The Grey Wolf
The Grey Wolf: Chief Inspector Gamache faces his most deadly case yet in this unforgettable and timely thriller | Louise Penny
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Qubec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sret, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning. That's only the first in a sequence of strange events that begin THE GREY WOLF. A missing coat, an intruder alarm, a note for Gamache reading "this might interest you", a puzzling scrap of paper with a mysterious list - and then a murder. All propel Chief Inspector Gamache and his team toward a terrible realization. Something much more sinister than any one murder or any one case is fast approaching. Armand Gamache, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, his son-in-law and second in command, and Inspector Isabelle Lacoste can only trust each other, as old friends begin to act like enemies, and long-time enemies appear to be friends. Determined to track down the threat before it becomes a reality, their pursuit takes them across Qubec and across borders. If they fail the devastating consequences would reach into the largest of cities and the smallest of villages. PRAISE FOR LOUISE PENNY AND THE CHIEF INSPECTOR GAMACHE SERIES: 'Electrifying drama ... Finished at 12:05am so crossover between last book of 2024/first book 2025. I enjoyed it! As a Canadian, I loved all the references to our government and found the threat they are trying to neutralize to be truly scary. I enjoyed the fast pace and location hopping. My only note is that this book draws heavy references from an earlier book in the series, and I feel like the experience may have been richer if I had reread that one first.

Bookwormjillk I stopped in the middle of this one and re-read A Beautiful Mystery before I finished. 2w

Mehso-so

It may have been my mood or timing- I was sick.I listened to this in mid Dec.,finishing it on the day before Xmas. But for the first time in the series, the book felt like a So-So. it was generally about who can you trust, things are not what they seem, terrorism. The plot was convoluted, meandering, drawn out.It ended with a cliffhanger. Maybe the next book will make me feel differently- of course I‘ll read it. The new narrator was great though.

TheSpineView Great job for pushing through! 3w
Amiable Well, that's disappointing. 😬 3w

Seabreeze_Reader @kspenmoll I don't think you are the only one who has that opinion. Several of my reader friends had a very similar reaction to this book. It was the first book in the series they were disappointed in. 3w

It was just a pick. I read a review on Goodreads that said this series has lost its charm, and I think that‘s a pretty spot on analysis. While I appreciated the humour in this one, I did not appreciate the repetition and the long and weak drawn out plot. 😕

I love Inspector Gamache and am here for every book with Pom-poms waving. However, this will not be for everyone.

kspenmoll I have not read it yet. Thinking I might want to listen to it on audio. Thoughts? Intrigued by your comment that it is not a book for everyone? I have read all her books, so of course I will tackle this. 1mo
Shemac77 I am a die hard Three Pines fan. This is a little different than most of the series in that it centers pretty much outside of three pines. And Louise penny has done this before and fans weren‘t really impressed by it but I thought it weaved really well. I read it while on a recumbent bike at the gym and I was completely engaged. @kspenmoll 1mo
kspenmoll @Shemac77 Thanks for explanation! I will follow Gamache whetever he goes! Has she ever been to Nova Scotia? 1mo

This was close to being a “so-so“. The plot was convoluted and barely plausible, and I would have liked to spend more time in Three Pines, but it was still a page-turner with a big finish.

I also liked the new French Canadian audiobook narrator. The previous narrators were great (arguably better) but the mispronounced words made me cringe.

I started the latest book in one of my favourite series. The Inspector Gamache series is set in a fictional town but the general area is close to where I grew up and not far from an excellent Quebec brewery, Unibroue.

kwmg40 There has been some controversy over Louise Penny's choice of French-Canadian narrator Jean Brassard. The previous narrators, Ralph Cosham and Robert Bathurst, were excellent but I used to cringe at the pronunciations of Canadian names and phrases. For example: saying “toque“ like “toke“ and “Rocket Richard“ with the English pronunciation of Richard! 2mo

Finally finished an absolutely all consuming work project that‘s consumed my life for the better part of the last 6-8 months. I have saved my new Louise Penny to settle down with, calm my mind, cozy up to and enjoy as we barrel into the last month of 2024 😮

The story lines in these later books are kind of off the wall, but I still love every minute of them. This one didn‘t have as much Three Pines action as I like, but I did love revisiting some of the monks from A Beautiful Mystery. Sounds like a new one is already in the works.🌲🌲🌲

Mshookquilts I can‘t wait to read this one! 2mo

A solid mystery and characters we already love. Not her best, and a cliffhanger ending which was a bit frustrating. But still a solid Gamache story.

I‘ll never grow tired of Three Pines. Not my favorite in the series, but still good. This one focused on domestic terrorism and monks. I always wish for more time in the village for the books that include a lot of travel. I love the way Gamache‘s mind works. I loved learning more about the history of his relationship with his son.

Kimzey I received my pre-ordered copy. Looking forward to reading it! 2mo

I always love re-visiting this series. This one was focused on domestic terrorism and how Gamache and his team can stop them. I feel like I‘m visiting with friends when I read these books. Can‘t wait for the next one.

I finished in two nights. Now I have to wait until 2025 for the next one! Spending time in Three Pines is calming, which I needed. More under spoiler tag to protect the innocent. 😀

Lcsmcat It was clear Penny was worrying about our election. Good to see Gamache bring down corrupt politicians, but I hope she didn‘t give Vance any ideas. 2mo

I was just going to my local indie bookstore to order some Christmas gifts and gossip with the bookseller about some drama with another store in the shopping center… Then I saw the new Louise Penny book sitting on top of a box. I mentioned I was already stalking Libby to see where I was on the hold list, but she made another suggestion. It was “damaged” (a tiny tear in the dust cover), so she sold it to me at a discount. Look at these end papers!

MyNamesParadise @kspenmoll a friend that I met earlier this year actually told me I needed to read Louise Penny and she finally got me into audiobooks on the Libby app so I‘ve been listening to them since like June (with some other books mixed in) and I know I still have half the series to go! I‘m excited!! 3mo
kspenmoll @MyNamesParadise The current narrator of the audio books, Jean Brassand also spoke of how he felt the need to honor the past 2 narrators- he was lovely. I really needed this joyful boost tonight- ! 3mo
MyNamesParadise @kspenmoll oh cool!! I‘m still on the ones that Ralph Cosham narrated but I think I heard that he only did through book 10. I could be wrong though! I didn‘t realize there were a total of 3 narrators! 3mo

Having caught up on the remaining books in the series it was time to read the digital ARC (thank you Edelweiss+) of this one. The plot in this book takes us back to the monastery from “The Beautiful Mystery“, to Grenoble France where they make Chartreuse liqueur and to northern Quebec. While I would have loved to spend even more time in Three Pines, I thoroughly enjoyed the action in this one and liked that included more of Amelia Choquet. 4.5/5!

Mshookquilts So jealous! 9mo
Mpcacher @Mshookquilts I was very surprised to be offered it and was not going to pass it up. The only downside is now I have to wait so vey long for the next one. 9mo
