Improvisers: A Murder and Magic Novel
Improvisers: A Murder and Magic Novel | Nicole Glover
5 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
For fans of Nghi Vo, P. Djl Clark, and Alix E. Harrow: a new stand-alone set in the world of the critically acclaimed Murder and Magic series during Prohibition. The Improvisers is the tale of Velma, a barnstorming pilot and former magic bootlegger, who pursues dangerous enchanted items and a mystery that crosses the US and cuts through time--right to the heart of her family's past and present.Velma Frye is many things. A pilot, a former bootlegger, a well-seasoned traveler, a jazz pianist...and a wielder of celestial magic. She's also a member of the mystical Rhodes family as well as an investigator for arcane oddities for a magic rights organization, dealing with both simple and complicated cases. And when a pocket watch instigates a magical brawl after one of her flight shows, things become very complicated. In 1930s America, enchanted items are highly valuable, especially in the waning days of the magical Prohibition. As Velma digs deeper, she discovers the watch is part of a collection of dangerous artifacts manipulating people across the country--and in some cases, leading to their deaths. Something about all this is tickling Velma's memories, and the more she discovers, the more these seemingly isolated incidents feel as if they're building to something apocalyptic.Connecting the dots isn't easy, though, and further complicating her work is journalist Dillon Harris. He hounds her steps, and while not actively sabotaging her investigation, he also clearly knows more than he lets on. Whether it's his presence that she finds so vexing or his easygoing charm, that's a mystery she isn't interested in solving. Because someone is out there seeding cursed objects with the intent on wreaking havoc, and Velma will have to use every trick in her tool kit, including some well-placed magical improvisation, to win the day.Focusing on a new generation of the Rhodes family, The Improvisers brims with charming magic, intriguing mystery, and high-flying adventure seeking new heights.

This was a long and winding road but a fun ride. More a magical caper with a few murders than a mystery with a little magic. Can be read as a standalone but also a nice companion to the earlier books.

I‘ve kind of lost the thread on various reading challenges, but I‘m doing well on my Goodreads goal with a little over five (!) weeks left in the year.

I nearly forgot about #hyggehourreadathon tonight!

This afternoon my book club had its periodic social meeting at a brewpub. It was a fun time but lasted much longer than expected due to staggered arrival times. So I got home late and still had to do some household administrivia before settling in for the evening.

Now I‘m alternately watching football, playing on social media, reading the tagged book, and trading eye blinks with the cat.

kspenmoll Trading eye blinks with your cat!!!! Love it! 1w

I like to read a mix of both. Like @BookmarkTavern I don‘t especially like cliffhangers.

I like books that are part of a series but can also be read on their own. The tagged book is an example. It‘s part of an entertaining series, but the action skipped forward from the 1870s to the 1930s. You don‘t need to know all the details of the earlier books to enjoy this one.

#sundayfunday #hyggehourreadathon

Susanita I also don‘t like sequels just for the sake of having a sequel. They‘re not always necessary and don‘t always add to the story. 2w
Chrissyreadit i love a solid series- but prefer when it‘s already completed and i don‘t have to wait for a next book 2w
BookmarkTavern I really loved this book! And yeah, stand alone books in a shared universe are great! Thanks for sharing! 2w

Pickpick

Magical artifacts are going missing, & the bodies start dropping. Velma‘s detective work for the Muses is put to the rest when she has to chase down a mysterious organization w/ plans for destruction.

A return to the world of The Conductors & I couldn‘t be happier! Glover‘s historical work is wonderful. It‘s fascinating to see the evolution of the magic, bad ass lady pilots, a mystery, a road (plane) trip, & a surprise little romance! 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

1. Rainy day, comfy chair, purring cat, suitable beverage, maybe some soft music
2. NGL. I‘ve had to set a few things aside because they‘re hitting differently than they did a couple days ago. That‘s why I‘m glad the tagged book came out of its Libby hold for me yesterday. Historical mystery with magic? Yes please!
