The first novel I‘ve read by Terry Pritchett. It‘s 1916 on the Western Front where Private Percy Blackney awaken on the grass. Where he hears birds singing and the breeze stirring in the leaves. The novel has “steppers” who are able to travel from one world to others. There are lots of humorous little tales and the fiction wound up in the book. The characters are definitely different. It was a fun read. 4/5

BooksNBowls I want to read some Terry but idk where to start!! 2d

So after typing this all out, I realized I have a number of thoughts....if you haven't read the Discworld, or much of Terry Pratchett, this probably won't feel relevant to a critique of this book, it's a subjective review, I realize.
Disclaimer done, onto the ranting! 1/?

Robotswithpersonality Solidifies my preference for Terry Pratchett's fantasy over his sci-fi. I was unwilling previously to come to any solid conclusion as to the strength of his sci-fi as his previous SF books are among his earliest works, but given the publishing date on the start of this series, I feel safe in saying it just doesn't have the same life as his fantasy.
I acknowledge that the Discworld books, especially the earlier volumes are usually more about the adventure than the people involved. While wonderful exceptions in the persons of Moist Von Lipwig, Tiffany Aching and my fave, Samuel Vimes exist, personal development always felt secondary to larger social commentary, which, don't get me wrong, worked very well. 2/?
1y
Robotswithpersonality But in this sci-fi series, about 50% of the social commentary space is now speculative science, and that combined with the very shallow reaches at interpersonal storytelling leaves it feeling a bit empty.
I don't know the level of Stephen Baxter's influence on this overall vibe, I've never read from him solo and I could not detect a unique voice.
Even more distressing, there's almost no evidence of the quirky, cheeky, even hilarious warmth I so love about Pratchett's writing in the Discworld series. 3/?
1y
Robotswithpersonality This book was published between Snuff and Raising Steam so I KNOW it can't be down just to the tragedy of Pratchett's final years managing the effects of his Alzheimer's.
As a series starter, it ends disatisfactorily, not quite on a cliffhanger, presumably to get you to read on, and because so much was covered there was no way it would all be tied up in one book. But even being desperate for those remaining works written by an author now passed, I'm not sure there's enough of his voice evident here to make me want to continue. 4/?
1y
See All 9 Comments
Robotswithpersonality This also makes me lean further towards my developing hypothesis that rather than having a preference for either sci fi or fantasy, I need works in either genre to not go so high concept that they lose moments of human warmth and humour.
If you have an interest in archaeology/the evolution of early man, the potential of AI/reincarnation, whatever branch of physics multiverse is covered under, or politics/manifest destiny BS there's a number of interesting threads explored here. 5/?
1y
Robotswithpersonality Do not get me started on why the two British authors decided to set not only the bulk of the action, but the bulk of the characters as American (without being able to leave some of their palpably English idioms behind)?!
Perhaps as a result of my difficulty in staying invested in the story, it struck me that the premise could make a good video game (don't trust my assessment, I never got the hang of that form of entertainment): traveling between parallel worlds, not always very different from modern earth, so not too much a strain on the design department, with an option to either explore further, encounter species, OR set up a new civilization/pioneering on a certain world. 6/?
1y
Robotswithpersonality Perks: badass Harley riding, fed clobbering nun; robot cat that acts as a humane live trap for rodents; the times I could count on one hand that AI/reincarnated Lobsang was amusing in his incongruity i.e. sampling experiences/interacting with humans

Definite NOs: the 'for the plot' basically unexamined abandoning of one kid to go off and explore the universe, a family we barely hear from in relation to this kid after the abandoning, a kid we don't hear from until the resentment has reached catastrophic proportions;
I don't need the guy in his twenties appraising the attractiveness of the girl who 'looked in her late teens' 😑 ; Sinister 'paradise filter' on one world apparently ableist as well. 7/?
1y
Robotswithpersonality Even in Ankh-Morpork, the famously corrupt city of the Discworld, I felt like the best bits of humanity were shining among the worst, and even the worst had the option for redemption. Maybe it's a function of speculative sci fi that the worst case scenario is examined a little more often, but I felt like there were a lot less moments to remember humanity's positive as well as negative traits in this book.

Will I eventually cave and sample the next book in the series? Probably. Although the fact that it's called The Long War is not making me more enthusiastic. 🤷🏼‍♂️ 8/8

I listened to this one and found myself spacing out quite a bit. People can travel through a Multiverse. Every other earth had no humans in it. I would have liked a little alternative earth's where the other country in war had won instead of what had happened. World building wasn't too bad however the characters lacked for me. This may need a physical read before I say that I don't like it.

Let me first say that I love Pratchett. However, this book didn't read like a typical Pratchett book. I thought the premise was good but the execution was lacking. The plot was weak. It needed more tension. Also, the ending was just blah. I felt it needed more of a punch. 3⭐️

What is humanity to do when faced with an infinite number of seemingly empty Earths? It‘s time for Manifest Destiny. Again. *sigh*

Not sure what I was expecting, but plotless sci-fi colonialism wasn‘t it. This felt disjointed, lots of characters show up then disappear, & a plot doesn‘t make an appearance until 3/4 of the way through. We get flashes of Pratchett‘s wit, but I was not impressed. On top of all that, an abrupt cliffhanger. 🌕🌕🌑🌑🌑

Lyssa131330 I felt the same, I was so disappointed with it. It didn‘t feel like a Terry Pratchett book at all 2y

GingerAntics This was such a strange book. I swear, I‘m still processing it. 2y
Soubhiville Agreed @GingerAntics it‘s strange. But I loved it! I read it years ago, so the details aren‘t clear anymore. Also I read the first 3 in the series and don‘t think I can separate the plots. But I loved that it all stemmed from a potato and the MC‘s refusal to commercialize his invention, instead making it instantly available to the world. ❤️ 2y
See All 10 Comments
GingerAntics @Soubhiville what? I didn‘t get ANY of that. I wasn‘t sure what the point of the story even was. I was nearly 75% when I started feeling like I knew what was even happening. 2y
BookmarkTavern Yeah I felt the same as @GingerAntics . I wasn‘t sure what the plot was and I felt the ending was way too abrupt for me to feel any kind of satisfaction. 2y
julesG I bailed, ladies and gentlemen. 🙈🙈🙈 I'm off to roll in a mountain of ash, or whatever I'm supposed to do to show how ashamed I am. 2y
BookmarkTavern @julesG LOL I kind of wish I had bailed. 😅 i just kept expecting everything to come together, and it didn‘t. I might be giving the rest of this series a skip. 2y
GingerAntics @ozma.of.oz it really did just suddenly end. It made no sense. I seriously considered bailing. I think the only reason I didn‘t was because I had the audiobook and was listening at 3x the speed by that point. 2y
khooliha I have tried to reread this twice and bailed twice, so I've decided to donate the 3 books of this series I have. I kind of liked the peeks on people that felt like flash fiction, but it wasn't enough to keep me reading. 2y

It took me a while to get into this one (about 75% through), but suddenly it just worked for me. I can‘t really explain it. Then it just abruptly ended with this inexplicable emerge and phone call. I cannot wait until we read the second book, now. This is much different than discworld or anything else I‘ve ever read of Pratchett‘s. Clearly that is the influence of Baxter.

julesG What?! I have to get 3/4 through for it to become interesting? Erm, sorry, Sir Terry, I can't. 2y
GingerAntics @julesG maybe you‘ll enjoy it more. Maybe it will make more sense to you. I didn‘t get the point until then, and nothing that needs explaining gets explained, so you‘re trying to figure everything out. Oy, you‘d think Terry would have made this more tolerable. Dunno. 2y

GingerAntics @julesG fingers crossed. How far in are you? 2y
julesG Three or four chapters. Put it away about 3 weeks ago, but haven't thrown it off the kindle yet. 2y
GingerAntics @julesG at least it‘s still on the kindle. 🤷🏼‍♀️ So you get my issue then. That makes me feel better. I worried it would just be me. 2y

This book, at 2 hours of audio, is such a slog. I don't find any of these characters interesting, and the thick layer of colonialism/manifest destiny is actively pushing me away. #OokBOokClub

This was my second read through of this book. My first read was on audio and I had trouble getting into. My first read through was quite a while ago, and I think I even may have DNF'd, so I bought the books secondhand thinking I may enjoy more in print.

⬇️

LazyOwl I found the premise of this interesting, but I had difficulty getting into this. The pacing was a bit slow and I didn't really feel like I started enjoying the story until about 3/4 of the way through. I have the 2nd and 3rd books in the series and I'm still undecided if I'll read them. Right now I don't really have any pressing desire to find out what happens next. 4y
Kenyazero The pacing of this book is definitely weird! The concept is so cool and the narrative's quips are enough that I enjoyed this one more than it might have deserved. 4y
LazyOwl @Kenyazero Yeah, I agree Lobsang and Joshua's banter was good, but sometimes I just wanted the story to move along. I'm undecided if I'll read book 2 & 3. I might be in the mood for them later down the track. 4y

A quiet and philosophical sci-fi with an intriguing premise and shot through with a gentle humour. It won‘t be to everyone‘s taste as there‘s not a great deal of action and I get the sense that this first book is all about world building and moving characters into place for the main story to start. After the plans for a "stepper device" are leaked onto the internet , people are able to step their way into parallel universes which are uninhabited but looks similar to what they know in the current world.
