Ruthiella That‘s got to be one of the least romantic marriage proposals ever…😳 1mo

BarkingMadRead @Ruthiella so pathetic, and I hate that she just gives in to everything. Yeah, he‘s had a fancy wedding, but she hasn‘t! (edited) 1mo
TheAromaofBooks One of the things that always gets me with this book is how much of what we are reading does NOT happen - we are constantly getting scenes from the narrator's imagination, things she can see happening but aren't actually reality. The entire section of seeing herself saying goodbye to Max, seeing herself going to New York, seeing herself being introduced to boys there - it's like we read the real story but also the parallel possibilities. 1mo
BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks so true! It‘s like the only time she has a personality is in her own head 1mo
ElizaMarie I mean… there was NO time to say he loved her! He had marmalade for breakfast!!!! (Ha) #OhJan #MarmaladeTakesTime (edited) 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly I wonder if we‘re going to get a Han and Leia moment 😂 1mo
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly that would be epic 🤣🤣 #iloveyou #iknow 1mo
IndoorDame @BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks yes!!! And she‘s fascinating as the unreliable narrator because the writing is so intoxicating and I always get swept away in her fantasies even though I know it‘s a sham 1mo
julieclair @TheAromaofBooks @BarkingMadRead @IndoorDame Yes! 💯! The writing of her mind‘s eye is so beautiful, and the reality of Max‘s dialogue is so blunt and spare. 1mo
Roary47 @Ruthiella @BarkingMadRead I thought the same thing about the marriage proposal and the fancy wedding. Lol I like that #MarmaladeTakesTime @ElizaMarie Our narrator, Jan, reminds me of Sansa now with her imaginative mind verses reality @TheAromaofBooks @IndoorDame 1mo
5feet.of.fury @Roary47 I wasn‘t even thinking that, but she does remind me of Sansa in that sense -no idea what people‘s motivations are, things are all supposed to play out like a story but don‘t. 1mo
5feet.of.fury Hoppy really annoyed me in this bit, even if Jan is naive (no dispute) she really felt the need to take her down a peg, doesn‘t matter that she‘s right, what a jerk. 1mo
ElizaMarie @5feet.of.fury YES! I mean she kinda went to the whole “what did you do?“ and I thought she was alluding to the fact that she thought she tricked him into a proposal, but then at the same time calling her young and naive and just... Ugh! 1mo
Ruthiella @Roary47 @5feet.of.fury Sansa Stark is a good parallel for clueless, romantic Jan. 👍 1mo
kwmg40 I laughed when I read the part where Maxim orders breakfast, then takes out an emery board and starts filing his nails, right before he proposes marriage. Is it normal for rich people to file their nails in fancy hotel restaurants while waiting for their food? 😂 1mo
BarkingMadRead @kwmg40 I don‘t know if it‘s normal, it‘s definitely repulsive 1mo
5feet.of.fury @ElizaMarie yeah being a nosey Nelly in everyone‘s business & being confused by the whirlwind is one thing, but to tell the poor young woman that she‘s going to bore everyone at Manderlay‘s parties was so spiteful. 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly @kwmg40 I definitely think Maxim is just a weirdo 😂 1mo
kwmg40 @Clare-Dragonfly That sums it up pretty well! 1mo
dabbe @BarkingMadRead Thank goodness he didn't use nail clippers! 😂 1mo
dabbe @IndoorDame Agree 💯. And because she is so hard on herself, she can't believe Max (oops, Maxim) might love her because she thinks she's crap. It also doesn't help to have a brooding Byronic hero as your husband! 😃 1mo
willaful @BarkingMadRead Very well put! Her imagination is vivid but also so often her own worst enemy. 1mo
