Whispers Underground

This fast, engrossing novel is enjoyable, cheerful, and accessible to new readers. Publishers Weekly My name is Peter Grant, police officer, apprentice wizard and well dressed man about town. I work for ECD9, otherwise known as the Folly, and to the Murder Investigation Team as oh god not them again. But even their governor, the arch sceptic and professional northerner DCI Seawoll, knows that sometimes, when things go bump in the night, they have to call us in. Which was why I found myself in an underground station at five oclock, looking at the body of James Gallagher, US citizen and Arts Student. How did he avoid the undergrounds ubiquitous CCTV to reach his final destination, and why is the ceramic shard he was stabbed with so strongly magical? As the case took me into the labyrinth of conduits, tunnels and abandoned bomb shelters that lay beneath the streets I realised that London below might just be as complicated and inhabited as London above. And worse, James Gallaghers father is a US senator, so the next thing I know, Ive got Special Agent Kimberley Reynolds of the FBI liaising with the investigation and asking awkward questions. Such as just what are you guys hiding down here and how did you conjure that light out thin air? LOCUS AWARD FINALIST FOR BEST FANTASY NOVEL Reviews for Whispers Underground One of the most refreshing things about former Doctor Who writer Aaronvitchs Rivers of London series of magical procedurals is that they are blessedly free of manufactured rivalries.... This fast, engrossing novel is enjoyable, cheerful, and accessible to new readers. Publishers Weekly Ben Aaronovitch writes some of the funniest prose in current fantasy. These books are extremely entertaining, mainly because narrator Peter Grant has a hilarious voice and a sly sense of humor... quirkily effective prose and dry humor, making it a pure pleasure to read. Tor.com The prose is witty, the plot clever and the characters incredibly likeable... Time Out

I don't know if this change met with favour from other readers, but the fact that this book in the series dialed down the drama and interpersonal tension and went for more of an ensemble cast police procedural (with trademark fantastical elements, quality banter and gross moments, of course) really worked for me. Bonus points for Terry Pratchett references, I see now why the author ended up introducing an edition of Guards! Guards! 😉

More appropriately named than the last one in the series. SO many pop culture name drops compared to the other ones? But pretty good and fast, I finished it in three sittings. Now I have to wait at least a week for the next one to arrive.
A lot of threads left dangling though, I really hope Aaronowitch gets back some of them before the end of the series.

While I‘m still thoroughly enjoying this series, this third novel didn‘t grab me the way the previous ones did. It was still good, and I love the world and the banter (also, pretty sure I noticed a nod to the Dresden Files, which made me laugh), but it felt a little disjointed to me and the solving of the murder felt a little… abrupt?

I normally don‘t read repetitive detective fiction, but this is the exception I‘m on the third book of this series and love all the different ways in which paranormal activities provide another level of investigation. … plus it‘s hilarious 😆

For me, the best instalment in the series so far.
I loved the development and increased attention some of the secondary characters got and the addition to the more permanent roster of some very promising new ones.
Makes me very excited for the next book in the series.

I had the whole Saturday afternoon free to read, so of course I ended up painting this mural instead. 🙈😂🎨 I know it's not 100% accurate, but I had to draw the map by hand with only a reference on my phone, so I'm considering it a win. 🤷‍♀️

Again, I didn't like this one so much as the first one. But it was still pretty good. This one follows Peter Grant as he is attempting to solve a murder that brings him underground with a group of people called the Quiet People. The only thing I didn't really like about this book was the grammar. For example, he used "me and Abigail" as the subject not the direct object in which case it should always be "Abigail and I", never me. ???

Third in the rivers books, the series returns to form with a fantastic quick read, full of action and weird fable-esque goings on. Really enjoyed it- great world building, fantastic characters and gripping plot line I can‘t wait to read the next instalment. P.s is the last chapter title, morning crescent a subtle nod to BBC Radio 4s “I‘m sorry I haven‘t a clue?” Probably not but it made me chuckle all the same.

Book 3 - Finished Saturday morning on the train!

Enjoyed this one more than n2, almost as much as n1. Solid mystery + significant plot movement + lots of London underground history! I do so enjoy the nerdy geography/city stuff in these books (that's no surprise - I am a geographer!).

Still finding Nightingale tough to care about, hopefully he becomes more 3 dimensional as the series goes on.

I'm in love with these covers - I want prints!

Third in his Rivers of London series. I liked it a little less than the first two. I don't know if it's because the plot was all over the place with no real villain or if the pace was off. It just felt like it was slightly off course for a Peter Grant novel.
Second time around I liked it more. Insights of the next books makes it better. Also, i enjoyed the architecture bits so much this time. #booked2019 #POCparanormal #fall

This is the third book in the Peter Grant, Rivers of London series. It‘s an urban fantasy, where an ordinary constable turned magician‘s apprentice solves crimes across London. This instalment takes Peter down to the tunnels of London's Underground, the buried rivers, the Victorian sewers, and he‘s hearing whispers of tortured, vengeful spirits..
I have the first three books waiting for me.

12 hour work days suuuck.

A murder mystery and a secret hidden under the London Underground! I love how London itself is a character.

This story was much tighter. And I've got the pattern now for the two plots - 1 for the police procedural story and 1 for Faceless.

One of my fav things about this universe is that magic has serious consequences and limits. So we haven't magically cured Lesley.

And more Abigail please? Lots more. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗

This series of books is also throughly enjoyable. It‘s a perfect blend of Sherlock Homes and Harry Potter (as an adult) that makes me very happy. Highly recommend. I‘m on the 3rd one and plan to read them all straight through.

The Rivers of London series never fails to kick start my reading, even in my current rut. I want to read them all at once but I don‘t want them to run out... This one - the third in the series - focuses on the mysterious death of an American art student on the underground and takes PC Peter Grant into the tunnels and sewers. Not my favourite of the series so far but it comes with everything you expect - humour, fantasy and a love of London.

Maddyflake I‘m the same! I love the series so much. If I am in a reading rut, I always go for Peter Grant (or something Pratchett😜) and it always helps. Have read the series twice now and can‘t wait till the next one in November (only...nine months away😬)! 7y

I feel like Ben Aaronovitch‘s pacing has slowed a little bit with this third-in-series; but his humor, cleverness and plotting remain as strong as ever. In this story, PC Peter Grant is called to a scene wherein an American art student is found with a pottery shard in his back and the muck of the sewers on his boots... Audiobook narrator Kobna Holdbrook-Smith‘s characters are richer sounding and even better developed than before.
