Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology
Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology | Leah Remini, Rebecca Paley
#1 "NEW YORK TIMES" BESTSELLER The outspoken actress, talk show host, and reality television star offers up a no-holds-barred memoir, including an eye-opening insider account of her tumultuous and heart-wrenching thirty-year-plus association with the Church of Scientology. Leah Remini has never been the type to hold her tongue. That willingness to speak her mind, stand her ground, and rattle the occasional cage has enabled this tough-talking girl from Brooklyn to forge an enduring and successful career in Hollywood. But being a troublemaker has come at a cost. That was never more evident than in 2013, when Remini loudly and publicly broke with the Church of Scientology. Now, in this frank, funny, poignant memoir, the former "King of Queens" star opens up about that experience for the first time, revealing the in-depth details of her painful split with the church and its controversial practices. Indoctrinated into the church as a child while living with her mother and sister in New York, Remini eventually moved to Los Angeles, where her dreams of becoming an actress and advancing Scientology s causes grew increasingly intertwined. As an adult, she found the success she d worked so hard for, and with it a prominent place in the hierarchy of celebrity Scientologists alongside people such as Tom Cruise, Scientology s most high-profile adherent. Remini spent time directly with Cruise and was included among the guests at his 2006 wedding to Katie Holmes. But when she began to raise questions about some of the church s actions, she found herself a target. In the end, she was declared by the church to be a threat to their organization and therefore a Suppressive Person, and as a result, all of her fellow parishioners including members of her own family were told to disconnect from her. Forever. Bold, brash, and bravely confessional, "Troublemaker" chronicles Leah Remini s remarkable journey toward emotional and spiritual freedom, both for herself and for her family. This is a memoir designed to reveal the hard-won truths of a life lived honestly from an author unafraid of the consequences. Praise for "Troublemaker" "" An aggressively honest memoir . . . "Troublemaker" is the most raw and revealing Scientology memoir to date. "Entertainment Weekly" "" Leah s story is a juicy, inside-Hollywood read, but it s more than that. It s a moving story about the value of questioning authority and how one woman survived a profound crisis of faith. "People" "" Remini [offers] up some juicy tidbits from her decades in the church. This has been in my audio library since 2017! Glad I finally listened to Leah‘s unbelievable journey into and out of Scientology. She definitely did not hold back, but she was not disparaging or disrespectful. She unapologetically shares her experience and struggles with Scientology. Really a fascinating story 🎧

Well I'm new here and figured I'd share my current read. My favorite thing about this book is how Leah incorporates humor into her storytelling so that it's just not back to back horrible Scientology things. I'm only a few chapters in but I've spent about 90% of the time just laughing and saving quotes that keep me entertained.

Not suitable for work as there are a ton of f-bombs. Leah is unapologetically loud and sarcastic and it took me a bit to get used to. Once I did, I enjoyed her story more. She brought up one of the main questions I have regarding Scientology: Where is Shelly Miscavige?

Leah‘s career brought her in contact with other celebrity Scientologists and so the two topics are entwined. I did find some of her stories of her acting and tv life interesting. It was frustrating, angering, and sad for Leah as she learned of more and more transgressions of higher authorities in the church. Cont in comments...

LibraryCin She never did find out where the wife of the leader disappeared to after years of hearing nothing from a woman Leah had considered a friend (and it appears that is still unknown). 2y

Leah Remini is open, honest, sarcastic, and entertaining. Listening to her memoir is like sitting around a kitchen table chatting with a friend. I heard rumors about some of the evils of Scientology over 20 years ago, and after watching Leah‘s TV program about Scientology, the chapters focused on the cult were not surprising. The book was still informative and I appreciate her candor about her experiences both as an actress and with Scientology.

TheLudicReader I recently rewatched Going Clear (doc about Scientology). Fascinating and creepy. 2y
DGRachel @TheLudicReader 20-ish years ago, the company I worked for was awarded the construction contract for a new building in Clearwater FL and it was going to be my 1st solo job as a project accountant. I came away from this book with the impression that I would like Leah Remini. "Belief and faith are great, but very few people have been led astray by thinking for themselves." I have to admire a person who came to that conclusion after having been indoctrinated into a religious cult as a child and for thirty years thereafter. People have no idea the kind of fortitude it takes to leave, let alone speak out publicly. She deserves credit.

MicrobeMom Her show exposing Scientology is also great. 3y

I have never seen any of the shows she has done with regard to Scientology, so I went into this knowing very little about it. Wow is it problematic. It does make me want to know more in the watching a train wreck sort of way. I'm glad she was able to leave, but sad for the friends she lost because of it's principles.

Overall Rating 4¼⭐ | Narration 😍 = Amazing

I think Scientology is so weird, and listening to this just strengthened that belief. Such an interesting story...really makes one look at Tom Cruise in a whole new way. It felt like she never really delved into the sex scandals surrounding Scientology...I wonder if that‘s because she never dealt with anything of that nature or if she just didn‘t want to go there?

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I'm so obsessed with her show. 3y

I'm glad I've finally taken the time to dive into this book as it's been of interest to me since its initial publication. I never understood how someone could get mixed up in this church, but Remini does a great job of breaking down the taught beliefs of the religion and what might feel appealing. It was fascinating to read of her experiences from childhood to when she left a few years ago, and I respect her so much for getting out and sharing.

KendallHershey I‘ve been diving in to this topic hard lately with her TV series released on Netflix and the podcast she‘s doing now called Fair Game. So fascinating and utterly inexplicable how they are considered an official religion. If the book is good too, I might as well stack it ☺️ 4y
Kaylamburson Def stack it! I'm curious how different it is from the show and the podcast or if it's all similar information. I didn't realize the show was more than just a quick documentary. I'm thinking of diving into it! @KendallHershey 4y
KendallHershey @Kaylamburson so far the show and the podcast cover similar topics, but they can be much more real about stuff on the podcast. I think they speak more plainly because they‘re not subject to TV broadcasting regulations. 4y
Kaylamburson Ohh that totally makes sense. I'm wondering if I should start with the podcast then. @KendallHershey 4y

Leah Remini holds nothing back in this biography. Her upbringing in a Scientology family, to her time in the Sea Org, and her celebrity status in the Church of Scientology. She uncovers the corruption and sketchiness that is the church and all the people she saw hurt and destroyed along the way. Her experiences that would eventually lead her to leaving the church and beginning a quest to destroy it!

Audiobook. Read by the author. Was expecting more of an expose about Scientology, and her life as a Scientologist. Finished the book with more questions, unlike other religions I'm been curious about, too afraid to do an internet search. The Tom Cruise stuff was fascinating. Might have taken the long way in a few errands to finish that story. Also, I figured the stuff would have been true, otherwise, I imagine Tom would have prevented publishing
