Mehso-so

I should have loved this book, and I had high hopes based on my previous experience with Cinemaps by the same artist/author. This one was disappointing because the books featured in the illustrations were overwhelmingly obscure. Even with an English degree, I found myself skipping about half of the books, since there were so many I hadn‘t even heard of and had no context for. Highlights were the “maps” of Pride & Prejudice and A Wrinkle in Time.

A detailed, colorful atlas for booknerds who also miss Family Circus. 19 classic works are covered here in varying illustration styles. Reading this will make you glad to revisit the stories you know and want to read the ones you haven‘t yet.

This is the coolest book-about-books I have seen in a long time. The authors mapped 19 books/poems/plays, everything from Waiting for Godot to Huck Finn. My fave is A Christmas Carol; there are intricate drawings of London, plotting where Scrooge went with the ghosts. Love this!! #booksaboutbooks

LeahBergen Wow! 😍 7y
LitLogophile Wow, need this! 7y
AlaMich There is also an earlier one they did for movies called Cinemaps. I saw it in the NPR Book Concierge. Good gift for a movie buff 7y

Ms_T Incredible! 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk I own this and Cinemaps and they both rule so hard! 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk By the way, trailers for Altered Carbon on Netflix are starting to show up online. Thoughts? 7y
AlaMich @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I am super curious but I also have an ongoing dilemma about seeing video versions of beloved books. I still haven‘t seen even one episode of GoT. I‘ve been thinking about rereading Altered Carbon, even though I almost never reread books. How about you? Yea or nay on the series? 7y
AlaMich @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I‘m hoping to find Cinemaps at the library soon 😊 7y

Litsy, I know I haven‘t been around much lately (I‘ve missed you all sooo much!), & I‘m sorry, but I could use some bookish Christmas help!

One of my close friends is a children‘s librarian & we always exchange books for Christmas. Since she reads so much kid & YA for work, I get her “adult” books. I‘m out of ideas this year! I‘m getting her the tagged book, but am drawing a blank otherwise.

She likes Elena Ferrante, the Sandman series by👇🏽

LauraBrook ...Gaiman, Joshua Ferris, Oscar Wilde, gothics, Sedaris, George Sand, Woolf, true crime. Usually she gets an illustrated book of some kind & 2 regular ones, & I like to pick from books that I‘ve read in the last year & think she‘d like. But this year it‘s been mostly cozies and random stuff for me, nothing seems to fit. Also, I don‘t read newer books (doesn‘t stop me from buying them), so I‘m really stuck. Would Radium Girls work? Susan Hill? SOS! 7y
Tamra If she likes Gaiman, maybe the Riddell illustrated 7y

johnnie_cakes If she likes Gaiman‘s fiction check out 7y
LauraBrook @Tamra @johnnie_cakes Thank you both so much - I‘m off to investigate! 7y
2BR02B I think she'd really like Among Others. It's basically a love letter to classic sci fi and libraries, and the magical realism angle reminded me of Gaiman's writing. 7y
2BR02B Also, if she's into true crime, by far my favorite book in the genre this year has been 7y
LauraBrook @2BR02B Thank you so much - both are on my TBR and I thought about them but was hesitant. Going onto my list of possibles! 7y
batsy If she likes Woolf, this gem of a novel might be something she might enjoy 7y
[DELETED] 3803335244 Oh I‘m terrible with adult books this time of year! Sorry but Hope you find some 7y
LauraBrook @ForeverNerdy I‘m the same way, my usual bookish brain just kind of gets fuzzy. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Glad I‘m in good company! 7y

I'm very late to the #FiveStarPredictions party since I barely looked at my phone in the last week, but thanks to @tpixie for tagging me! It was so hard to narrow down, but these are the books I find myself anticipating the most.

I'm going to get creative here (since I like using the maps from this book): In Around the World in 80 Days it takes #oneweek to get from London to Suez, Egypt, and #oneweek to get from San Francisco to New York. #90sinJuly

Studying this map of the Pequod while listening to Moby-Dick.

Chelsey Cool ship, not such a great novel. I know that's not a popular view but I hated every page. 8y
shawnmooney There you are, my much-missed Litsy friend! 😘 I am pretty much with @Chelsey on Moby Dick - don't plan to ever read it, but hope you have a whale of a good time with it! Heh heh... 8y
DGRachel @Chelsey I hated it, too! ☺️🐳 8y

OrangeMooseReads Moby Dick was a forced read in a couple of ways. I had to read it for a class and write my final paper for that class on the book and present it with a couple of other people. Also I forced myself to finish it even after the class, paper, and presentation were over; it was one of those "I've gotten this far so sanity be damned I'm going to finish it" moments. 8y
SusanInTiburon Hi @shawnmooney! Nice to see you! 8y
SusanInTiburon @Chelsey @DGRachel I get it. This is not my first attempt on the white whale. Last time I quit as soon as the narrative paused and the fancy stuff took over. This time I'm enjoying the whole ride. 8y
SusanInTiburon @OrangeMooseReads I doubt I could stand to read Moby Dick if I were forced into it. 8y
OrangeMooseReads @SusanInTiburon yeah it's one that nobody should be forced to read 8y

Eyelit @Kalalalatja indeed I am! Not sure I'll be able to do the full weekend as I have Sunday late afternoon commitments - but I'm all in up to that time. 😃 8y
Eyelit @Zelma 😊 thanks! (I'm so grateful that my library carries so many series... or I'd be much poorer and this shelfie much bigger 😂) 8y
Kalalalatja Awesome! I am doing it too, but I don't think I will be able to stay awake the whole 24 hours 😄 8y

angrylilasian I'm now convinced my graphic novels needs their own bookshelf! 😍 8y
LukkiAnn What the name of the series on the top left corner and the bottom right corner??? 8y
Eyelit @LukkiAnn for the top left are you talking about the black covers after the red and blue stripe covers? If so, it's Alias and Pulse (the Jessica Jones comics) the bottom shelf is all the whedonverse comics starting with Buffy and ending with Dollhouse (with angel, firefly, and fray in between) 8y
Eyelit @Kalalalatja me neither - but an effort will be made 😄 8y

Fair warning, Littens: Once you know about this book you are going to want to hold it in your hands. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Plotted: A Literary Atlas is a book of maps of books.

Pictured - Robinson Crusoe's island, the homes of Pride & Prejudice stratified by social standing and connected by relationship, Scrooge's time travels through London. #maps #LyricalApril

I was walking by a shelf today and spotted this!
It's a literary atlas, and includes "A Wrinkle in Time" (pictured). Most of the literary maps are based on grown-up books, new and old, fiction and nonfiction.
