cinematic and charged" ("Cleveland Plain Dealer)," " "and "studded with delights" ("Chicago Tribune)." Examining the borders between one nation and another, between one person and another, Urrea reveals his mastery of the short form. This collection includes the Edgar-award winning "Amapola" and his now-classic "Bid Farewell to Her Many Horses," which had the honor of being chosen for NPR's "Selected Shorts" not once but twice. Suffused with wanderlust, compassion, and no small amount of rock and roll, THE WATER MUSEUM is a collection that confirms Luis Alberto Urrea as an American master.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ These thirteen beautifully detailed stories share a common thread of grief and redemption. Every story is strong – my favorites being “Carnations” and “The White Girl,” both are brief snippets, but reach deep into your chest. Urrea elicits such empathy for his characters, addressing race relations in the American west with a variety of literally styles and realistic scenarios. Literal and figurative borders. Solid collection! #bookclub

Suet624 Oh boy, I really liked this book. I still think of the young boys experiencing rain. 4y
britt_brooke @Suet624 Such a great collection! I love when stories stick with us so vibrantly. 💚 4y

britt_brooke @BarbaraBB Thank you! 4y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen The weekly discussions were challenging because I felt like I had to cover each story, but ultimately, it was a success! 4y
Cinfhen Do u guys actually meet face to face every week??? That‘s pretty impressive 🙌🏻 4y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen No, we are spread out between Kentucky and Tennessee (though one friend is local to me), so we have a private fb group. I‘m hoping we can get together this summer. I‘d love to see them! 🤞🏼 4y

This was such a great Dollar Tree find! Stories two and three that connected and featured boys from the San Diego barrio were excellent. I also enjoyed his dip into a dystopian story about an American drought. The two magical realism stories weren‘t my favorite, but overall this was a wonderful collection!

I think your book club will enjoy this @britt_brooke ! Thanks for pulling it off my #mountTBR. 💜

britt_brooke Dang! You flew through it. 🤩 I have a hard time not doing the same, but have to pace myself for book club. It‘s a struggle. 😅 I‘ve read, and loved, the first two stories so far. We‘re doing 3-4 stories each week. 4y
Megabooks @britt_brooke just a fantastic book! I was stress reading this afternoon. I hope you have a great discussion about it!! 4y
britt_brooke @Megabooks Thanks! 💚 It‘s our first short story collection. And short fiction is new territory for some of my ladies, so it should be interesting. 4y

Speaking of short stories, @Megabooks @Cinfhen , have you all read this? It‘s the May pick for my IRL #bookclub. One of my friends chose this. She loves Urrea, but I still hadn‘t read him until now. I‘m one story in and absolutely in love! Hope that continues. 🤞🏻

AlaMich Is this new? I love Alberto Urrea! 4y
britt_brooke @AlaMich It was published in 2015, but I had never heard of it until a couple of weeks ago. Must‘ve slipped under the radar? What‘s your favorite of his? I have House of Broken Angels and plan to read it soon. 4y
JamieArc I have a small crush on Urrea. He is a wonderful writer (of both fiction and non-fiction), and a wonderful human being as well. I wasn‘t aware of this book either - thanks for putting it on our radar! 4y

Megabooks It‘s on my shelf but I haven‘t read it yet! Definitely tag me in your review. 👍🏻 4y
Megabooks Thanks!! 4y
BarbaraBB I didn‘t know about this one but LOVED two of his other books. 4y
Cinfhen Ohhh, I‘m impressed with your bookclub girls!! I‘ll look for it, too!! Is it traditional short stories or more like interconnected stories??? {{please say interconnected 🙏🏼🙏🏼}} 4y
britt_brooke @BarbaraBB Which ones have you read? 4y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen I‘m not 100% sure yet. I stopped after the first story, but I think they‘re traditional. 4y

I don‘t generally like short stories but it was the only Urrea available through Libby. What a find. Each character so quickly becomes known to you, the terrain they live in feels close, and the situations they find themselves in are complicated. The title story - teenagers who have lived in a drought all of their lives visit a water museum and are overwhelmed by what they see and hear as rain falls - had me imagining their world for days.

JamieArc I saw him speak last night and he is charming, funny, and a great storyteller in person as well. Not to be missed if you ever get the chance to see him. 😊 7y
Suet624 @JamieArc How great! I loved listening to him read his stories. You can tell he has quite the sense of humor. I chuckled quite a bit. 7y

That was the best short story collection I have read in a long time! As always with short stories a few fell flat for me, but two of them made me cry and the title story was just scary. Also, this was my last book for #LitsyAtoZ #LetterU #challengecomplete! @BookishMarginalia although I am still working on a second time through using titles.

EllieDottie Congratulations on completing the challenge!! 🎉✨🎂 7y

This was a well done book of short stories. It definitely has been a great crafting companion plus made my 4hr drive bearable last night. The first short story was my favorite. All of them were engaging though. I thought the author did a solid job of narration for the audiobook as well

Came home from work with a massive headache. So instead of reading I started a new audiobook and a new beanie. I'm very early into both so I'm withholding judgment. The audiobook is short stories and well the beanie should be a cute little ribbed one. We shall see!

mabell @Marchpane oh good! I wondered about that. Bryson has a tendency to *slightly* exaggerate, but I find his books truly hilarious 😄 8y

I loved this collection of stories! Urrea has an ability I make you feel the settings - the heat and dust of the wide open American West roll over you as you're reading. The title story in particular is fantastic. 👌 I definitely recommend it for short story fans!

Short stories set in the American southwest and Mexico, these are mostly about real people living quiet lives on the edge of nowhere. They are extraordinary only in their ordinariness. The title story is a chilling, frighteningly possible future.
