Sea of Poppies
Sea of Poppies: A Novel | Amitav Ghosh
At the heart of this vibrant saga is a vast ship, the Ibis. Its destiny is a tumultuous voyage across the Indian Ocean; its purpose, to fight China's vicious nineteenth-century Opium Wars. As for the crew, they are a motley array of sailors and stowaways, coolies and convicts. In a time of colonial upheaval, fate has thrown together a diverse cast of Indians and Westerners, from a bankrupt raja to a widowed tribeswoman, from a mulatto American freedman to a freespirited French orphan. As their old family ties are washed away, they, like their historical counterparts, come to view themselves as jahaj-bhais, or ship-brothers. An unlikely dynasty is born, which will span continents, races, and generations. The vast sweep of this historical adventure spans the lush poppy fields of the Ganges, the rolling high seas, the exotic backstreets of Canton. But it is the panorama of characters, whose diaspora encapsulates the vexed colonial history of the East itself, that makes Sea of Poppies so breathtakingly alivea masterpiece from one of the world's finest novelists.

As the first book in the series, I enjoyed how Ghosh set the scene with this book and delved into the characters.
I have the second book on hand (though I don't know when I will get to it) but I have read some reviews and am unsure if I will like how the series continues....

merelybookish Haha I read this book this year, and felt the same. Just not sure I wanted to read on even though I enjoyed this one. 2y
Smarkies @merelybookish 😂😂😂 such an odd reaction no? 2y
LeeRHarry I finished this series last year and it was a bit of a slog tbh but I was determined 😏 2y
Smarkies @LeeRHarry ahhhhhh! This makes me really in doubt whether to continue. 😂😂😂 I may just do book 2 since I have it on hand. 2y

A Black sailor from the US, a Hindu widow, a disgraced Raja, an orphaned French girl, a Muslim boatman, a Chinese pirate, just a few of the characters brought together by fate and opium on board the Ibis as it sails from Calcutta to Mauritius in 1838. How they come together is the premise of this first book in a trilogy, which is full rich back stories, sailor jargon & Indian dialects. A compelling read. Has anyone read the series? I'm undecided.

Hoping to finish them both by Monday.

merelybookish @vivastory It's a bit of a swashbuckler tale set in India. I am enjoying it, more than I expected. But it's first in a trilogy. Not sure I will read the other two. 3y

Before I started I didn't realize it was part of a trilogy... After reading this book I will be buying the next two 😁. The author builds such strong and interesting characters and it is great to see how they start to fit in together. Such different and interesting time and place presenting huge challenges for characters. At times I thought I wouldn't fully understand the story as he switches between languages with a lot of almost pidgen English.

Loving this book but wonder how difficult it must be for people who don‘t know at least a little Hindī. Some pages are packed with Hindī vocabulary.

Today‘s book is “Sea of Poppies.” It‘s historical fiction set mostly on a boat before the Opium Wars. This book was complex and well-written but it took foreverrrrrrrr to get going, to the point where I almost quit on it. Ultimately, I mostly enjoyed it but I‘m in no rush to read the sequel.

ApoptyGina69 Agreed. I did quit it. Weird, bc these are the “types” of books I love the most. 7y

Finally finished reading my first 500 page-r of the year. Set in the early 19th century, this account of historical fiction (1st of the Ibis trilogy) is a well crafted story with character detailing at its core; constituting multitude of tales (how they come together!) weaved in a logical and organized structure. The action happening in the last 100 pages provides a brilliant ending, making the reader curious to pick up the 2nd in the series.

PurpleyPumpkin I had no idea this was a series! And I‘ve had this on my tbr forever. Glad to hear that you enjoyed it so much. 👍🏽 7y
EvieBee I‘ve been meaning to read this for a long time but the length always intimidated me. I need to pull this off my shelf. 7y
Tanisha_A @PurpleyPumpkin @EvieBee It's along read, yes, but will keep you captivated. Just a heads up - it has Hindi (archaic form, and Indian regional pronunciations) words in between, which is a challenge for someone who doesn't know the language. But overall, one would still be able to get the gist of the statement. 7y

What an interesting read! Wish I was getting more time to spend with it.

Lindy It‘s too bad you don‘t have much time to spend with this because it‘s got complex layers. If you have time to think about it when you aren‘t reading it, I think you will find it even more rewarding. It made a big impression on me. 7y

Time to check out more of his writing!

I loved this. Ghosh has created memorable characters, on a journey downriver & then from Calcutta through the Bay of Bengal on the Ibis. He builds up rich details with layers of setting, sounds & history & joyful use of vernacular. Great empathy for his characters & despite his care & precision the writing is light & the plot moves quickly. I was swept up in the story & even in confronting scenes, there is comforting sense that good will win out.

Centique Great review! 7y

I‘m reading this for a grad course on literary theory, and if I hadn‘t been I might have given up on it (the exposition is exhaustively detailed. Emphasis on exhaustion). The pace does eventually pick up and the story becomes gripping–but not until literally 350 pages along, and then suddenly the book is over. I suppose that‘s one way to get people to pick up the sequel, but I can‘t help wondering how many never even made it that far. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

quote
MLRio

The truth is, sir, that men do what their power permits them to do. We are no different from the Pharaohs or the Mongols: the difference is only that when we kill people we feel compelled to pretend that it is for some higher cause. It is this pretence of virtue, I promise you, that will never be forgiven by history.
