Long Division
Long Division | Kiese Laymon
Long Division includes two distinct but tightly interwoven stories--one called "All Things Considered," the other "Long Division." In the first, it's March 2012: 14-year-old Citoyen "City" Coldson and his nemesis, LaVander Peeler, become the first black male duo to win the state of Mississippi's Can You Use This Word in a Sentence contest finals. Both boys are asked to represent Mississippi at the televised national competition. (Hours before the contest begins, City is given a book without an author called "Long Division.") Turmoil and misunderstanding ensue, as City and LaVander learn they have reason to doubt the merit of their presence at the contest. They want us to win, City says to LaVander moments before the contest starts. After being assigned, and then misusing, the word niggardly in the first round of the contest, City has a remarkable on-stage meltdown in front of a national television audience. LaVander, on the other hand, though incredibly shaken, advances to the finals and has the chance to win the contest. The day after the contest, City is sent to spend the weekend with his grandmother in the small coastal community of Melahatchie, which is also the site of the mysterious disappearance of girl named Baize Shephard. Baize Shephard also happens to be one of the main characters in the book "Long Division," which City has been dipping into throughout the story. While in Melahatchie, City's troubled Uncle Relle reveals that City has become an overnight YouTube celebrity thanks to his on-stage meltdown, and that he is being sought to appear on a new television show called "Youtubes Black Reality All Stars." City is alternately celebrated and ridiculed by the white and black residents of Melahatchie as a result of his performance at the contest, even as he delves deeper into "Long Division" and its story of the missing Baize Shephard. When the neighborhood is convinced that a white man nicknamed Pot-Belly has assaulted Baize and done away with her body, they beat the man to death...or so City thinks, until he finds the man alive, chained up in a workshed in the back yard of his grandmothers house. City visits the imprisoned white man four times during the course of his weekend--reading to him from

There is a lot going on here, Long Division is a unique book, and I enjoyed the uniqueness. However, I listened to the audio and I wouldn‘t recommend it. While it was narrated very well, I feel like there were times I got lost and there was no delineation when the time changed and I know I missed things. Would definitely recommend this in print form over audio.

I really liked the themes of this book—racism, black life, family, life choices. But the execution didn‘t fully work for me. It‘s split into two parts. I really liked the first part and wanted to like the second part, but I felt like it went off the rails a bit. There‘s a lot to like here, so I‘ll give it a low pick.

Librarybelle I like the cover! 10mo
TheAromaofBooks Great progress!!! 10mo

ChaoticMissAdventures His biography is really exceptional, he tackles a few different topics, and his writing is so good. Highly recommend 10mo
Ruthiella It went off the rails for me too. I think he reissued a revised version of it, did you read that one? 10mo
Hooked_on_books @Librarybelle What‘s cool is that the cover in on the back, too. The first part starts as books usually do, then you flip the book over and start the second part from the second cover. Unique packaging. 10mo
Hooked_on_books @ChaoticMissAdventures I completely agree! That book is just marvelous. It‘s what prompted me to pick up this one, in fact. 10mo
Hooked_on_books @Ruthiella I think so. This definitely doesn‘t have the original cover and I picked it up maybe 2 years ago as a new book. I have no idea what revisions were made to the text. I just feel like the time travel came across as silly, like he didn‘t quite commit to it. Though the messaging was really good. 10mo
Librarybelle That is cool about the cover! 10mo

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This book has many different elements packed into one little novel. It has time travel and racism, humor and coming-of-age. There are hysterical images I can't get out of my head. The main character is so endearing and the others are unique and memorable. It is unlike anything else I've read.

I wasn‘t planning on getting any books today, but after being verbally abused in the parking lot (some man yelled, “Fuck you, bitch” at me for the heinous crime of…getting out of my car 🤷🏼‍♀️), when I saw this one, I decided it would help me feel better! And fellow Littens, it did.

MrsMalaprop People 😡🤷‍♀️. Glad you treated yourself. 😊 3y

I recently finished reading Long Division & WOW. Where to even begin. It really did have a bit of everything. Humor, love, time travel...what more could you need 😛 I'm still trying to wrap my head around the ending. But in the meantime I had to do my nails so figured why not paint them to match? I'm quite pleased with how closely I was able to match the colors! 🌈 I posted this on my nail IG & the author commented & shared it, I'm so flattered 🤩

This book was just too dark for me, although it added to my theory that time travel automatically makes a book creepy. Maybe I just wasn‘t in the right headspace because I could tell that it was a good story and the novel-within-a-novel worked really well, but it just left me with a heavy feeling in my gut.

Next winner in my #LitsyAtoZ drawing is this gem from my TBR stack of print books. Some are ebooks; most are print books. So it's a good thing I finally finished the print book I started in early January. I have to do more of that if I want to get through my 26 books this year.

Distractions abound, though, don't they? #BlameItOnLitsy

Read for @bookriot #ReadHarder Challenge to read a book about books. I don‘t know if I like this book or not. I really enjoyed parts, even cried at one, but at times I was confused to where I had to reread pages. Great story & characters, beautiful writing, there was a lot to think about. Feels like one of those classic southern writer books were the fun of the book is when you pick it apart. 3.5 stars, probably will bump it up after rereading.

Well this was SUUUPER WEIRD in the most amazing way. I️ love the voices of all the characters, the time travel tripped me out, and I️ laughed through the whole thing. Some elements were a little confusing, but I️ think reading a hard copy of the book would have cleared things up. That said, the narrator was great! 4/5 stars

Everyone seems to love this book but it was just okay for me. I loved the concept (time travel incorporating themes of prejudice, race relations) and I enjoyed the writing style which was smart and funny but half the time I was so confused with the plot that I had a hard time connecting with the important pieces. I liked it, I just didn't love it.

I don't think enough people know about this book. Time travel meets racism meets coming of age story. This novel moves back and forth in Mississippi between 1985, 1964, and 2013. Laymon does an exceptional job capturing small moments that tell big truths. I will be looking forward to more from this author.

I love the genre and character intersectionality of this book, but it hit this crescendo and fizzled in the last 20 pages. What happened at the end? Who is who and who is time traveling with who? Still loved this and would recommend to others!

I've started teaching my class, so reading has slowed a bit, but this book is pretty special. A book within a book about race, justice, and online fame. It is difficult to explain and sometimes a bit difficult to follow as you are placed in the book without warning, but it was an incredible read and well worth your time.

This starts out really strong for the first two-thirds. Then, like out of nowhere, it gets too dull. It's as if the book needs to end but there are a hundred things to wrap up first. "So-so" rating because the beginning and middle are fantastic.
