Creature | Shaun Tan

I‘m a huge fan of Shaun Tan‘s work and I expected this to be my favorite yet since glimpses into the artists‘ mind is usually my jam, but for me this was #goodnotgreat The good was it was unexpected, I found a few unique insights, I got to see a new side of his painting style, I learned a few things about the man behind the work, but I felt less drawn in by the drawings when they weren‘t connected by a narrative and a lot of the writing felt flat.

All Over Creation | Ruth Ozeki

The other two I‘ve read by her were home runs, but this one was more #goodnotgreat. I‘d still love to read more Ozeki, though! #AuthorAMonth

Yumi runs away from her tiny Idaho town at 14 after sleeping with a teacher. As her parents age, a neighbor takes care of them, but when their health falters she returns with three kids in tow. Meanwhile, a group of organic food activists have targeted the area to protest GMO potatoes.

Soubhiville Wow your dogwood blossoms are huge! So pretty, I love them. 😍 8mo
Megabooks @Soubhiville Thank you! Yeah, I love that tree!! 💜💜 (edited) 8mo

This was a very quick read, perfect to distract me from a horrible cold. Three years ago I would of said I would never be ready to read about the pandemic. But now it feels distant enough. And it did not feel at the forefront of this story. So it was perfect for #booked2023 #setinapandemic There were definitely a couple of moments I didn‘t see coming. But I did start to get bored when parts of the timeline repeated word for word.

Cinfhen Hope you‘re feeling better ❣️agree, this book was #GoodNotGreat 1y

Bright Young Women | Jessica (Author) Knoll

Struggling to write this review - I liked it but something was off… It‘s an interesting premise for a novel - taking one of the most notorious serial killers in history, refusing to name him yet spin a story from the perspective of one of the sorority women who was in the house the night he murdered raped and strangled two young women and violently assaulted two other sorority sisters. There‘s a secondary story about another victim 👇🏼

Cinfhen Who goes missing in 1974 and her family refuses to believe she may have been a victim of the serial killer but her girlfriend refuses to give up searching for answers. This part of the story I didn‘t “enjoy” as much. I liked the dual narration. #GoodNotGreat 1y
BarbaraBB Besides the cover I love your review. Feel tempted to read it even though you‘re not that enthusiastic 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1y
CSeydel Great review. I read Luckiest Girl Alive and found it disappointing. 1y
Cinfhen @CSeydel I think this one is better than Luckiest Girl although the tone of her writing is similar in style / im happy I was able to #BorrowNotBuy but I do think you might enjoy this one @BarbaraBB 1y

I wanted to like this more than I did. It got unnecessarily complicated and difficult to follow. #GoodNotGreat

Bridge is devastated after her mother‘s death. But when she returns to pack up Mom‘s things, she finds out her mother may have jumped to another reality. As Bridge combs her notebooks and begins jumping realities to find her, a serial killer that can jump realities sets out eliminate Bridge from every universe. #aardvark

fredthemoose That‘s… quite a plot! 1y
Megabooks @fredthemoose that‘s not even the half of it with ancillary characters and alternate reality Bridges, killers, and yet more alternate reality ancillary characters…it was a lot. (edited) 1y
AudiobookingWithLeah This sounds a lot like The Shining Girls, also by this author. It too, was a lot to keep track of... 1y

BarbaraBB Sounds bonkers (edited) 1y
Cinfhen I didn‘t care for Shining Girls so I wast interested in this one 🤷🏼‍♀️ I think I made the right call 😄 1y
Cinfhen Nice color match 🩷 1y
Megabooks @AudiobookingWithLeah @Cinfhen good to know about another book. I‘m not particularly inclined to read more. 1y

The Many Lives of Mama Love | Lara Love Hardin

Pickpick

Hardin, who has ghost written dozens of books, is a talented author for sure, but at times her memoir about coming back from jail time and addiction lacked passion. She made important points about the difficulties for most women trying to complete probation requirements and get their children back in their custody. I have a great deal of respect for her journey back and the hard fought life she‘s built. #GoodNotGreat

Cinfhen Totally agree!!! Her story was definitely shocking and should have been riveting yet it often felt lackluster. 1y
BarbaraBB So many memoirs! Happy you‘re loving them. I haven‘t heard of any of the authors! 1y

Big Summer: A Novel | Jennifer Weiner

Complete fluff, but in a good way. Part cozy mystery, chick-lit & romance… influencers, high-school mean girls, a celeb wedding, and a coastal vibe, perfect to throw in a beach bag. But what made it for me, were the moments when our plus-size heroine was at her most relatable. Faking confidence, patronizing asides, aiming for body-confidence yet still being hurt by the so-called well-meaning insults disguised as compliments. All too familiar 🤦‍♀️

Cinfhen I first came across Sleeping Car @squirrelbrain from seeing a post from @TrishB - I loved the cover and then the story was sooo good 😊 1y
Cinfhen yeah it‘s definitely not a book you need to rush to @megabooks but it‘s worth a #BorrowNotBuy 1y
TheBookHippie I‘ve got CG sitting here -it‘s the last try of this author 🤣🤣💀😬 library book .. 1y
Cinfhen It does start off a bit shaky @TheBookHippie but I ended up really liking it! I hope you will too! The 60‘s surf culture is fun 🤩 1y

I REALLY LOVED both Victory City and Tom Lake ! Mama Love, Kala and Come Fly were #GoodNotGreat
Happiness Falls is an ARC which I was really looking forward to but it‘s not meeting my expectations. I‘ve been wavering between a total pan and so-so. Still have another 100 pages to go, maybe it‘ll get better 🤪

Deblovestoread Great week! Just started the Rushdie and loving it so far. 1y
squirrelbrain I too loved both the Rushdie and Tom Lake this week! #booktwins 👯‍♀️ 1y
TrishB Tom Lake was lovely ❤️ 1y

Cinfhen Perfect description @TrishB nothing gimmicky - just a heartfelt story about appreciating the life you‘ve built 1y
TrishB C asked me whether she would like it and I said no. Because I wouldn‘t have at 22. But at 55 I appreciated every word and every subliminal message. 1y
Cinfhen Yes, I think you need to be of a certain age to appreciate Tom Lake @TrishB 😘 1y
Bookzombie I think you have convinced me that if I have time this month I might try the Rushdie. Maybe, lol. 1y
Cinfhen I was really scared to take on Rushdie @Bookzombie but I REALLY loved it. From page one it just grabbed me!! LMK if you pick it up!!! 1y

A well written honest story of one woman‘s journey from addict to advocate. Lara Love Hardin doesn‘t hold back from sharing her highs and lows as she & her second husband lie, cheat and steal from friends, neighbors and family to feed their heroin addiction. This book left me with all the feels- anger, sadness, shock and hope. Read by the author. #BorrowNotBuy

Cinfhen It‘s #goodnotgreat @Megabooks but worth a library borrow when you‘re in the mood ❤️ 1y
Megabooks Thanks! I think I‘ll do just that! 😘😘 1y
Bookishlie This is my BOTM I think. That or aardvark. I get them mixed up. Lol 1y

Cinfhen @Bookishlie yes, it‘s a #BOTM choice - the premise really grabbed me - just don‘t Google her until after you read the book😁 1y
Bookishlie @Cinfhen good to know. So this is a legit true story then! 1y
