🙁Didn‘t love it. The story began well, liked the mystery of what was going on, spooky in the middle but then that paranormal thing appeared (not spoiler) It was for me even ridiculous🤷🏽‍♀️Again, my fault for expecting too much. 3⭐️

Not my favorite of hers but interesting nonetheless. A bit of horror but with cool vultures. Oh, and Lady Bugs.

I found this entertaining. A quick listen while working. Nothing too hard hitting but a good spooky story but also funny at times.

A weird but great/interesting read, reminded me of Horrid by Katrina Leno and How To Sell A Haunted House by Grady Hendrix.

Read for reading prompts.

I really enjoyed this book. Kingfisher's humor is just my style, and although it's not quite as creepy as I would prefer (not as many shivers down my spine as I was hoping for), it's creepy enough. I do like the theme of children contorting themselves trying to please their parents and the way that love can get distorted by need.

Samantha, an archeoentymologist, has to go stay with her mother after her job gets put on hold. The house belonged to her grandmother, her mean grandmother. As soon as she gets there she discovers all is not right. There are vultures and creepy, blood thirsty roses and a mother who seems less than herself. Samantha is humorous and very knowledgeable about bugs. That was my favorite part of this book. Her passion for bugs. This was alright.

ImperfectCJ I'm reading this one right now! (Well, right now I'm posting a comment on Litsy, but immediately before and after, I'm reading this novel.) I'm enjoying Kingfisher's humor. 10mo
Reggie @ImperfectCJ lol, yeah. I‘ve read another by her, The Hollow Places, and both were so funny. 10mo

3.5 rounded up to 4.

With her job on hold and word from her brother that "Mom seems off", Samantha Montogomery decides to pay mom a visit to see what exactly is going on.

This is my first book by T. Kingfisher and while this is a horror story, the horror is offset by the wisecracking Samantha and her wry personality which I truly enjoyed. While it does get a bit silly at times, it was an engrossing and imaginative tale.

I definitely enjoyed this haunted house story with gothic vibes. It was a little predictable until the absurdity at the end but I was all in. I loved the way the author told the story. I love horror books but sometimes they just leave too much unanswered and confusing. That was not the case for this one. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Kingfisher never disappoints! I love the protagonist for this one. I wasn‘t expecting it to go as long as it did- and I say this with all the affection in the world. I got bait and switched into a fourth act I wasn‘t expecting, but really liked.

𝟑.𝟓⭐ (low pick)
Enjoyable enough…but the humor fell a little flat for me and it was a little slow for as short as it was. Although, plenty of others loved this. Nettle and Bone is still by far, my favorite by this author.

- Mary Robinette Kowal‘s narration was sufficient.

A House With Good Bones by T. Kingfisher is a slow-burning gothic horror tale about blood and roses.

T. Kingfisher‘s style of writing here was such a blast to read! I loved that the narrator had such a humourous internal monologue even in times of stress.

Audiobook pick:
Creepy horror with a slow build that leads to a truly bizarre and scary ending. At one point I wasn't a fan of the direction of things, but then another twist redeemed the storyline for me. Overall, I love this writer's style.
The narrator was okay. I think I just prefer male narrators, I'm finding.

I wish I could have gotten a picture with one of the vultures hanging around our vacation house!

I greatly enjoyed this book. Kingfisher keeps the tone light and funny despite it being unmistakably a horror novel. Sam, the archaeoentemologist main character, is a constant delight, and all of the other characters are great—even the nosy old man across the street. I loved the inclusion of actual horrible occultists as connections to her family!

Another of Kingfisher‘s books weaved around the themes of nature. Vultures and bugs and roses this time—I really liked those parts.

The narration was a tad chirpy for a horror in the beginning (even for Kingfisher), and I had trouble getting into it. But it grew on me, especially the MC‘s relationship with her mother and the parts where she desperately denies what‘s happening and seeks every rational explanation possible.

I‘ve only seen glowing praise for this story so far. I did enjoy it, but really didn‘t love it like everyone seemed to. The narrator and mc, Sam was entertaining and I liked being in her head. The neighbors and mother were fine and the grandmother was interesting. The ending just fell really flat and it all came together so quickly. Too easy for me.

I enjoyed this book so I ordered my first signed edition hardcover from this author. The block sprayed edges are rose like the roses on the cover. The end papers are in the vein of old time wallpaper.

Nice book for my collection, it‘s in a smaller format since it‘s not a long book.

A very fun, creepy and slightly gross horror. A woman moves home temporarily between jobs and notices her mom is acting very strangely. The woman discovers strange things are happening in her home and it is not just a simple haunted house story. I am a big T. Kingfisher fan, and she brings a truly unique story yet again, if a little quick and ridiculous. 4⭐️

Interrupting my vacation weekend for my partner‘s birthday to rave about this book 😉💕🤩
I love Kingfisher so much! This book effortlessly blends Lovecraftian wizard horror with humorous observations from a cantankerous academic. I don‘t know how a book could be more in my wheelhouse, tbh, esp since the heroine is an archaeoethnoentomologist - and pretty close to what I used to be!

Beautiful wisteria before the terrible weather claimed it all over the weekend! It's an invasive nuisance but still so lovely 😍
I had to take a break from the tagged ARC, I just can't get into this one (which is a big bummer since I've enjoyed others by this author).

ShyBookOwl Awww. I love her horror stuff 2y
kyraleseberg @ShyBookOwl So do I! This one is just meandering through mundane day to day with the occasional ladybug infestation? And a vulture hanging out on a mailbox? It's giving major Charlaine Harris vibes and that's super frustrating to me. 2y

I really enjoy Kingfisher‘s writing - though I have to admit, this creepy audiobook literally gave me a nightmare set in a garden and I woke up to my own muffled screams… so if you‘re bug-averse like me, you may not want to grab this one. But, you will be missing out on a fast-paced, genuinely creepy and surprisingly funny book. I loved the main character and her return to her childhood home is a story that I know I won‘t ever forget!

🎧 I LOVED THIS BOOK!

Read & enjoyed a book by this author? If so, you‘ll like this.

Wonderful writing, a fun story!

Characters were so real & well defined. The evil grandma, sweet mom, entomologist daughter, Gail the witch, Phil the groundskeeper, cranky old man across the street & Hermes the pet vulture. Lots of bug talk.

Sweet, quirky, creepy, wicked as all get out.

I‘ll never look at roses, lady bugs or teeth the same again.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I love how well Kingfisher writes the creepy & absurd. This whole novel is straight out of left field & it is freaking marvelous. Gothic atmosphere on point. The narrative is a magnificent blend of horror & humor. Everything about this book felt unique & interesting. There is some mild predictability to the plot, but I actually didn't mind that. Putting normal people in paranormal situations is just Kingfisher's forte. Super fun & quick read.
