"Where does one live when one fits nowhere but in fiction and insanity? Even today
that's what we call our in-betweens: insane.
We give them lithium and bus passes and hope they melt into the crowd."
From "Postulation on the Violent Works of the Marquis de Sade" by Elizabeth Bachinsky
Three more books from my recent book haul! The book on geraniums is so pretty I couldn't resist 😍

Yesterday I was in need of some retail therapy. Nothing like getting lost amongst piles of books to bring comfort. The tagged book is a local cookbook I'm particularly excited to explore!

Terra is curled up on the bed with me while I start this book of poetry. I'm only three poems in and I already love it.

My local indie is now open for walk up window book shopping. It was nice to see the shop again, even if it was from outside. I also got my first vaccine today!

I'm spending time with my plants under the growlights and pretending that the windchill isn't -20° out! The tagged book is one I've been looking for at thrift shops. It's supposed to be good.

Goodreads has been getting on my nerves lately so I just finished setting up my #storygraph account. I'm sydneyerin on there if anyone wants to connect. It seems pretty nice so far!
"We must all get away from the false commercial standards of "beauty" imposed on us by movie moguls and advertising firms, because the youth/beauty hang-up sets us against one another in a frenzied competition for attention, and leads in the end to an obsession with self which is death to real affection or real sensual love."

"...this was the simple happiness of complete harmony with her surroundings, the happiness that asks for nothing, that just accepts, just breathes, just is."
So I almost never read thrillers. The only one I remember reading that I really loved was My Sister, the Serial Killer. I decided to give this one a try because of the gentrification premise. I think all the information on gentrification was very interesting and a great part of the book. The thriller aspect was what lost me. The action, gore, and violence just wasn't for me. I think I'll check out her romances instead.
I just read this short piece by Michelle Zauner who has a book coming out next year with the same name. I'm adding it to the tbr!

"Why couldn't two unhappy people refresh each other on their way through this dusty business of life by a little talk,—real, natural talk, about what they felt, what they would have liked, what they still tried to hope?"
I really enjoyed this queer western! I don't think I've ever read a western before but if there were more like this I would start. I loved the characters, they were badass and compelling. Thanks for the recommendation @sebrittainclark

I'm happy with my number of books but I will say about half were cozy mysteries. This year I needed as much cozy comfort as I could get.

I've started the tagged book on audio and I'm enjoying it so far! Terra is keeping me company. She loves curling up in the pillows.

I finally finished this after reading of and on through the year. It's hard to review because of the wide range of writings. I found some great authors through this but there were also many pieces that were mediocre at best.

The Rules of Magic Blankets by E.H. Brogan
Art by John Kenn
"Each character poses for the camera and therefore the viewer. There's an awareness that she will be looked at, that she is styled as the object of male desire. However, Sherman challenges our expectations by morphing from character to character, revealing the artifice of on-screen femininity. Not one 'version' is real; they are all constructs"

I'm so excited to have my #NewYearWhoDis list from @sebrittainclark
My library has several of these so I should be all set for January. I'm thinking I'll start with Upright Women Wanted, it sounds like my kinda book!
Thank you @monalyisha
My favorite bookstore just came out with these new sweatshirts. It's super cozy!

1. Tagged!
2. I love short story collections but one of my favorites is North Station by Bae Suah
3. I like either but I especially enjoy when they're very subtly connected.

I really enjoyed this one! I thought it was better than the first in the series even though that one was good too. I found Lucie and Tristan to be more compelling characters and I loved the publishing house plot line.
My pre-orders just got delivered! I've been looking forward to these
I got my zines from neither-nor out of KC! The KC zine fest was last weekend (it was virtual this year) and there were so many beautiful temptations.

I loved this graphic novel. The art is gorgeous and the story was odd and evocative.

I knew I needed this book when I saw the review from Kaveh Akbar and it did not disappoint. It reads like a car barreling downhill with no breaks in the best possible way. I can't wait to read more of his work.

I devoured this book! It was so immersive, which has been rare for me with my short attention span lately. The story was suspenseful, creepy, and at times grotesque, but the imagery was beautiful and there was a deeper meaning/metaphor that made it all the better.
Getting close to finishing the spring issue of The Paris Review. I ventured outside in my mask to get a boba tea (Blueberry Aloe Vera Chia Seed - so good!). This pandemic has made my social anxiety even worse. It's so rare that I interact with strangers now, I'm out of practice.
