Emma is in a panic as to what to do but she has no time. Lord Osborne arrives with much confidence and maybe arrogance. He proposes and Emma declines. He is shocked but very respectful. I actually felt bad for him. Robert is not going to be happy.

Ruthiella I felt bad for him too. We find out now that unbeknownst to us, other people have been giving him misleading information and false hopes. 2y

#wanderingthroughwutheringheights #pemberlittens #chapter16 2 hours after H leaves C prematurely gives birthday to a daughter, Catherine Linton. I had no idea she was this pregnant. C then is put out of her misery. Everyone is grieved especially H who curses her and asks her to haunt him until he dies. She is buried on a hill in the moors.

It's looking very Wuthering Heights at my house this morning with the full moon still visible.

This marks 1st time I've had sympathy for adult Heathcliff. Childhood H was easy to feel sorry for. Once he grew up not so much. His grief in this Chapter is so sad but also has me wondering how he will take his unhappiness out on others.

And I forgot to tag everyone yesterday. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Crinoline_Laphroaig My other question: If Cathy was so out of it, how did she deliver the baby? Did she come to when pains started? Why did Labor start when she was 7 months pregnant and basically just laying around? Is the 7 month baby significant? I'm Childfree by Choice. I've got no idea how this would work 3y

TheAromaofBooks I'm not sure if just the trauma of her illness would be enough to bring on labor?? Seven months seems very young for a baby to survive outside of a hospital setting! 3y

megnews Illness could bring on preterm labor or something else could. I don‘t think she could labor to delivery unconscious. I also don‘t think babies born this early during this era would survive. During this chapter I was asking myself is this a case of the author not having children or being exposed to childbirth, writing about something she doesn‘t know without a bit of research? (edited) 3y

mollyrotondo I actually didn‘t feel bad for Heathcliff in this chapter. Catherine is dead after giving birth while incredibly ill and he‘s asking Nelly if Catherine mentioned him before she died? And says he hopes she doesn‘t Rest In Peace because he‘s so selfish he wants her soul to wander and haunt him? I mean he cares about no one but himself. 3y

batsy @megnews @rubyslippersreads Yes, good point! It's entirely likely that it was out of Emily's expertise, and not something widely discussed/known if you were a single woman because rules of decorum and whatnot. It'll be interesting to know if that was the likely reason. 3y

Tineke Just reading this book and wanted to add my two cents. I don't think a 7-month old baby could survive back then. A baby of seven months born in this time would have probably gotten some medicine for the lungs to ripen. And I don't think they would exactly know at which term the baby was born. Nowadays we can almost know the date of conception or get real close to it. They wouldn't know back then. A very little child could also be the result of the 2y

Tineke mother being sick. Catherine was sick before the birth. My sister in law had hypertension and I think maybe even pre-eclampsia and her baby was born at 37 weeks, over 8 months pregnant. Her baby was tiny, 2450 grams (5lbs and 6 oz. Says Google) The baby needed some help the first week and had to stay in hospital. That Emily wouldn't know how childbirth works seems likely, but I think the above might have merit too. (edited) 2y

We see Fanny in her little den of comfort where she can be herself. Edmund comes up looking for Fanny to say something to support the decision he‘s clearly already made about the play. Fanny is put off by how much effort Edmund is putting in to caring for Ms. Crawford. Fanny ends this chapter in low spirits.

Catherine gets another dance with Henry Tilney, but as we would expect it‘s a bit spoiled by a Thorpe.

Isabelle plays the injured bird. It‘s not HER fault Captain Tilney insisted on dancing with her and only her.

Later, the Thorpes cover up their disappointment with James‘ inheritance with the fact they will need to wait 2 years to marry. Sweet Catherine still tries to assume the best in her 👀 friend 👀
