A Natural Woman: A Memoir | Carole King
22 posts | 10 read | 13 to read
The life that inspired Beautiful: The Carole King Musical on Broadway. Carole King takes us from her early beginnings in Brooklyn, to her remarkable success as one of the world's most acclaimed songwriting and performing talents of all time. A NATURAL WOMAN chronicles King's extraordinary life, drawing readers into her musical world, including her phenomenally successful #1 album Tapestry, and into her journey as a performer, mother, wife and present-day activist. Deeply personal, King's long-awaited memoir offers readers a front-row seat to the woman behind the legend. The book includes dozens of photos from King's childhood, her own family, and behind-the-scenes images from her performances.

While I generally liked this book and learned a lot about King, there are some choices she made in the writing of this memoir that made no sense. Tapestry is truly an iconic album — although that word is overused now — it‘s true in this case. Why did she spend so little time talking about it, it‘s development, and it‘s influence and so much time discussing a road dispute with her Idaho neighbors? #audiowalk

I was not aware that Carole King never really wanted to be a performer; James Taylor got her into it. This book is a little long, but I‘m still liking it. I got my walks in even though it looked like it was going to rain any second. #audiowalk

Megabooks Interesting!! 2y

I had no idea that when Carole King was 17, she got married, and by 18, she had a baby. That‘s so young! She doesn‘t quite tell her story in a completely chronological manner, but brings in past and future events if they relate to the story she‘s telling. #audiowalk

We went to the beach today, so we listened to The Concrete Blonde on the trip. I continued to listen to A Natural Woman on my walk, which I‘m enjoying. King narrates and her voice is soothing. It was a gorgeous day today, but I‘m sure the rain will return. 😊. #audiowalk

I actually started out my walk listening to Bomb Shelter, where, since I have epilepsy, I was especially interested in the story the author was telling about her son‘s first seizure. Then my book quit playing — I think because I‘d forgotten to download the book and was thus listening over my cellphone signal and got to a place where it wasn‘t good. So I switched to A Natural Woman (love Carole King). #audiowalk

@dabbe beat me to it, but couldn't help adding a post of my well-worn piano music of Carol King's #Tapestry album. @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

This beautiful memoir was more like a 7-decade retrospective of the music industry. Wow! No wonder Carole spent 12 years writing it! Hard to believe how many popular songs Carole and first husband Gerry Goffin wrote. I couldn‘t help humming at the mention of “Chains,” “One Fine Day, “Natural Woman” and then some. Also loved the extra treat of Carole singing several songs a cappella on the audiobook. 🙌🏻

#LetsTravel #concert

The very first concert that I paid for was Carol King & James Taylor in Hartford Bushnell theatre in 1971. I was blown away by their music, harmony, camaraderie, & joy as they performed.

(Day 5 - #SoFarAway)

*Sorry, I tried, but I just can‘t get this image out of my mind. Apologies to David Guetta & Martin Garrix, but theirs is not the first song with that title that comes to my mind.

Leftcoastzen I agree ❤️ 6y
Melissa_J The only song with this title I‘m familiar with is the Staind version. 6y
Reviewsbylola This is the one I think of too. ♥️ Carole King. 6y

gradcat @Leftcoastzen @Reviewsbylola Does this bring back memories for you guys? I‘m old enough that I was a teenager when it was first issued, and I know every word of every song! 6y
gradcat @Melissa_J I know that one, too, but Carole King‘s Tapestry is just iconic, imho.... 6y
Melissa_J Is it bad that I just had to go to YouTube to hear the King version? I had no idea what the song was until I heard it 😬 6y
Samplergal @gradcat One of my first albums. ❤️❤️❤️ 6y

gradcat @Samplergal & @CarolynM & @Reviewsbylola Thanks for your comments...I love reading everyone‘s thoughts. It was one of my first albums, too. I‘m always impressed when younger folks listen to music that is decades older than they are. 6y

Okay...odd logic, but here we go. #OmarSharif was in Funny Girl, the musical about Vaudeville star Fanny Brice. Thinking of stage performance and singing, this brought me to Carole King and her memoir.

Thanks to @Cinfhen and @vivastory for a fun #MusicalNewYear !

Cinfhen I saw the musical Beautiful this summer on Broadway which is the Carole King story!!! It was fabulous and the music was incredible ❣️🎭🎼Thanks for joining us 💞 6y

Bailedbailed

I‘m about 100 pages in and this is sooooo vanilla. Perhaps it‘s the tell vs show of the writing or just the white washed telling (it feels super PollyAnna) but I‘m just not all that compelled. Since it‘s a nearly 500 page book, I‘m just pulling the plug and moving on.

cocomass Good for you! There are too many books to read to power through another 400 pages 👏🏽 6y

Carole King: It‘s a song about wondering what we can do when we see injustice, and it expresses my long held belief that we–all of us humans–are most effective when we come together as “One” and stand up for our values such as dignity, inclusivity, equality of opportunity, and caring for our most vulnerable neighbors. . . I was inspired to write some new lyrics for the last chorus to reflect my feelings about the 2018 election.#love #gratitude30

Mehso-so

Let me begin by saying that I am fan of much of Carole King‘s music and would love to see the Broadway musical about her early life. However, I just didn‘t love this memoir. Her writing isn‘t bad, but I felt she included quite a bit of uninteresting information. I told my husband that it felt like the memoir that never ends. Also, this sounds awful, but it felt like she did a lot of name dropping. Maybe that is just how it came across on audio.

Bookzombie #nonfictionchallenge2018 - Examples of uninteresting things: lengthy description of mixing boards, how records are produced (not the music, but the vinyl itself), and possibly too much detail about the issue with the road on her land in Idaho. 6y
Crazeedi Maybe she should just stick to writing and singing great tunes! 😉 6y
Bookzombie @Crazeedi Maybe! 🙂 6y

I had the absolute joy of seeing this show last night. It was amazing and the way the staged it was glorious. Such a beautiful story and it was very interesting to see the early song catalogue of King. If you have a chance, go see this show.

DivaDiane I would so love to! Love Carole King and her music. 🎶 🎼 (edited) 7y
TsundokuAleax @DivaDiane Then you would totally love this show. It focuses on her early career through writing Tapestry. I fell in love with the show and did not realize how much of her music I did know. 7y

One more somewhat #bookishtravel memory from last weekend in NYC, as the musical is based on this memoir. Such a great show, so well done, and I had no idea how many early hits she had for other performers. Highly recommend the show and now I must read the book!

Tjackson I have seen it twice! I love the show. 7y

Not book related...
When my grandmother passed earlier this year, I brought home her record player. Since then I've been keeping my eyes open at the Sal Val and Goodwill for old records in decent condition. I scored this week.... so I hooked it all up and played it for the first time at my house. Carole King's Tapestry was the first record it played in its new house. I can't believe I found this record for 0.99 & that it all works!

TrishB Lovely story 👍 7y
RanaElizabeth Tapestry is a gorgeous album! 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @TrishB Thank you, its seemed like a great memory worth sharing even if it wasn't book related. 7y
