Mehso-so

Mediocre, predictable detective novel about three PIs with unexplained vast wealth. One is a heroin addict who largely escapes the typical consequences of that problem because he is extremely rich. I did like how, unlike most detective novels, this story has the PIs working several cases at once, but that is about all I liked.

Listened to the audiobook on Libby. It was okay. The hook was the private investigators all have surnames associated with fictional characters. This book seemed more like short stories knit together. It was also quite complicated to listen to. I really wanted to love it but it‘s a so-so 💚🐉

rubyslippersreads As a Margaret, I like the typo on the audiobook cover. 🤣 7mo

I like a good James Patterson when I want a light mystery to read. These three new detectives may be a good start to a good series from him. They aren‘t Alex Cross but they have background stories that made this book enjoyable to read…did they solve 4 mysteries that quick? I don‘t care, I liked it.🥸

#bakerstreetirregulars this is the mural mentioned when they ended up in Asbury Park chasing that motorcycle. The murals at the boardwalk in Asbury Park are stunning, a way to cover up the fact that they are still trying to bring back the beauty of the buildings, it‘s taking a little longer than they hoped, I think. They made huge improvements, but they had a huge project ahead of them!

#BakerStreetIrregulars Our March read was the new book by James Patterson and Brian Sitts, a fast paced detective story that paid tribute to three famous literary characters, Sherlock Holmes, Miss Marple, and Poe‘s early detective Auguste Dupin. While the short chapters and quick dialogue made for an entertaining read, we felt that these authors may have tried to fit more into this book than they should have. There was…a lot going on. ⬇️

StayCurious Do you feel they would have been better served focusing more on one main case or did you appreciate each character having their own focus? Did you appreciate the homage paid to these literary juggernauts or do you think the book relied too heavily on their familiarity to pull in readers? 9mo
StayCurious Which detective was your favourite?

Did you like the fast pace of the book and the quick, short chapters? Or did it give you whiplash?
9mo

BarkingMadRead I enjoyed this book! I liked the homage for sure, Marple was my fave. The short chapters could downtimes be too short, but I didn‘t mind too much! They maybe could have had less cases, but I‘m guessing that‘s what life as a PI is like. I‘m posting a pic of the mural they saw in Asbury Park, it‘s one of my fave places to visit. I miss it, we‘ve been in SC for 8 years, and I miss the smell of the ocean! 9mo
dabbe Overall, I enjoyed the fast pace of this mystery read. I found I wanted to learn more about the 3 PIs and their supposedly lurid past. This definitely has SERIES written all over it. A more engrossing read on perhaps one intense case that could have offshoots or red herrings would have appealed to me more. The character of Poe is least like his true namesake IMHO. 9mo
DGRachel As a general rule, I‘m a fan of short chapters, they make it easier for me to convince myself to read one more chapter at bedtime and end up reading a lot more. 😂 That said, the 1/3 of the book I read felt all over the place, like the authors just tried to do too much and ended up doing none of it well. 9mo
LiseWorks This is James Patterson's style with the short chapters so I'm used to it. There was a lot going on. I loved Holmes the best. 9mo
Read4life I enjoyed this one. I liked the short chapters and felt like the offshoots were to establish the strengths and demons of the three main characters. Holmes was my favorite but I liked the dynamic these three have. 9mo
TheAromaofBooks I overall did like this one. Like @DGRachel I usually like short chapters, but here we were bouncing around so much that it sometimes felt chaotic and whiplash-y. If this ends up being the first book in a series, I think I'll like it more, if that makes sense haha A lot of this felt kind of like “we're introducing a bunch of characters who will be more developed later on“. Still, it was a fun read and the first time I've read James Patterson!! 9mo

#unpopularopinion I do not care for the writing at all. It‘s tedious and I am not connecting with any of the characters. I should want their backstories, I should care about the solutions to the various cases, but I don‘t. The prose is just not engaging. It could be my current headspace or the fact that I‘m not a big Patterson fan 🤷🏻‍♀️. #bakerstreetirregulars

rubyslippersreads I‘m not a Patterson fan either. The title is great, though. 9mo

I haven't read Patterson in a while, and this was rollicking fun. The fast-paced and clipped chapters kept me turning the page just as I kept reaching for one more potato chip from my bowl. Even though the three PIs exhibit similar traits to the classic originals (Poe actually being real), I was most drawn to the fourth character, NYPD detective Helene Grey, who is a force in her own right. I see a sequel in the future.

A soft pick for the first #BakerStreetIrregulars buddy read. I liked the concept and the characters, but the pacing was all over the place. This definitely had “first book in a series“ vibes (hopefully it is!!), with a lot of character introductions. So many different mysteries meant that some things felt glossed over in the end. However, all in all a fun read, and I would definitely pick up a sequel.

dabbe I'm halfway through and agree with you 💯! 9mo

This month the #BakerStreetIrregulars read is a fast paced modern mystery story with characters that pay homage to some of the greats. As we reach the month‘s halfway point I thought we could share a bit about who these three namesake detectives are. Most of us are familiar with Sherlock Holmes. Created by Arthur Conan Doyle and first appearing in A Study in Scarlet in 1887,he is arguably one of the most famous literary detectives and characters⬇️

StayCurious Sherlock is brilliant and unlikeable but the public loved him so much that they threw a fit when Conan Doyle wanted to kill him off! Share fun tidbits about Sherlock if you have them. 9mo
StayCurious Miss Marple is a character created by Agatha Christie and first appearing in 1927. She has been portrayed by several great ladies on screen and is an amateur detective. (edited) 9mo
StayCurious Poe wrote what is widely considered to be the first fictional detective story in 1841 with The Murders in the Rue Morgue, introducing his character Auguste. 9mo
See All 12 Comments
StayCurious For those of you familiar with these characters, have our authors paid proper tribute to them in this new book? From what you‘ve read so far? (edited) 9mo
LiseWorks I personally am not too familiar with Miss Marple as I never read any Agatha Christie novels. But I loved Holmes, and Poe depicted in the novel. 9mo
DGRachel My library hold is definitely not going to come in on time. Thanks for the reminder of the discussion date. 9mo
BarkingMadRead I‘m loving the characters and their different strength and weaknesses, it was definitely a fun and fast paced read 9mo
julieclair Hoping my library hold comes in… but it‘s not looking good. 😕 9mo
TheAromaofBooks Marple is the weakest of the connections, I feel like. Here, she doesn't really make the random connections that the original does (“oh you know there was a time that the grocer's daughter was walking out with the butcher's boy but we all knew what was really happening“ and then it somehow connects to a diamond necklace being stolen haha). She's a lovely character, but she didn't seem Marple-like to me at all. 9mo
CatLass007 The Edgars (SM), officially known as the Edgar Allan Poe Awards (SM), are presented annually by the Mystery Writers of America. The Edgars are considered the most prestigious awards specifically for mystery fiction, non-fiction, and film. 9mo
CatLass007 @TheAromaofBooks I thought Marple was the most intriguing of the three. How did this sweet, Agatha Christie loving woman become the woman she is in this book. How did she have the skill and ability to find the judge‘s daughter and why does she have such unusual connections to others? 9mo

This was a hot mess y'all. It was entertaining but it veered too far into the ridiculous for me. There were several mysteries, which we saw varying degrees of them working and clues which occasionally turned up like magic. I wanted more on their backgrounds, which we deliberately didn't get. I assume this is to draw readers to another book but I don't wanna. It's such a good premise that I'm extra disappointed it didn't turn out better.

Another mystery thriller by James Patterson but this one has a literary theme. The future offspring of Sherlock Holmes, Miss Marple, and Edgar Allen Poe form the most sought-after private investigation agency in New York City. Together they tackle a high-stakes art heist, a kidnapping case, a decade old unsolved murder, an underground prison, along with corruption and bribery at the highest levels of power. ⬇️

suvata I enjoy Patterson‘s novels, but, face it, he is very prolific, and thus far I have only faithfully followed the Alex Cross series. If Holmes, Marple, and Poe becomes a series, I would be thrilled. I loved all the literary references in this book. And, who would you call if you had an unsolved case? I cannot think of none better than this trio.
