#10BeforeTheEnd

This took me longer than I'd expected, I guess I didn't fully get into it. It doesn't feel much like it relies on Christmas for the mood/setting, except by getting Liane into the whole thing (which could be produced by any visit). So, not a super-seasonal read. I saw the culprit quite early, because it's pretty fair-play as a mystery.

Overall, not a favourite, but pleasant enough.

And hey, one of my #10BeforeTheEnd.

This memoir of 1930s archeological digs in Syria is, unsurprisingly, all kinds of problematic. Still, if you're fond of Christie's voice there's a lot to enjoy, not least of which is her own enjoyment. It's kind of awesome to read about a middle-aged woman gamely heading out on adventures, and as a working member of a team. As a fan, it's also fun to notice where she used her experiences in her fiction.

Ruthiella I liked it too, despite some of the more cringe-worthy parts. I thought the bit about the deaf vicar in the train misunderstanding her relationship to the serviceman was hilarious. 3h

A soft pick.
1st my quibbles. A strained set-up. Lots of telling not showing what an oddball detective Merivale is. Women are mousey bores or sirens. The only sign of Xmas is a dusting of snow.
And yet, I spent the whole day engrossed, reading to find out who did it.

Ruthiella I think the fact that there‘s (almost) always a resolution at end is what I find so satisfying about crime fiction. 🎄🔪🎅🏻💀 10h

I‘m probably more on the “self-absorbed ranting” side of the above quote, and philosophy is not my thing at all, but as the wife of a MechEng who maintains all his own vehicles, I found much of interest in this book.

I always enjoy spending some time in the world of Murakami. I didn‘t love this one quite as much as a few of his other books, but the idea of living in a library or in the woods sounds pretty great right now. One more from my #10BeforeTheEnd pile.

BarbaraBB This was my first Murakami and it turned out not to be my favorite either 2d

My 7th #10beforetheend book.

Multiple perspectives: Frank, suffering from PTSD retuning from Korea, his beloved little sister, Cee, who needs rescuing, Lenore, their bitter step grandmother, and Lily, a good woman Frank leaves behind. All against the backdrop of a racist America that impedes and imperils the characters‘ lives.

It is Toni Morrison, so it‘s good, but compared to other of her books, I found it slight. I‘d have liked more.

ChaoticMissAdventures ✔️✔️ Morrison is always a solid choice 3d

What an exciting political thriller!

The best part of the book were the characters. I loved the two main characters, Kostas and Jessica. Sometimes in thrillers characters can take a backseat to the action of the story, but not here. They were well developed and I loved their bond.

The story was well crafted. It was fast paced and had short chapters.
