Librarybelle The dress present was creepy, and the fact that he watches her while she prays…I‘m not sure where this will lead. 5mo
Bookwormjillk Yeah a lot going on here. We‘re not all that far into the book and so much has happened already. (edited) 5mo

TheBookHippie Only chapter 15 😳🤯 whew. 5mo
Ruthiella @Librarybelle Oh yeah. Mr Bradshaw = creepy. 😱 5mo
Cuilin My prediction is the Bradshaws will be Ruth‘s doom. Mr. Bradshaw using gifts as a controlling device, gave me the ick. 5mo
AllDebooks @Librarybelle total creep. 5mo
mcctrish I agree @Cuilin Bradshaw wants a side gig 5mo
currentlyreadinginCO Sigh leave Ruth alone 5mo
dabbe I want Ruth to grow a spine! I want her to get tough like Tess! It seems like everything is happening TO her and that she's not doing anything to FOR herself. Maybe that's why there's still more ... I hope so. 5mo
AllDebooks Did anyone else think this chapter went from 0-60? Ruth was newly pregnant and dumped, and then she has a baby boy and a new lurking pervert! I'm looking at you, Bradshaw. 🤮 I hope we really start to see her character develop now she's a mother. 🤞 5mo
KAO I did like that in the last part of this chapter, Ruth finally looks back on Bellingham and becomes aware of his “selfish, worldly nature, unnoticed at the time” and recognized in his speeches “a low standard, of impatient self-indulgence, of no acknowledgment of things spiritual and heavenly.” I was hoping that a spine was born—but then came self-reproach for “judging the absent father.” Oy! 5mo
Bookwormjillk @AllDebooks yes, seemed really abrupt 5mo
rubyslippersreads I‘m glad Ruth finally recognized Bellingham for the cad he truly is. Now if she can just fend off the icky Bradshaw. 😠 5mo
julieclair I hope you‘re wrong, @Cuilin , but I‘m afraid you‘re right. 😕 5mo

Bookwormjillk That was something. But also, ladies, if your man doesn‘t like the way you look when you‘re thinking 🚩🚩🚩#longchapter #somuchtounpack 9mo

Librarybelle So true, @Bookwormjillk ! Maxim is not man of the year in my mind…he probably would not like the look on my face as I was reading that section. 9mo
BarkingMadRead @Librarybelle @Bookwormjillk I would be in so much trouble because I can never seem to shut off my face 🤣🤣🤣 9mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig It's such a Train Wreck of a Chapter. I know what's going to happen and still I yell at Jan 'WHY WOULD YOU TRUST THE EVIL MRS D"⁉️ 9mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig 'Oh don't treat me like a child' as she continually acts like one with the daydreaming and hiding around corners. And the fingers in her mouth and the nail biting makes me crazy. 9mo
Ruthiella @Bookwormjillk 🚩🚩🚩🚩💥 9mo
Ruthiella At this point, I think Jan would have been happier if she‘d married Frank Crawley aka George Glass. 9mo
Clare-Dragonfly Why did she do what Danny said?! Obviously terrible idea! Also obviously terrible: Maxim yelling at her to change and of course never telling her even the slightest clue as to why everyone is so upset. I just hope Frank or Beatrice will explain in the next chapter. 9mo
Clare-Dragonfly @Ruthiella Yes, I keep thinking Frank seems like a much better match for her. Maybe she‘ll throw over Maxim! 🤞🏻 9mo
TheAromaofBooks Everything here was absolutely crazy, but I did laugh - yesterday, Jan is like “I may need to feign illness to make sure I don't have to have Christmas with Beatrice's crazy crew“ and today it was “Maxim, did you know Beatrice plays charades at Christmas every year?“ “Yes, that's why I never go“ 😂 😂 😂 So they do have SOME common ground! 😆 9mo
Roary47 Correct me if I‘m wrong. Could she not fire Ms D? Am I correct in understanding that she wore Rebecca‘s dress? I bet she looked pretty, but man they kept telling her to dress as Alice and she just wanted to dress up and feel special. Based on her background I‘m sure this was the first time she could feel pretty in a dress, and Max just burst that bubble. What an emotional hit. 😞 9mo
BarkingMadRead @Roary47 she had the dress made to match a painting of Max‘s great grandmother I think. I‘m guessing that Rebecca once did the same 9mo
peanutnine @Clare-Dragonfly @Ruthiella she and Frank would be so much better together! They're both so shy and awkward 😅 9mo
julieclair @Roary47 Jan can totally fire Danny. Surely she will, after this? Even though Jan has no spine, she can‘t allow Danny to keep living & working there. Can she? 9mo
Clare-Dragonfly @Roary47 @julieclair I bet if it even occurs to Jan that she could fire Danny, she‘ll quail at the thought of explaining to Maxim why she wants her gone. Even though I bet he wouldn‘t even listen to any explanation she gave, he‘d just be surprised. She could do it! But she won‘t. 9mo
Clare-Dragonfly @TheAromaofBooks Yes, I thought the same! 😂 9mo
julieclair @Clare-Dragonfly Unfortunately, I believe you‘re correct. Poor Jan… she needs a friend who can give her advice and bolster her courage. 9mo
Clare-Dragonfly @julieclair She needs a therapist! 9mo
dabbe @BarkingMadRead And I believe it was the last ball they had at Manderley, so Rebecca's costume would have perhaps still been on everyone's minds--especially Maxim's. 9mo
julieclair @Clare-Dragonfly 💯😂 9mo
ElizaMarie Ugh!!! As soon as I read Mrs D being “nice” and offering suggestions, I assumed there was something wrong. So the whole rest of the chapter I had such anxiety (felt like watching an A24 film😬). I was just hoping to be wrong!!!! But Mrs D = 😈 9mo
