Bluebird, Bluebird | Attica Locke

I mostly liked this, but some of the flashbacks to previous happenings didn‘t completely hold my interest. I liked Darren, but didn‘t like some of the other characters much. I feel like dark and gritty are good words to describe this one. I do plan to continue with book 2 at some point

I‘m posting one book a day from my massive collection. No description, no reason for why I want to read it (some I‘ve had so long I don‘t even remember why!). Feel free to join in!

1. Definitely a podcast.
2. I checked out the tagged book in June and need to finish it in the next two weeks before it‘s due back at the library.

Not only is Attica Locke a very good writer, she‘s a master crafter of stories. This is her debut, and there are some rough bits, but it‘s nonetheless an excellent, complex, well-crafted story. Great social commentary on both capitalism and race.

squirrelbrain I love that Bindi always wants to be in your photos! 1mo

jlhammar She is good. I haven‘t read this one yet, but definitely want to. I‘m excited for the new Highway 59 novel 1mo
Hooked_on_books @squirrelbrain She‘s very bonded to me and wants to be with me at all times, so it‘s kinda hard not to have her in my pics. 😂 I love that she always wants to be with me (the feeling is mutual), but it does make me feel a little bad when I have to work. 1mo
Hooked_on_books @jlhammar I‘m excited for that one, too! I really liked the first 2 in the series. 1mo

Sequel to Lonesome Dove…fantastic. It comes in under Lonesome Dove, but I would say this is a must read if you loved LD. As soon as I can get to the library, I‘m getting the first prequel, Dead Man‘s Walk. #Texas #Mexico #BigBookSummerChallenge. McMurtry does women well and they are given the credit they deserve. Love his characters, love his story telling. This book was hugged, just not quite as much, but it‘s worthy.

Forget the Alamo: The True Story of the Myth That Made Texas | Bryan Burrough, Chris Tomlinson, Jason Stanford

I went into this knowing very little about the Alamo, except that we are supposed to remember it. It was well researched and told the history of Texas leading up to the battle and the aftermath, up to present day (Phil Collins?? Really?)

It was disheartening to see how the myth of the Alamo has been used to oppress people of Mexican descent since the battle in 1836.
