MinDea Sounds like a resounding start right away! I started working on the schedule last night. It's a long book and lots of chapters. Going to take a while to get through it. Jovy Loved everything about this chapter! From Eddie‘s inner struggles 💔 to Roland and Jake‘s touching reunion and even though I‘m not too fond of Detta, she was awesome here! 6y

PaperbackPirate I‘m behind but I‘m still going. Just finished this section yesterday! Demon rape is a new one for me. I love that Eddie battled his own inner demon - the voice of his brother- to not only save Jake but come into his own being. What a scary haunted house! On I go! Choo choo! 🚂 6y

tonyahoswalt What did you all think of hearing from Jake again? I'm curious about the second time things clicked for him. The first was when he was supposed to die. So the events in the second instance that he knew would happen, the beggar, the mirrors, etc. how did he know that? 6y

TK421 I really enjoyed the Jake chapters. I thought it was interesting how both Roland and Jake were feeling pulled in two after Mort was killed. 6y

EadieB @tonyahoswalt I just finished section II. In answer to your question, the only thing I can say is that the second time it said that he was under the umbrella of the ka-tet so that may be what was giving him the insight that he didn‘t have the first time. (edited) 6y

tonyahoswalt @TK421 Me too! I think Jake is my favorite character. I like the connection between him and the other characters, I guess that's what the ka-tet is all about. 6y

Andrew65 Yey! Finally caught up - like trying to catch a runaway train. Great to see the return of Jake, and quite a bizarre return with Jake knowing he should be dead. Not always sure I know all that is going on, quite some story Stephen wrote - no wonder some people say they have to read it 2 or 3 three times to get everything. Love the train!!! 6y

tonyahoswalt @Andrew65 It would definitely be weird to know you're supposed to be dead. I can understand why it was making him crazy. Are you liking this one more? 6y

Andrew65 @tonyahoswalt Yes it definitely feels as if the first two were introducing the main characters and now the story is being taken forward, not that I know where it is going mind you! But still a great adventure. 6y

tonyahoswalt @Andrew65 I really like it more as well. I feel like the writing is so much better, which makes sense. However, I was just talking to my husband about how, to me, it feels like there's barely a plot. Roland wants to get to the Tower, and Jake wants to get back to him. Other than that, it's about the connections between them all, I get that, but it feels like not a lot happens. @TK421 @EadieB 6y

TK421 @tonyahoswalt I understand what you mean. I am really enjoying this book, but I know that a lot has to happen before the story can progress. I agree that the writing is much better in this book as well. 6y

Jovy Finally caught up! 😅 I feel for Roland and Jake; can‘t imagine what I would do with constant voices fighting in my head! Also loved Jake‘s essay and his teacher‘s interpretation. 😂 6y

TK421 @EadieB I have to agree with you. Mort was awful. He tied a bit of the story together, but I was happy to see him go. After reading about Eddie, I expected The Pusher to be about drugs. 6y

MinDea Mort totally deserved what he got. I loved how they all sort of tied together in their old "when" worlds. Jovy I agree with everybody on Eddie‘s section! What struck me on this re-read was the almost insta-luv between Eddie and Odetta. Completely forgot that it unfolded like that. I also loved Roland in the gun and drug store scenes! Rolex for Keflex! 😂 6y

tonyahoswalt Eddie really grew on me. I look forward to hopefully liking Susannah as we get to know her, because I did not like Detta. Odetta was fine though. I know Mort was awful, but I think his section was my favorite. The connections really stuck out to me, and then yes, I was happy he got what he deserved. @EadieB @TK421 @BookwormM 6y

ScientistSam @EadieB @MinDea that was a great scene to be sure! It seems like there's a lot of injustice in this story/world. I also loved how Roland pays for the penicillin with a Rolex. 6y

ScientistSam @Jovy! Yes, loved the Rolex for keflex and sharpshooting scenes! It amazes me how careful Roland is to avoid shooting Innocents after the whole scene with Jake's death in the last book. 6y

MinDea @ScientistSam It is such an interesting character of Roland's to pay for the medicine and bullets and also not want Innocents to be hurt. I wonder if there is a sense of pride in the other "whens"? 6y

TheNeverendingTBR @TrishB The Drawing of the Three is he real beginning of The Dark Tower story, that's why I always implore people who dislike The Gunslinger to carry on until at least the end of book 2. How are you liking it now? 6y

wellreadredhead I didn‘t enjoy this one too much and I figured I wouldn‘t after reading King‘s disclaimer in the front stating that he knows it‘s not all that great. However, I have read a bit ahead and enjoyed the second book immensely more! 6y

Rudis I‘m really glad I read this one with a group - otherwise I might not have stuck with it. I think, oddly enough, my favourite section was the last one - what about everyone else? 6y

Karkar This one is my least favorite of the series. But I kept at it the first time as many told me it sets up Roland for the rest of the books. I agree with @BookwormAHN much better the second time around. 6y

BookwormM First time reader I didn‘t love it and I didn‘t hate it I just found it weird that said I love the setup fit the next book, the Oracle and the Man in Black 6y

TrishB First time I read it I just trusted in SK that things would become clearer in the rest of the series! And they do. This is only the second time I‘ve read it - as I‘ve skipped it ever since. I don‘t dislike and can see the scene setting much more clearly now 👍🏻 6y

BookishBelle @Rudis I‘m also glad I read it with a group for the same reason and the last section was also my favorite. I also found that by the end I was more invested in the characters so I think that helped some too. I‘m ready to move on to the second one! 6y

I definitely itely did not enjoy this book the first time I read it, but having read the entire series and re reading this one now I really loved it. I get the feeling of just not understanding what is going on. Jovy This was my 3rd read and it really gets better each round. I read somewhere this would have been better as as a prequel and maybe read after a few books in. But I think it helped for the newbies to have read it with a group (so we can cheer you on!) My favorite is the flashbacks to Roland‘s youth. 6y

BillBlume This is one of the few books I‘ve reread many times in my life. I loved it the first time, and love it even more now that I have a greater appreciation for the writing. That opening sentence is one of the best, and it accomplishes so much in such a small space. I wish some of the later books had been written with the same efficiency. This book has inspired a lot of my writing. 6y

BookwormM I think Roland and the man in Black are very similar they are both willing to sacrifice others to get what they want. 6y

BillBlume @MinDea regarding Roland and the Man in Black, they very much strike me as embodiments of order and chaos (in that order). I‘ve always loved the anti-hero aspect of Roland. He‘s so determined to catch his foe, that he‘ll cross almost any line to get there. They‘re like “The Fugitive,” but on acid. 6y

Rudis @MinDea I like both of them; it was the curiosity of what would happen when they met that made me keep reading. Roland intrigued me, and so did the Man in Black, as I wanted to know how they became who they are. @BillBlume Ooooo, you have a very good point about the order & chaos! I hadn‘t realized that until you pointed it out. 6y

MinDea @BillBlume Yes. The juxtaposition of Roland and The Man in Black was always one of the best aspects of this series. I love these two characters. 6y

BillBlume Just struck me that when I first read this book, I was just a teenager. I enjoyed Jake‘s character, because it was someone closer to my age in the story. I liked that he wasn‘t just a whiny kid. I reread this last year for the third or fourth time, and it‘s funny to realize that while I still like Jake, he‘s somewhat underdeveloped as a character. I have to wonder how much it‘s because it‘s Roland‘s point of view and he fears the attachment. (edited) 6y

MinDea @BillBlume I do think it might be that it is Roland's pov but also King was so young when he first wrote this book. I feel like you can really see King's writing changing throughout this series. 6y

TK421 I really enjoyed the Sergio Leone western feel of the first part of the book, and the flashbacks of Roland's younger days. It saddened me to see how little he seemed to care about saving Jake, but I have a feeling that he might turn up again. 6y

MinDea @TK421 I have never been much of a western fan but this series just blew me away! 6y

TK421 I love classic western movies, but I've only read a couple of western novels that I liked. This had the feel of a decent western. I still think Roland's fun time with the oracle will have repercussions later. 6y

Andrew65 I did struggle to get into the book in the first half, but really enjoyed the second half from about the time he met the Oracle. Shame what happened to Jake and I do hope we see him again @Tk421 . Intrigued by what happened at the end and interested to see where this is headed and the three. 6y

MinDea @Andrew65 was wondering where you were! I agree. Once Roland encountered the Oracle it really does seem to change and take off to start the story. 6y

Andrew65 @TK421 @Mindea I‘ve over committed 😳🙄 and have three Buddy Reads going on at the moment, The Alice Network, The American Marriage and the Sparrow, so not started it yet but have picked up a copy from the library - much bigger than the first book. 6y

ScientistSam Coming late to this conversation but I echo the other first time readers' opinions, @rudis and @BookishBelle. Not my favorite book but it definitely seems to be setting up the next! I'm also really glad to have read it with buddies to keep me going! 6y

MinDea @ScientistSam I remember my first time read of this. One of the books I set down for over 6 months cause it was just long and felt tedious after a while! I wish I had had Litsy and all of you to help me keep going cause when I finally did finish the series I just loved it. I am glad that we are all able to read this together!! 💙 6y

I enjoyed this book so much more the second time around than the first time I read the series. I remember just thinking "What. The. F@$!. did I just read?!?!" GrilledCheeseSamurai I actually really enjoyed this first book quite a bit this go around. A lot more then when I read it the first time anyways. It's pretty insane how small this story starts and how large it is when it finishes. I love that! 6y

MinDea @GrilledCheeseSamurai I so agree with you! It starts out with a crazy story at Tull and him just following the man in Black and then just takes off. So much happens and is said that really eludes to what is to come. I did not notice that the first time. This time I noticed so much! 6y
