Ready for this gem (I just saw that it‘s autographed!). I‘m betting there are lots of word search finds in here too - yay!! 😃 If the title seems familiar, its probably because you‘ve seen that quote in my dating profile.

If like me you love anything serial killery then this book is for you. John Wayne has been obsessed with serial killers from a young age...he even likes to tell people he was named after John Wayne Gacy (which he wasn't). Now there is a serial killer in John Waynes town and he is determined to use all the serial killer knowledge he has gained to hunt them down, all whilst keeping his own desires to become a serial killer under control.ââââ

Uh...what did I just read?
I was hooked in the first 100 pages and I was under the impression that this was a YA thriller. The main character reminded me so much of Dexter; he had rules and was fighting the urge to kill. But then when the truth is revealed about a serial killer in town, everything changed. The book changed genre. Uh...

Interesting read. Was not prepared for the supernatural angle. I don‘t normally read reviews before books, and the back cover didn‘t share.

I really enjoyed this novel. The main character John is a sociopath he is also 15 & relates to serial killers so much that he thinks he may become one. Then someone is murdered in his town and he decides to go after the killer.

John Cleaver is obsessed by serial killers. When one starts stalking his small town, he is the best-qualified to track him down, though that forces him to confront his fears that he might become one himself. This is a YA horror novel, with a 15yo protagonist, but is still intense and gory. I loved the psychological thriller aspect, even though I normally don't care for horror novels. First of all, I don‘t recommend listening to the audiobook, as the narrator is terrible. However, I was able to make my way through the book and, for the most part, enjoyed it. I had expected this to be a bit of a “Dexter Junior,†and it did start out that way. But 1/3 to 1/2 way through the book, it became a horror novel. The difference was jarring. I wish it had been one way or the other. 3 1/2 out of five stars.

The first half of this book is a thriller/psychological mystery and the second half is horror. Despite the mixed-up genres, it's very well written, which is why I gave it a pick even though it's not necessarily my cup of tea. I found myself wanting to root for the teenage protagonist. I can't really write more without giving things away for my fellow #whodunitthesequel readers.

On its way to you, @Schlinkles!

Last one for tonight - I think Equilibrium offered an interesting Dax wrinkle. They didn't go back to it often (which was likely for the best), but Field of Fire is a good capper. The Joran thing feels a little Hannibal Lecter-ish to me, and at 3 years after the Silence of the Lambs movie it just might be!
Main character of the tagged book does a smidge better than Joran.

I won‘t say much here about this one as it‘s a #whodunitthesequel pick. I don‘t want to give too much away. I had misgivings going in (based on the title) as I normally steer away from true crime/horror. This was more fantasy/horror. Yes, it was frightening and gory, but the 15 yo MC kept me mesmerized and anxious to see how it all turned out, and the ending was a bit of a surprise to me. I was riveted, saddened and appalled by this one. 4/5âï¸ 🔽

robinb Just realized this book is the first in a six-book series. Will I read more? Maybe, but not right now. I‘m afraid John Wayne Cleaver will keep breaking my heart. 💔 @Librarybelle @ScientistSam (edited) 6y

This started out really well, and I was intrigued until about halfway through, when it took a turn for the supernatural. It became much less compelling to me but I still wanted to see how it ended. Not bad, not great. 3âï¸

This will be going to you @Pamwurtzler next week for #whodunitthesequel

P.S. I‘m so sorry @Jess_Read_This that you had to replace the notebook twice! Last time was my fault, I thought I had sent my new address. I‘m so sorry!😥

Clare-Dragonfly I‘m curious. Somewhere in the first couple pages of this book is a line something like “that was before I knew it was a demon.†Did you notice that line? I know the author put it in as a hint to what was coming so people wouldn‘t be turned off by the sudden turn to the supernatural, but it obviously doesn‘t work for everybody. 6y
Clare-Dragonfly I hope my question doesn‘t come across as criticism—I‘m really just interested in your reaction! 😅 6y
JenlovesJT47 @Clare-Dragonfly no worries! 😅 yeah I hear what you‘re saying, but I guess I wasn‘t expecting it to that degree. It was still interesting but imo considering John‘s background and issues, I think it would have had more impact if it had just been a “normal†serial killer if that makes sense lol 6y
See All 8 Comments
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Yup it lost me too with the supernatural element. 6y
Pamwurtzler Thanks I‘ll be on the lookout! 6y
robinb This may sound weird, but I was sort of wondering until someone else saw it if the “demon†was all in his mind. That perhaps the “demon†was a person that he saw as a demon. Or I even wondered if HE (John) might be the demon. 🤪🤨😩😱🤔🤷ðŸ»â€â™€ï¸ðŸ¤·ðŸ»â€â™€ï¸ðŸ¤¦ðŸ»â€â™€ï¸ðŸ¤¦ðŸ»â€â™€ï¸ 6y
JenlovesJT47 @robinb the thought crossed my mind!! I thought it would have been much better without the supernatural element. 🤷ðŸ»â€â™€ï¸ 6y
robinb @JenlovesJT47 Yes, that element was really hard to get into. And not much background info on the where and why of the beast either. 6y

I really enjoyed the first half of it. The MC is good, intriguing and I think the author did a lot of researches on him, and that's a really good thing. But the second half didn't catch my attention, I wasn't invested in the story, so much so that I won't keep up with this series, even if it was quite a good reading, fast paced and interesting (at least for half of it!)

I got this book as part of the #whodunnitthesequel book exchange. I had never heard of it, and went into it expecting a YA Dexter-style serial killer thriller. It took a hard left turn about 100 pages in, and while it wasn‘t bad after that it also wasn‘t what I was expecting, so....yeah. That‘s why it was a so-so. I‘m counting this for my #blameitonlitsy pick for #booked2018, which finished off this season!!

OMG! What a wild ride. I feel like Wells did some serious research and really worked to create a MC that you feel for, even when there‘s good reason not to. And there is a supernatural bent to this story that helps keep it a little less real, especially if you‘re reading at night. I‘m definitely continuing the series. #GenCon2018

Note: The last line made me think of Ted Bundy and how normal he seemed to a lot of people.

It looks like Litsy might be mixed on this book but if it‘s not good I‘m gonna be upset. This is wild. The MC has all the predictors of being a serial killer but he has rules to make sure he doesn‘t become one.

Note: I‘m a secret #murderino. I‘ve watched a lot of FBI Files type shows and when I was 15ish I wanted to grow up to study serial killers. Now that I‘ve said this, I guess I‘m not a secret #murderino to Littens anymore.
