peanutnine It's crazy how everyone just acts like she should know her way around the house and all the routines. I guess they assumed Max told her ahead of time? She definitely needs the courage to speak up and ask questions 7mo
Ruthiella I think the staff were possibly also expecting another Rebecca - who would tell them “I don‘t want a fire in the morning room, light it in the library”. 7mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig This is where I start to really dislike Max. He just dumps her in the house, doesn't bother to even show her around, and he knows Evil Mrs D is manipulative. Also he acts like he's so busy running Manderley but he's been gone for WEEKS. And it not like today when you can keep in touch by email and smart phones. I'm quite sure Manager of the estate doesn't need his help. 7mo
ElizaMarie I had to look up the plant (ha!) I thought I knew what it was, but I wasn't 100% sure. Anyway, I can't tell if Mrs. D wants her to be more arrogant like the old Mrs or um.. what? It sounds like Jan is way more easygoing and could be easier to “serve“ under but instead, they keep bullying her. And shame on Max, he knows Mrs. D is difficult but.. yet doesn't even show her the after-breakfast room!? 7mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig I just want to yell at Jan to stop daydreaming. Which makes it sound like I don't like this book but I really do. 7mo
julieclair Jan needs a spine for sure. She‘s letting the servants walk all over her. But she also needs to ask more questions, so she can learn how things work at Manderley. Everyone already knows she‘s clueless, so why not ask? I wonder if we‘ll ever find out what‘s up with Mrs. D and/or exactly what happened to Rebecca? (edited) 7mo
dabbe So glad you posted this pic! What about those bloody rhododendrons on the pathway to Manderley? Jan HATES them. They're too full of life, too large, too in-your-face, too ... like Rebecca? Wonder if there's some symbolism there? 😂 7mo
Roary47 I‘m with many of you in your upset with Max. He could have waited at least a day to show her around. Jan also might just be trying to be nice on top of her not asking questions and speaking up. 7mo
TheAromaofBooks @julieclair - I felt the same way. Like when she pretended like she already knew the way to the morning room. She hasn't even been there 24 hours! Why would it be embarrassing to ask where that is?? I always feel bad for the narrator when I read this book, but also spend about half the time just wanting to shake her and tell her to stop assuming the worst about everything! 7mo
Clare-Dragonfly I thought it was weird that all the servants refer to Rebecca as Mrs. de Winter as though Jan isn‘t Mrs. de Winter now… but then Mrs. Danvers did call her that, so I don‘t know what to think! Would the servants like them to be completely interchangeable? 7mo
Aimeesue @dabbe Symbolism?? What symbolism?? I must have missed it. 😂 I‘m def on Team NO Rhododenrons though. They too extra for me. 7mo
dabbe @Aimeesue New hashtag: #teamnorhodo 😂 7mo
