The Aftermath
The Aftermath | Rhidian Brook
1946, post-World War II Hamburg. While thousands wander the rubble, lost and homeless, Colonel Lewis Morgan, charged with overseeing the rebuilding of this devastated city and the denazification of its defeated people, is stationed in a grand house on the River Elbe. He is awaiting the arrival of his wife, Rachaelstill grieving for their eldest sonand their only surviving son, Edmund. But rather than force the owners of the house, a German widower and his rebellious daughter, out onto the streets, Lewis insists that the two families live together. In this charged atmosphere, both parents and children will be forced to confront their true selves as enmity and grief give way to passion and betrayal, to their deepest desires, their fiercest loyalties, and the transforming power of forgiveness. This courageous new novel from award-winning author Rhidian Brook tells an emotionally riveting story of two families, one house, and love grown from hate. This ebook edition includes a Reading Group Guide.

This was another one from the bottom of my TBR list, and it was a good read. It takes place in Germany just after WWII, and is understandably grim. It was very interesting though to examine each person‘s reactions to the terrible conditions and to imagine how I would have fared. A good book to read on a cold, dark January day.

This was a so-so for me almost a pan. I just did not connect with any of the characters except one (and he unfortunately didn‘t have a happy ending). The only thing that saved this from being a pan was the descriptions of Hamburg. #Rhidianread

Finished...and I‘m left with a lot of unanswered questions. It seems like the ending came too rushed; I was hoping for more. A unique look at World War II‘s aftermath in Germany, from various perspectives. But, still lacking in something. A few weeks late, but finally completed #RhidianRead ! #Deweys24HourReadathon

#RhidianRead #buddyread
The author‘s inspiration for the novel is his grandfather who requisitioned a house for his family in 1946 Hamburg. In a unique move,he allowed the German owners‘ to remain & share the house. The novel‘s intrigue, it‘s vivid, sensory, details of ruins juxtaposed with splendor, it‘s tensions between the “occupiers”& those who lost, are palpable. The culture of the orphaned “children of rubble”is heartbreaking in it‘s detail.

I know it‘s an odd post but I can‘t be the only 1 who googles when reading. I came across “paternoster” in my reading & had to find out what it was. Looks dangerous!

This is my #rhidianread check in. Just finished chapter 6. I really enjoy how it goes back & forth showing the various perspectives: the English, the Germans, the wives, the soldiers, the children.
I will say I read 1 very negative review that said this book is full of sex. Where?

Crazeedi I just started chapter 5, liking the book so far! Sex you say? Not in my copy, so far anyway😉 6y
Librarybelle Interesting...thanks for sharing information on the paternoster! 6y
megnews @Crazeedi I‘ve come across some but the review made it out that it was erotic literature or something! Wondering if they reviewed the wrong book?? 6y

KarenUK I used to work in Paternoster Square in London .... which is tucked behind St. Paul‘s Cathedral.... (and I had no idea what a Paternoster was until now!) 6y
megnews @KarenUK that‘s so funny! Wonder why it was named that? Wonder if the Paternoster is named after its inventor? Now I‘ve gotta go do more research. 6y
Soubhiville Wow that‘s kind of crazy! 6y
megnews @KarenUK from Wikipedia: The name paternoster ("Our Father", the first two words of the Lord's Prayer in Latin), was originally applied to the device because the elevator is in the form of a loop and is thus similar to rosary beads used as an aid in reciting prayers [need to brush up on my Latin. Lol] 6y

3.5⭐️
Would have been a 4 but the abrupt ending left me unsatisfied.
Interesting post-war history I knew little about, with characters I really felt for. But something was just off with the pacing. This is something I‘ve not said before, but after seeing the trailer, I think this may make a better movie than book. Which could be because the author also writes so often for the screen. I guess I‘ll find out in a couple of weeks... 🤷‍♀️
#rhidianread

Tamra Yes, would be an interesting movie with a different ending. I agree, one of my criticisms is with how it suddenly just simply ended. The End........🤔 (edited) 6y
CouronneDhiver Ooo - can‘t wait to see how this goes. I still don‘t have my copy yet (ordered from Chapters a couple weeks ago). 🤞🏽 6y

#rhidianread As a monogamous print reader I really appreciate the read at your pace buddyreads! I finished this last night and I am conflicted about it, but I don‘t want to give anything away. The premise is unique - I loved the idea of post-war traumatized families from opposite sides living together under the same roof. There was some brutal honesty too that was appealing. Definitely see this as a possible film.

@CouronneDhiver @Librarybelle

Tamra Thank you @CouronneDhiver for the correction! 6y

I started reading (listening to) The Aftermath last night and I have a question for @CouronneDhiver @Librarybelle and any one else doing the #RhidianRead who has a physical copy of the book: Are there actual chapters? According to Scribd, I‘m about to start Chapter 8 and there are 92 chapters but the narrator hasn‘t announced a chapter number yet. I‘m so confused right now lol

Librarybelle Yes - at least in my addition there are chapters! I have a physical copy. That‘s bizarre! 6y
Shibbyfruitfly @Librarybelle How many chapters are in the book? I‘m now wondering if the audio is just counting page breaks because 92 seems like a lot 6y
Librarybelle I‘ll take a look when I get home. The chapter divide out is different this time, because the middle chapters are really long. That could be why the chapter breaks are set up differently in your version. 6y
See All 7 Comments
CouronneDhiver Weird! I sure hope that‘s just an anomaly. I would hate to bring on a bail-a-thon! 6y
Shibbyfruitfly Thanks @Librarybelle I think that‘ll help me figure it out. @CouronneDhiver I tend to get ahead of the readings when I listen to the audio version so I will definitely not be bailing. It‘s really confusing though lol 6y
Librarybelle My copy has 15 chapters plus an epilogue. I‘m not sure what the best way would be to sync these up - looking at the last sentence of each section, maybe? 6y
Shibbyfruitfly Thanks @Librarybelle I‘m only about 30 minutes in and already on “Chapter 8” so I‘m hoping as I listen a little more I finally hear Chapter 2 at some point. 6y

Just found this whilst working an overnight at work (B&N).... I‘ve been dying to read this before I see the Keira Knightly movie coming out in March... It looks so good....
With my employee discount this was $4!
