From the bestselling author of Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk comes a novel about Hollywood, the cost of stardom, and selfless second acts, inspired by an extraordinary true story. Chicago, 1916. Doreen O'Dare is fourteen years old when she hops a Hollywood-bound train with her beloved Irish grandmother. Within a decade, her trademark bob and insouciant charm make her the preeminent movie flapper of the Jazz Age. But her success story masks one of relentless ambition, tragedy, and the secrets of a dangerous marriage. Her professional life in flux, Doreen trades one dream for another. She pours her wealth and creative energy into a singular achievement: the construction of a one-ton miniature Fairy Castle, the likes of which the world has never seen. So begins Doreen's public tour to lift the nation's spirits during the Great Depression--and a personal journey worth remembering. A sweeping journey from the dawn of the motion picture era through turbulent twentieth-century America, From Dust to Stardust is a breathtaking novel about one determined woman navigating change, challenging the price of fame, and sharing the gift of real magic.

Thank you, @TheBookHippie for choosing this one. A book I wouldn‘t have picked up on my own but one I‘m happy I read. Reading with this group makes me happy.

A fictional story about Colleen Moore, an actress in the early 1900s, who sponsored an incredible fairy castle dollhouse at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. I saw this dollhouse on many trips to the museum, as every year there was a field trip from school, and my parents took us kids there at least a couple of times a year. I loved it and probably still would if I got there again. Maybe it would still make me feel like a princess! ⬇️

Lesliereadsalot The story itself is a typical rags to riches, with the necessary drunk husband and oblivious studio heads. Lots of name dropping. A soft pick, but brought back lots of memories. 4d
BarbaraBB I just read a book about a dollhouse too, one that I often saw as a child when visiting the museum it‘s in: 4d

#Read2025

Read for #SundayBuddyRead I‘m a classic movie & old Hollywood buff & so this novel based on a real-life actress & star of the silent screen (Colleen Moore) was right up my alley. I didn‘t know much about her as an actress or the castle dollhouse she built for charity that still sits in the Griffin Museum in Chicago. The book has lots of personal & relationship drama & Hollywood tea that kept me entertained. I would have loved more ⬇️

DebinHawaii …on her later relationships and life after acting, but all-in-all, it was a great escape read and pick for February. 5d

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this for the #SundayBuddyRead - I‘m a big fan of Old Hollywood but don‘t know as much about the silent era, so this opened up a whole new world for me. It‘s based on a real silent movie star (Colleen Moore) which makes it even better. Would love to go visit her fairy castle in Chicago one day. 4.5⭐️ Thanks for hosting @TheBookHippie ! 🤗

TorieStorieS The fairy castle has been my favorite part of the Museum of Science and Industry for my whole life! They used to have payphone style phones where you listened to the details, but now it plays in a less germy way hahaha! 2d
JenlovesJT47 @TorieStorieS I feel like a bad fan because I have never heard of this before reading this book! I love Old Hollywood but don‘t know as much about the silent era. This book was really good and I‘d highly recommend it if you haven‘t read it! Here‘s a book about the dollhouse https://annas-archive.org/md5/7f02c721d5baaae35b9f2655b6538a10 2d

TorieStorieS I listened to this one already, my book twin! But I grew up with this castle so I think I expected more magic!! 2d
JenlovesJT47 @TorieStorieS of course you did, book twin! 😆 There are a bunch of books about Colleen Moore and the doll house on Anna‘s Archive if you‘re interested ❤️ 1d
TorieStorieS Oooo— I‘m going to check them out now! I have my mom‘s original book on the castle from I think before I was born! I just have to find it… 1d

This might be a low pick for me but I think it's my general mood and not the book here. Getting a non blurry photo while standing on the T (subway train) was a struggle.

Mehso-so

#sundaybuddyread historical fiction about the early days of the movies transitioning to talkies, based on the life of Colleen Moore. I don‘t know why I couldn‘t get into this, I‘m not sure I‘d have finished it without the group. Maybe the movie theme again, maybe the waste and abuse of power? Right at the end the museum curator says she wants to show Doreen‘s movies in another exhibit as a tie in but most of them are gone. The type of film ⬇️

mcctrish used in the early days of silent film basically combusted. Even when people knew this nothing was done to transfer much of the early films in time. This seems like metaphor for the US itself, always onto the next thing, never being reflective, always reinvention, not preservation. 6d

A slow meander through a fictional look at the start of Hollywood, with a sprinkling of nostalgia for the silent film industry. Doreen O‘Dare is the fictionalized portrayal of Colleen Moore, a silent film actress and the creator of the Fairy Castle. Reading this book makes me want to watch silent films! A good choice for #SundayBuddyRead .

My #Chatterday Saturday started with errands & now I‘m at the coffeeshop to finish writing a manager coaching workshop I am delivering next week. My computer was having issues when I got here & I was hoping it was the universe telling me not to work & to read for #SundayBuddyRead instead, but alas I got it going & now I must focus on getting my work done & catch up with reading & Litsy later. 😬

Hope all your Saturdays/weekends are going well!💛

I am what you might consider "chronically online," I live in the US, and frankly, I'm losing my ?. I need to relax, so I'm going to do #hyggehourreadathon on Mountain Time instead of my usually Eastern time zone. I have a Balsam & Cedar candle burning to bring a little of the outside in, I have a sleepy puppy just settled in for a nap, and a #sundaybuddyread read book to get started on.
