Tailor of Gloucester (Anniversary)
Tailor of Gloucester (Anniversary) | Beatrix Potter
12 posts | 19 read | 1 to read
The Tailor of Gloucester was first published in 1903 and tells the story of a poor tailor trying to survive in his freezing workshop over a hard winter. He has a terribly important commission to complete for the Mayor of Gloucester's wedding on Christmas Day but is ill and tired, and before long is running out of food and thread, as well as time! How will he possibly complete the beautiful coat and embroidered waistcoat? Luckily, there lives in the dresser, some very kind and very resourceful mice who set about helping the poor tailor with his work. Not only are they exceedingly helpful, but they are also, luckily, far far too clever for the tailor's sly cat, Simpkin. The Tailor of Gloucester is number three in Beatrix Potter's series of 23 little books, the titles of which are as follows: 1 The Tale of Peter Rabbit 2 The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin 3 The Tailor of Gloucester 4 The Tale of Benjamin Bunny 5 The Tale of Two Bad Mice 6 The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle 7 The Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher 8 The Tale of Tom Kitten 9 The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck 10 The Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies 11 The Tale of Mrs. Tittlemouse 12 The Tale of Timmy Tiptoes 13 The Tale of Johnny Town-Mouse 14 The Tale of Mr. Tod 15 The Tale of Pigling Bland 16 The Tale of Samuel Whiskers 17 The Tale of The Pie and the Patty-Pan 18 The Tale of Ginger and Pickles 19 The Tale of Little Pig Robinson 20 The Story of a Fierce Bad Rabbit 21 The Story of Miss Moppet 22 Appley Dapply's Nursery Rhymes 23 Cecily Parsley's Nursery Rhymes

I‘m glad I finally read this Christmas classic since Beatrix Potter often said it was her personal favorite! It sort of reminds me of the Elves and the Shoemaker which I did grow up reading around this time of year, but I‘m charmed that it‘s based on an actual piece of local history and has no relation to the Grimm story.

Heartwarming tale, I could see it becoming a Christmas tradition to read, on the Eve or the morning of. Exquisite illustrations as always. But alarming to realize that central message, aside from kindness and reciprocity, is the wealth gap. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/2One poor, overworked tailor, in substandard living conditions, who is obviously knowledgeable and skilled in his trade, who barely has the funds for all the luxe materials his wealthy client wants made up into garments, who will eat the cost of he doesn't finish in time, even if he is ill, because of course, no sick leave, no health insurance, and will starve if he doesn't manage this commission. This is why we unionize! 1y

Lynnsoprano A nice day for me. A good walk this morning, and then out to get a new phone this afternoon. It felt strange to go inside a store, which fortunately was not busy. Best of all, hubby is cooking dinner, so I have more reading time. 4y
TheSpineView Busy at work today. Though no crisis or anything, just normal busy. So a good day so far. Hubby is feeling a little better. He is still itchy but the redness is starting to go away. All in all, I can't complain. 4y
CocoReads Better day, not too busy at work and the weather is perfect! 4y
TheBookHippie Well we had chainsaws and cut up all the fallen trees and limbs. Firewood for a few years worth 😩😳 Such is life. We‘re all safe the trees did no damage and health remains so 🤷🏽‍♀️ steady supply of liquorice may necessary for the rest of my days 4y
kezzlou85 Hubby decided to give up the fish tank so spent the afternoon trying to catch the fish so we could take them to the shop. With a poorly dog we need to concentrate on him. 4y
BookwormM First full day in office done it was nice to be out of the house and speak to people. 4y
TrishB Busy day, still trying hard to plan for next year! 4y
Andrew65 Good to see that we haven‘t only visited Gloucester but caught up with a couple of Litten friends @TheEllieMo @kathedron 4y
Andrew65 @Lynnsoprano A great day! 4y
Andrew65 @TheSpineView Good to hear your husband is improving. 4y
Andrew65 @CocoReads Overcast, windy and rainy here. 4y
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie Pleased to hear you are the other side of things. Never have too little licorice. 4y
Andrew65 @kezzlou85 Sending best wishes. 4y
Andrew65 @BookwormM That‘s great. 4y
Andrew65 @TrishB Good luck with the planning. 4y
Velvetfur Wow that's some gorgeous buildings in Gloucester! Thanks for the pics Andrew 👍🏻 Today I discovered a new perimenopause symptom - burning tongue/mouth/throat! Started this morning, I found out what it was soon after, and it's been like that all day. Nothing I've eaten or drank has made it any better. My throat is burning, it's horrible 🙁 4y
CarolynM @Velvetfur That happened to me too! It's horrible! I'm glad to say it only lasted for a couple of weeks I'm praying it doesn't return. Hope yours goes away quickly too. 4y
CarolynM Gloucester is obviously another place to add to my to visit list. These photos are fabulous! 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Fabulous photos! My day was ok. I took the morning off to get errands done but then had a Teams meeting about the new corporate structure. Sounds like I'll be experiencing some functional changes and challenges as we break away from the Franchising half of the brand. Ugh. 😩 The tropical storm breezed through. My building is fine but lots of limbs fell off the trees in the park behind us. Otherwise life here is fine. 4y
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I wondered if you‘d see some weather by you. Glad it‘s okay 4y
TheBookHippie @Velvetfur Memories 😭😭😭😭 when I switched to the estrogen patch it went mostly away. It did get exacerbated by stress unfortunately . I have not had it happen in a long while now but I remember how awful especially the lips burning part. Lots of lemon Italian ice was eaten 4y
TheBookHippie @CarolynM Me too burning lips about 18 months off and on 😭😬 4y
Velvetfur @CarolynM Thank you for sharing! I'm glad to hear it goes away eventually, so maybe I'll get used to it (it's happening again this morning). I hope yours doesn't come back too 💜 4y
Velvetfur @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I'm glad to hear you're ok after the storm xxx 4y
Velvetfur @TheBookHippie Thank you for sharing! I haven't started HRT yet so maybe that's something I should mention so the doc knows which type to give me. Strange that it's linked to stress though - as if it isn't annoying enough just as it is! Oh, and - burning lips too??? I hope that doesn't happen to me, my lips are really sensitive! Thanks for the tip about ice cream too 😁 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @TheBookHippie Luckily I was fairly unaffected other than a slight detour around town due to downed tree limbs but other people nearby aren't so lucky. No power or home damage. I guess that's one perk of living in a fairly new building in the town center. @Velvetfur Yes, all good here! Good luck with your symptoms. Sadly I'm closer to that stage of life than not, so it's good to know what I'm potentially looking forward to!😳 4y
Velvetfur @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Thank you for the good luck 🙂 I'm 44 and my symptoms started last year although I didn't realise until the start of this year, and my doc hadn't had a clue so I've had to do all the research myself. I suggest you have a look at the Instagram account 'themenopauseroom 4y
Velvetfur ⬆️ Oops pressed send by mistake! As I was saying.... So if you have a look on there they put loads of useful info, for example they once put a list of meno symptoms so you can recognise what's happening to you (for when it will happen, in your case), and then discuss that with your doc to get a blood test arranged (to check hormone levels). 👍🏻 4y
Velvetfur @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick sorry forgot to tag you in that ⬆️ one 🙂 4y
Andrew65 @Velvetfur Sending best wishes for some easing of these symptoms 🥰 4y
Andrew65 @CarolynM Gloucester does look lovely but don‘t think we have been into the centre ourselves. 4y
Andrew65 @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Sending best wishes for a smooth transition in your business life. 4y
Velvetfur @Andrew65 Thank you! It seems to have gone today 😁 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @Andrew65 Thank you! I'll give my bosses until Monday before I present them with a lengthy list of items & concerns to consider. 😁 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @Velvetfur Thank you for the advice & well-wishes! 4y

Practically any scene from this book would work for this!

It's a #holidaytradition in my household to watch this short story every year. Our tv recording of the book is so worn out we've just recently had to buy the DVD of it! 😂😂😂

Catt That was one of my favorite stories when I was little! I was in love with the words “cherry twist.” In fact, in 2nd grade I wrote a story based on The Tailor. My teacher thought I was brilliant. Haha! I felt a little bad about it at the time, but now I see plenty of books published that are remakes of classic plots! (edited) 5y

1️⃣ The word 'awesome' - no idea why!
2️⃣ Majorca/Corfu
3️⃣ Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
4️⃣ Tagged book - we watch it on VIDEO every year!
5️⃣ Favourite Christmas Carol adaptation (or other Christmas book to movie adaptation)?

#friyayintro @jess.how

Itchyfeetreader Do you know I am a huge Christmas fan but I don‘t have a favourite movie for the season. Hmm sounds like a thing I need to change 7y
DebbieGrillo My favourite Christmas movie is Its a Wonderful Life. The Greatest Gift is a 1943 short story written by Philip Van Doren Stern which became the basis for the film It's a Wonderful Life. 7y
MidnightBookGirl I love Christmas movies, and my favorite is a Hallmark move called A Season for Miracles. 7y

MemoirsForMe I really like the old 50's version of A Christmas Carol with Alastair Sim, but I also loved the 70's version of It's a Wonderful Life with Marlo Thomas and Cloris Leachman. 😊 7y
bentchbites There's this loosely based one with Vanessa Williams and I cant forget it because it always shows up on HBO when i had nothing else i wanted to watch on cable! 😂 7y
[DELETED] 206653737 My favorite Christmas Carol adaptation is the Disney Mickey Mouse one. Think that‘s because I grew up watching it. 7y

Tonight's book. I moved the book away before she actually had a chance to bite it. Yes I'm one of *those* people who are protective over their books lol!
