The Burnout
The Burnout: A Novel | Sophie Kinsella
Sparks fly in this delightful novel about two burned out professionals who meet at a ramshackle resort on the British seasidefrom the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Party Crasher. She can do anything . . . just not everything. Sasha has had it. She cannot bring herself to respond to another inane, urgent (but obviously not at all urgent) email or participate in the corporate employee joyfulness program. She hasnt seen her friends in months. Sex? Seems like a lot of effort. Even cooking dinner takes far too much planning. Sasha has hit a wall. Armed with good intentions to drink kale smoothies, try yoga, and find peace, she heads to the seaside resort she loved as a child. But its the off season, the hotel is in a dilapidated shambles, and she has to share the beach with the only other occupant: a grumpy guy named Finn, who seems as stressed as Sasha. How can she commune with nature when hes sitting on her favorite rock, watching her? Nor can they agree on how best to alleviate their burnout (Sasha: manifesting, wild swimming; Finn: drinking whisky, getting pizza delivered to the beach). When curious messages, seemingly addressed to Sasha and Finn, begin to appear on the beach, the two are forced to talkabout everything. How did they get so burned out? Can either of them remember something they used to love? (Answer: surfing!) And the question they try and fail to ignore: what does the energy between themflaring even in the face of their bone-deep exhaustionsignify?

Sasha takes a break away from work and life in London. She returns to the seaside resort she loved as a child, determined to reset her batteries and find peace.
Only the hotel is now off season and crumbling to pieces. She has to share the beach and hotel with a grumpy man who has his own issues to deal with.
I felt the plot was quite static and not a lot happened. The characters were eccentric and the hotel couldn‘t function in real life. 3🌟

Weekend reading. I‘ve been a big fan of Sophie Kinsella so I‘m hoping this one is just as good as her other books. 📚💕

Wanted to love this more than I did. It was readable enough, the characters endearing enough, and the concept engaging enough. But it was also slow, and there was a bit too much going on. If Kinsella had stuck to the “burnout” concept, mined it a bit more deeply, and shaved 100 pages off this, it would have fired better for me.

If you, too, are suffering from burnout, reading this may not be the kind of catharsis you‘re looking for. I found it kind of stressful to read about a character experiencing *some* of the same feelings that I have been (though in a very dramatized way) — and knowing that everything‘s about to change…for her. However, despite requiring some suspension of disbelief, the story is grounded in sweetness & earnestness, & it had me laughing ALL the way.

monalyisha I think this was my first Sophie Kinsella! I‘ll definitely read more by her (though maybe not the Shopaholic series). Our sense of humor aligns in a big way. The scene where she tries to join a convent had me literally exclaiming aloud. 😅 4mo

Such a quick, easy read. It will make you laugh, smile, & maybe even cry. Full of feel good vibes & heart. Like relatable characters who come complete with messy stories, making them all the more relatable? You'll love Kinsella's writing. Love quirky characters who leave you waiting for the other shoe to drop? You'll enjoy Kinsella's writing. Just need an escape from your own day to day drama? You'll find it in Kinsella's writing.

This was my first Sophie Kinsella book, and I was surprised by how much I laughed out loud. From the quirky supporting cast to the outrageous scenarios, this really was a fun read. It was, however, grounded in serious moments too, like coping with job burnout, aging and dementia, etc. I really enjoyed it!

Man alive, did the early pages of this book ever send me spiralling back to a time when I wished I could have run away from my desk to literally run into a brick wall. Happily, that is just the opening pages. It's been ages since I read a Kinsella and this had me laughing right out loud and turning the pages far later into the nigh than I should have. What a hilarious group of supporting characters!

Charming, witty, and truly laugh-out-loud funny! This book is an exceptionally good time. And I highly recommend the audiobook on Spotify- the actress reading, Bessie Carter, is so animated with her fun voices.
For anyone who‘s ever wondered if they‘re “doing self-care right.” It gets taken to such an extreme in the story, but in a funny, relatable way. And the romance is really heartwarming 💕
A nice way to end the reading year!

This is quite entertaining romantic comedy that strikes a balance between laughter and heartfelt moments. There are some really good takeaways about priorities, boundaries & self-care. But overall, this was more like a one time read... It feels like I've outgrown Sophie Kinsella which I'm totally bummed about...

I wanted very slightly more out of the final misunderstanding, but GOD did this book have my whole heart otherwise. Sasha and Finn were so real, and their struggles with burnout were a little TOO relatable. And the whole Rilston crew! I will never stop laughing! #romcom #contemporaryromance

I think I‘ve read all of Sophie Kinsella‘s stand-alone books, and several of the shopaholic series. I enjoyed this one, which has a little depth to go with the rom-com. It would be a fun book to read in January because there‘s a “new year, new you” theme.

“I‘ll drop anything for a new Sophie Kinsella. The Burnout is hilarious, sparky and joyful—just the book you need if you‘re desperate for a break. I loved seeing Sasha coming back to herself on the windswept beach at Rilston!”

I‘ve liked Kinsella‘s other books, but this one isn‘t working for me. Could just be the timing, but it‘s coming across as silly, so back to the library it goes!

I'm only halfway through but am really loving this one so far. There's a certain wackiness in Kinsella's stories that doesn't always land for me, but coming off a job where I experienced *intense* burnout, I'm feeling our MC in my very soul. I'm a few months into a new gig that feels more balanced at this point, but there's still a deep part of me that needs to go stare at the sea for three weeks as Sasha and Finn do. I'm sure many can relate!

This was so good! I haven‘t read much by Kinsella and I‘m going to have to remedy that. This was charming, thoughtful, and laugh out loud funny. A woman suffering from major burnout struggles to put her life back together after blowing it up. A return to a beloved childhood vacation spot, a rundown hotel with a quirky staff, unsuccessful self help strategies and a hot stranger encourage her to see her life in a new light. So good! #BookspinBingo

This book is laugh out loud funny, filled with plenty of heart, &wholly relatable.

Sasha‘s toxic workplace causes her mental health to take a turn, so she goes out on some R&R. She chooses to go to Rilston, a small town full of nostalgia from her childhood summers &new friendships in the form of Finn, another guest staying there for burnout, &the hotel staff who were quirky and caring. Slowly she heals, but not w/out some mishaps along the way.

I always enjoy Sophie Kinsella‘s books, some more than others. While this one is not top of my Kinsella list, it‘s (as all of her offerings are) filled with humor, wonderfully-drawn characters, a compelling storyline and just an overall feel-good vibe. Sasha is overworked, underappreciated and frustrated with her job as Director of Special Promotions at Zoose…too many inane “urgent” emails, a corporate employee joyfulness program that she has no🔻

robinb time to be “joyful” about and the helpless feeling when no one listens to her advice/concerns. When she flips out and literally runs away from work, her mother books her into a hotel at the seaside vacation spot that she grew up visiting for many summers as a child with her family. She has not been there since her father‘s passing 20 years ago and finds the Rilston Bay Hotel anything but the elegant, upper crust enclave that she remembers.🔻 (edited) 1y
robinb She meets a menagerie of HILARIOUS employees there (simply divine characters who need their own book!) and begins a healing, self-discovery sojourn. Finn, a grumpy but attractive fellow hotel guest, is also suffering job burnout, and they slowly begin to aid each other on their journeys back to enjoying life. They discover a shared love of surfing and reconnect with their surfing instructor Terry, a wise and wonderful fixture 🔻 (edited) 1y
robinb from their youth. I loved this slow-burn romance and not just for the romance. It had a lot to say about the hecticness of everyday modern life and the need to reconnect with one‘s self for mental/physical wellbeing. Recommended. 4.25/5⭐️ (edited) 1y
CarolynM Lovely review. I‘m a Sophie Kinsella fan too. I‘ll look out for this one. 1y
robinb @CarolynM thanks Carolyn. 😊 I may have overstated my case as I‘m not a true connoisseur of everything Kinsella (I‘ve read 4-5 of her books), but they have been consistently wonderful, and I guess I‘d be surprised if I ran across one that wasn‘t…and disappointed. 1y
