Pickpick

Three grown up sisters and their families are on holiday and lots of drama unfolds - some of it a bit farfetched but it made a compulsive, enjoyable read. Each of the sisters have their own things going on and they were all as interesting as each other. Most chapters in the present but some going back in time to when the girls were little, from their perspectives and their mother‘s. #10beforetheend

Hello, fellow Littens. It's time for another readathon. #TheCandyCaneReathaton theme is for when we go out to Christmas Parades or shopping, maybe even just being at home enjoying our hot chocolate with candy canes and a book just to relax and recharge. What book will you read during this time? A low-key readathon where you can tag me @Liseworks your choice of books and your progress

Dilara
post image

On Saturday, I went round the bookshops looking for Fontamara, which I had planned on reading and was on my #10BeforeTheEnd list. Didn't find it, but bought other books anyway 😊. And all my library holds came at once, so here's my pile of books:
- Tagged Italian cookbook: read, liked it;
- Graphic work by Zerocalcare: read liked it;
- Ibn Khaldun anthology: 60 pages still to read;
- Boccace's Decameron: will probably be a year-long read;

and ⬇

Dilara -Le diable amoureux (The Devil in Love) by Cazotte, which has been on my shelves for a while and is also part of my #10BeforeTheEnd list 3d
Dilara - Noël by Jean Giono, because there was a pile of those next to the till, and I thought why not? It's cheap and timely (not in the database);
- Une fleur qui ne fleurit pas by Maria Messina, an Edwardian woman writer (not in the database) - one for #FoodAndLit #Italy;
- Salamalecs by Jesuthasan Antonythasan (not in the database);
- L'ultime humiliation by Rhéa Galanaki (not in the database).

I‘ve lived in Gloucestershire for 35 years, so it‘s shocking that I‘ve only just read Laurie Lee‘s tales from his post-WW1 childhood growing up in Slad. The tales vary from almost whimsical to quite brutal recollections, covering both the hardship and the happiness of a lifestyle that no longer exists.

Book 102 #Read2025 @DieAReader

julieclair This book keeps popping up on my “recommended for you” lists on various websites. It does sound like a nice “quiet” book. 3d
TheEllieMo @julieclair it‘s not as “quiet” as it seems, there are some quite dark moments in it, which I was not expecting. 3d
julieclair Oh! That‘s helpful to know. Thanks for the heads up. I‘m looking for quiet, cosy and sweet right now. 3d

This took me longer than I'd expected, I guess I didn't fully get into it. It doesn't feel much like it relies on Christmas for the mood/setting, except by getting Liane into the whole thing (which could be produced by any visit). So, not a super-seasonal read. I saw the culprit quite early, because it's pretty fair-play as a mystery.

Overall, not a favourite, but pleasant enough.

And hey, one of my #10BeforeTheEnd.

This memoir of 1930s archeological digs in Syria is, unsurprisingly, all kinds of problematic. Still, if you're fond of Christie's voice there's a lot to enjoy, not least of which is her own enjoyment. It's kind of awesome to read about a middle-aged woman gamely heading out on adventures, and as a working member of a team. As a fan, it's also fun to notice where she used her experiences in her fiction.

Ruthiella I liked it too, despite some of the more cringe-worthy parts. I thought the bit about the deaf vicar in the train misunderstanding her relationship to the serviceman was hilarious. 4d
willaful @Ruthiella lol yes. 4d

A soft pick.
1st my quibbles. A strained set-up. Lots of telling not showing what an oddball detective Merivale is. Women are mousey bores or sirens. The only sign of Xmas is a dusting of snow.
And yet, I spent the whole day engrossed, reading to find out who did it.

Ruthiella I think the fact that there‘s (almost) always a resolution at end is what I find so satisfying about crime fiction. 🎄🔪🎅🏻💀 4d
LeahBergen Well, I‘m a mousey siren. 😉 4d
