The Analects of Confucius
The Analects of Confucius: A Philosophical Translation | Roger T. Ames, Henry Rosemont Jr.
"To quietly persevere in storing up what is learned, to continue studying without respite, to instruct others without growing weary--is this not me?" --Confucius Confucius is recognized as China's first and greatest teacher, and his ideas have been the fertile soil in which the Chinese cultural tradition has flourished. Now, here is a translation of the recorded thoughts and deeds that best remember Confucius--informed for the first time by the manuscript version found at Dingzhou in 1973, a partial text dating to 55 BCE and only made available to the scholarly world in 1997. The earliest Analects yet discovered, this work provides us with a new perspective on the central canonical text that has defined Chinese culture--and clearly illuminates the spirit and values of Confucius. Confucius (551-479 BCE) was born in the ancient state of Lu into an era of unrelenting, escalating violence as seven of the strongest states in the proto-Chinese world warred for supremacy. The landscape was not only fierce politically but also intellectually. Although Confucius enjoyed great popularity as a teacher, and many of his students found their way into political office, he personally had little influence in Lu. And so he began to travel from state to state as an itinerant philosopher to persuade political leaders that his teachings were a formula for social and political success. Eventually, his philosophies came to dictate the standard of behavior for all of society--including the emperor himself. Based on the latest research and complete with both Chinese and English texts, this revealing translation serves both as an excellent introduction to Confucian thought and as an authoritative addition to sophisticated debate. From the Trade Paperback edition.

I wasn‘t sure what to expect from this Classical Chinese work. I wanted to read it cause I‘d heard Confucius was essential to understand China and I read a short introduction once that didn‘t feel deep enough. While very gnomic and containing so many layers of meaning that I see why people have been writing about this for millennia, this was a lot more readable than I expected and it made me think a lot. Very approachable translation and notes

Reading The Analects was difficult because I didn‘t understand its cultural or historical relevance. I spent some time looking into its history & this helped me to understand how important it is to read this as an historical document.

Historical documents aren‘t usually the most exciting reads, but I gained a greater understanding, &, I hope, appreciation for an aspect of world history.

Thanks for the opportunity to read this, @SerialReader !

I'm enjoying the Analects, and finding many sayings to ponder, but I know I should buy a copy with a good introduction and explanatory notes in order to truly appreciate this classic work. Maybe someday... But for now, #SerialReader is a great way to break the sayings up into manageable chunks and get acquainted with the work! #litsyclassics #letterA Have any of y'all read this?

Not pictured: a hot cup of Jasmine Romance green tea. 😊

I'm loving my three current #litsyclassics reads on #SerialReader, each for very different reasons! #letterA has intriguing philosophical thoughts, #letterY has a suspenseful sci fi plot, and #letterZ has lovely descriptions and dramatic characters! #SerialReader is extra perfect this year, since my phone is in airplane mode for the year! So when I don't have wifi, all I can do on it is read! 🤗

There were times I couldn't find time to read. And there were times I couldn't stop reading and missed life instead. What is life without living it... and what is knowledge without reading? Both go hand in hand.

I figured it was time I show you the reason for the "Sew" in "SewItGoes"! I made this last week for my desk at work. :) (The quote I think is Obama referencing Confucius but either way it's a favorite.)
