I'm hoping to finish TNOD today, then hopefully move on to The Husbands, but that's only if my brain cooperates. I might have to reread something I've read a bajillion times instead. #interestingtimes

bookandbedandtea @Jerdencon Sorry Denise, I really wanted to get this off to you this past week but now I'm determined to send it Monday. I'll confirm when it's on its way. 3w

julesG Well, if the UU has to send a wizard abroad, it has to be Rincewind. Who else is going to bungle around and accidentally save the day? I loved the Luggage finding a mate and making small luggage. And I found the Silver Horde amusing and annoying at the same time. 5mo

BookWrym Seeing recurring themes in the Rincewind novels the Greek like gods, fate and of course Rincewind just being a force of chaos. I really liked the Horde and the fact that wheelchair bound or deaf nothing gets in the way of a good fight. Also liked their observations about how uncivilised civilisation is what with poisoning and torture and saying things you don‘t mean. 4mo
BarbaraJean @julesG I loved the Luggage offspring as well! I enjoyed the fact that there was more going on here beyond just the jokey bits. @BookWyrm Yes, I enjoyed the observations on “civilization“ as well! There was also some good commentary on the use of power, and the impact of a “revolution“... especially when the people you're fighting for haven't even been consulted. 4mo
willaful @BarbaraJean Yes, I felt this had more social commentary than the previous Rincewind books and subsequently was more interesting.

I'd like to know how everything came out. How did Cohen wind up at the Troll Bridge? Was the luggage forever free and just a family bag? 😁
4mo
julesG @willaful Can't remember about Cohen, but I'm sure we'll find out about the luggage in Last Continent. 4mo
kwmg40 I enjoyed the social commentary and satirical elements of Interesting Times, but the subplot with The Luggage was the best! The scenes with the Silver Horde were fun too. I also liked Troll Bridge, especially the ending. 4mo

julesG Okay. I'm going first. I would have loved to find out more about The Luggage's love life and how little luggages are made. 😁 Overall I thought that Rincewind was pretty much Rincewind, no big surprises in the story. I really liked the rumours about the barbarian invaders though; walking through walls and so on. 😂😂 5y

Soubhiville I love the idea of baby luggages @julesG ! Maybe there‘s some fan fic out there somewhere. 🤣 5y
julesG @Soubhiville But The Luggage is an ass. He leaves his wife/girl and the little ones behind and follows Rincewind. That's not what I thought would happen. 5y
khooliha The things I liked best about this book were bits around the edges: Ridcully being nice to Rincewind, the little weather butterfly when it finally shows up and does little weather, Hex. The main plot is too white-saviour-y though! 5y
gossamerchild @khooliha yeah, some of his books age better than the others 😣. I feel like he was better at feminism than race. 5y
khooliha @gossamerchild That is absolutely the conclusion I'm coming to through this reread, which makes me nervous about revisiting Jingo. 5y
Gezemice @julesG I totally agree! More Luggage! lol. I have enjoyed the poking fun at Barbarian hero legends, too. Like they barely wore anything but it had to be all padded lol. 5y
Gezemice @gossamerchild @kooliha definitely better with feminism than race. There are some racial stereotypes. Overall though I think he was taking on totalitarianism rather than race. Men At Arms, Thud, and a later one, Snuff, all tackle racism head-on. Snuff is especially poignant, a departure for Pratchett, but one of my favorites for that reason. 5y
Gezemice Overall I enjoyed this one, Rincewind annoyed me less than before. He is kind pf growing on me. He did do some pretty heroic stuff and not always just because he found himself on the spot. The barbarians were hilarious. And the Red Army that was always so polite! And the description of a totaliatarian regime that kills independent thought was harking directly to my recent read Wild Swans, and how Maoist China policed thought completely. 5y
julesG @Gezemice Great points! I agree, I think the main idea was taking on totalitarianism. 5y
DrexEdit I liked it, with reservations. It was casually racist (while claiming not to be racist so TP knew he was skirting close to some sort of line) and conflated different Asian cultures as if they were the same thing. Still I enjoyed getting to know the Horde a bit better and TwoFlower came out of nowhere with some real backstory. Now I want more TwoFlower stories. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa May you live in Interesting Times indeed, I‘m beginning to feel a bit like poor Rincewind as our realty goes a bit wonky, and bless his soul he really does manage to save the day, while stepping his foot into trouble every step of the way. I quite enjoyed seeing the barbarian horde in all its aging glory, along with Twoflower and the Luggage again.
5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @DrexEdit Yes, I agree about the racism part...because he blended a bunch of stuff together to make many of his “fictional” Disc-lands he seems to skirt a lot of borderline racist stuff that would never fly if set in our “world”...although to be fair, I‘m finding that a lot of early sci-fi fantasy has that issue....sadly. 5y
julesG @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Agree with you on the racism in early sci-fi. Different times, different mind-set. 5y
