"I will think of the future. To remind me that the present is not forever....What is the present without the future?"

Great quote to remind us that we can change the situation we find ourselves in, we may feel stuck but we can find purpose & win a victory however small

#20BooksBy2020 Monthly check in!!
I read 9 more books this month bringing my total to 19!!
Only one to go and it‘s my IRL December bookclub ~ Purple Hibiscus
Favorite this month: Girl, Woman, Other

MelissaSue81 I‘m having trouble getting into girl, woman, other. I keep setting it aside for something else. I should stick it out though? 5y
rockpools Great going! 5y
erzascarletbookgasm So many great titles! 5y

Cathythoughts What @erzascarletbookgasm said ... great titles there 👏👏👏 5y
KarenUK Wow! Awesome job! 💕😊 5y
charl08 Love purple hibiscus. A favourite! 5y
charl08 Great graphic, too. A fun month? 5y
LinesUponAPage Nice job!! How did you like The Dutch House? 5y
Cinfhen @MelissaSue81 stick with Girl!!! In the beginning it seems disjointed but soon the stories start to connect and it‘s super satisfying ♥️🙌🏻 5y
Cinfhen I did have a fun month of reading @charl08 and I DID read some awesome books @KarenUK @Cathythoughts @erzascarletbookgasm @RachelO Dutch House was beautifully written & I was really absorbed in the story @Lifeisasnap BUT I wasn‘t a fan of the ending 😬 5y
marleed @Lifeisasnap @cinfhen I sank into the audiobook of the Dutch House narrated by Tom Hanks and now must own the physical book. I think it will be one of my Top6Reads for 2019. 5y
Cinfhen I bet Tom Hanks was a phenomenal narrator @marleed 5y
marleed @Cinfhen Yes! I‘m curious if I would have loved the story less had I absorbed it in print because Tom Hanks is so good. His ability to speak with the mind of a child is fascinating. 5y
Cinfhen Danny was such a great character @marleed but the mom 🤯🤬 5y
marleed @Cinfhen It reminds my of a good friend whose mother was seldom a part of her childhood. The mom is there in adulthood and I‘m amazed my friend is so accepting of her. My friend explained she just accepts her mother for what she is because that anger is futile. 5y
Cinfhen Your friend is much kinder and smarter than me @marleed Good for her #LifeIsTooShort 5y

Bailedbailed

Well...this isn t my kind of book. It's not badly written I was just bored and life is too short to be stuck reading a book I couldn't get into or find myself caring what happened next. I think this is a case of historical fiction mismatch.

Well, I am bailing on this. I just don't care how it will end. It's too long, too ham-handed with its attempt at gender politics, and life is too short. I enjoy SK as a rule, but maybe he should stick to writing solo. IMHO.

#stephenking #lifeistooshort #dnf

EchoLogical Yeah, I thought it took on too much but I appreciated the attempt. I hated Lila Norcross as a character. I thought she was poorly written. I didn't understand what they were trying to accomplish with her chronic discontent. I mean is that what they think women are really like? She irked me so much. 7y
AlaMich @EchoLogical I stopped this morning when Elaine had her tirade about men. So many stereotypes!! 7y
EchoLogical @AlaMich Yeah, it was definitely over the top. Lol. Still, I found it to be strangely captivating... Jeanette's part, in particular. I enjoyed reading it overall. 7y
AlaMich @EchoLogical I was doing the audio and the narrator did a fabulous job with the voices and accents...that's why I stuck with it as long as I did. 7y

Bailedbailed

Nope. I made it 150 pages in and...*spoiler alert*...NOTHING HAPPENS. Lots of people liked this book so I feel I'm missing something. But I refuse to invest another 200 pages in order to find out!

Bailedbailed

That moment when you realize that you just can't enjoy this book, might actually hate it, and life is too short for bad lit! At least my breakfast was tasty! 😋

Seriously though, the premise of this book had so much potential for being a great fluffy romance! Unfortunately, this reads like fanfic of 50 Shades, which is Twilight fanfic. I hated Twilight, and I just can't spend more of my time on similar lit. #DNF #LifeIsTooShort

Lcsmcat 💚💚 green tea frappachino! I just wish they didn't have so much sugar. 7y
the.bookish.valkyrie @Lcsmcat right?! It's my current addiction! I try to stay away, but it calls to me! Have you tried it with the raspberry sweetener? The addiction gets worse! 7y
Lcsmcat @ValkyrieAndHerBooks I don't dare! 7y
StephBengtson The green tea frappachino is the best! 7y

Wow, I kinda can't believe I'm bailing on this. I love existential crises. I love unlikable characters. I love books about the male psyche. I just really, really, REALLY can't get into Szalay's writing.

shawnmooney Ha ha: guess it wasn't worth the wait, hey? :) 8y

"Salem is in part the story of what happens when a set of unanswerable questions meets a set of unquestioned answers."
That sums it all up. Save your money and get the library book if you have to read this. ✌️️#lifeistooshort #saveyourmoney

OutlandishLit Very good to know, thanks! 8y
britt_brooke Good to know! I 8y
TheNextBook I was going to get this. Until I started seeing so many reviews about how tiring this book is. Maybe one day. It wasn't a priority and it wont become one anytime soon. 8y

Suzze I so wanted to read this as an e-advance but quickly started seeing not-so-good reviews so I decided against it. 8y
shawnmooney I bailed too - with all the many historical characters, it was impossible to follow on audio. I did think I might give it another try later on e-book. But maybe I still won't enjoy it. The topic itself is endlessly fascinating but this book seems to have some problems, no matter the format… 8y
Zelma I just got this from the library. I can already see why it will be tedious but I plan to read some to toon concurrently. She sure does use one work when six will do, I've noticed. 8y
Zelma *she sure doesn't use one word when six will do. (I blame the wine I had tonight) 8y
moranadatter I bailed on it a year ago. Seeing @MrBook's posts made me want to give it another chance. I think I am going to approach it as reading dense source material in an archive rather than a boom and see if that helps. 8y
moranadatter Oops! Not boom! Book! 8y
Books_Wine_Repeat @kmdartist that's why I started reading it. #litpeerpressure I think that's a good approach. I'd rather read a cereal box than that book again. 🙃 8y
Books_Wine_Repeat @Zelma Maybe I should've read while drinking. 🍷 8y
Books_Wine_Repeat @shawnmooney For me it was too annoying. Everything was speculation and I thought it would be more interesting. It turns out everyone was duped by a bunch of kids or something less paranormal and more 'backstabby'. 8y
moranadatter @Books_Wine_Repeat That's fair. I gave up when people started flying with no set up or discussion as to what was being described. 8y
MrBook @kmdartist You can read it as a boom too 😂👏🏻👍🏻🙌🏻. @Books_Wine_Repeat Great hashtag 😊! See, you didn't wait for my pairing 😆😜! 8y
Books_Wine_Repeat @MrBook There's not enough alcohol in the world for this book. 🤔🙅🏻🍺🍾🍷🍸🍹🍶 8y
StephBengtson My friend said it was "drier than a textbook". That was enough to turn me off. 8y
missberlyreads Ugh...that's too bad. This has been on my list since its release. 8y

I love little Greasle the Gremlin! I really can't leave a book unfinished so I'm reading to the end of the ones I didn't finish with the kids on the road trip. This book is sweet and I'm happy to read it through but in a broader sense I need to learn to be able to bail on books. How do people do it? I slog through them even if I hate them.

Owlizabeth Oh no, I'll quit a book with a quickness. Life's too short to read books you don't like, in my opinion. I don't know any tips besides just saying no. 8y
queerbookreader I usually just end up ignoring the book I'm part way through long enough until I finally become resigned to the idea that I don't want to finish it and shake the bookmark out and commit myself to bailing it. It's kind of passive lmao, but I'm working on it 8y
AmyS I used to not bail on books. I started by just putting down a book in an out-of-the-way spot where I wouldn't see it and leaving it for a few days. I realized I didn't care how it ended and was happy to be free. I still do that for many books I'm not enjoying. If I find myself wondering about it, I'll go back but more often than not, I just forget about it and move on. Life's too short and my TBR list is too long (and always growing). 8y

CherylDeFranceschi @lemonlime799 That's how I am, too! 8y
queerbookreader @CherylDeFranceschi I'm like 98% ready to finally get around to bailing Julie & Julia that I haven't touched in about a month, I'm nearing the end of my bail process. Ready to get a bookmark back!! 8y
LibrarianJen If I'm struggling too much but need the completion feeling I resort to skimming. I'll read the first and last couple paragraphs of each chapter or skip to the end and read the last chapter that way I know how it ends. 8y
BookishMarginalia I fully support --and practice-- the #bookbail but it did take me a long time to teach this state of enlightenment 😜 Life is just too short for unsatisfying books when there are so many others waiting for my attention. 🤓 8y
BookHermit I find ebooks are easier to ditch. They get pushed back in the menu and I delete them--eventually. Some pop up on Litzy and haunt me, though. 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag Read the last paragraph of the book... If it's amazing continue reading the book otherwise pull that bookmark out and make Nancy Pearl proud! Think of all the amazing books that *this* book is preventing you from reading! 8y
[DELETED] 2232195534 Know it's hard to quit, but many years ago someone taught me the 'rule' of 100. Take your age and subtract from 100. That's the number of pages to give a book before deciding to bail. Each year it decreases by 1. We'll never get to read all the good books. Why waste time on a book that's not working for us? 😀. P.S. My number of pages to read is now 42. Ha! 8y
[DELETED] 3558467437 I read the last chapter or so if I am feeling guilty and/or care about the conclusion. #lifeistooshort 8y
readinginthedark If I make it to page 100, I make myself finish it. But it takes me a while to get to 100 pages since I jump around my books. That makes a difference, I think, how long it will take you to read it. 8y
Bibliogeekery @Owlizabeth @AmyS @BookishMarginalia - I like the "life is too short" concept of bailing on bad books - and it's so true! Maybe I should make a bookmark with that written on it as a reminder! ? 8y
Bibliogeekery @kaysreadinglife I've never heard of the rule of 100. What a great concept! (My number is 59) I'll try this! 8y
