This is funny short story and part of the DiscWorld series by Terry Pratchett. Cohen goes to a remote bridge to find a troll. He expects to battle the troll and take his treasure. Needless to say it doesn't go as planned. One of my favorites in the series.

julesG Well, if the UU has to send a wizard abroad, it has to be Rincewind. Who else is going to bungle around and accidentally save the day? I loved the Luggage finding a mate and making small luggage. And I found the Silver Horde amusing and annoying at the same time. 8mo

BookWrym Seeing recurring themes in the Rincewind novels the Greek like gods, fate and of course Rincewind just being a force of chaos. I really liked the Horde and the fact that wheelchair bound or deaf nothing gets in the way of a good fight. Also liked their observations about how uncivilised civilisation is what with poisoning and torture and saying things you don‘t mean. 8mo

I enjoyed the fact that there was more going on here beyond just the jokey bits. @BookWyrm Yes, I enjoyed the observations on “civilization“ as well! There was also some good commentary on the use of power, and the impact of a “revolution“... especially when the people you're fighting for haven't even been consulted. 8mo

willaful @BarbaraJean Yes, I felt this had more social commentary than the previous Rincewind books and subsequently was more interesting.

I'd like to know how everything came out. How did Cohen wind up at the Troll Bridge? Was the luggage forever free and just a family bag? 😁 8mo

julesG @willaful Can't remember about Cohen, but I'm sure we'll find out about the luggage in Last Continent. 8mo

kwmg40 I enjoyed the social commentary and satirical elements of Interesting Times, but the subplot with The Luggage was the best! The scenes with the Silver Horde were fun too. I also liked Troll Bridge, especially the ending. 8mo

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Daisey @JazzFeathers @wordslinger42 So odd to come across this one that he wrote for a Tolkien anthology, but in his Discworld way.... it made me think about the other book I‘m reading and after the war is won and the spiders in the trees gone and the plains of Rohan fenced. Weird cross reading overlap. This short story in Pratchett‘s world was fun, but the Middle Earth equivalent made me melancholy. 5y

JazzFeathers I remember reading this story long long years ago, before l first fell into Middle-Earth. You know, l was talking about it with a Tolkien friend, not long ago, about the melancholy of the Elves and the reasons why they leave Middle-Earth. I've been studying WWI lately for a writing project, it makes me think about Tolkien and his work a lot. 5y

JazzFeathers WWI was a big cut in history. There was a world before it and a world after it and the two worlds were so unlike each other that they could hardly understand each other. The Lost Generation, Tolkien‘s Generation, was educated for the world that was not there for them anymore longer. Pratchett probably spoke of a universal truth. But Tolkien spoke from experience. 5y
