A Power Unbound | Freya Marske
35 posts | 18 read | 6 to read
Sublime prose, top-notch world-building, delightfully queer TJ Klune, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, on A Marvellous Light Secrets! Magic! Enemies to . . . something more? Jack Alston Lord Hawthorn would love a nice, safe, comfortable life. He renounced magic after the death of his twin sister. But with the threat of a dangerous ritual risking every magician in Britain, hes drawn reluctantly back into that world. Now Jack is living in a bizarre puzzle-box of a magical London townhouse, helping its owner Violet track down the final piece of the Last Contract before their enemies can do the same. And to make matters worse, they need the help of writer and thief Alan Ross. Cagey and argumentative, Alan is only in this for the money. Hes loud in his hatred of the aristocracy and their unearned power . . . and unfortunately, he happens to be everything that Jack wants in one gorgeous, infuriating package. When a plot to seize unimaginable magic power comes to a head on Jacks own family estate, Jack, Alan and their allies will become entangled in a night of champagne, secrets and bloody sacrifice and the foundations of magic in Britain might be torn up by the roots before the end. A Power Unbound is the spellbinding conclusion to The Last Binding trilogy by Freya Marske

I didn‘t think I could love a book more than I did the first two, but it happened! Marske makes excellent use of a trope I usually hate - enemies to lovers - and continues to build on already vivid character and world dynamics. She‘s also a master at spicy scenes if those are your jam, constantly one-upping her prior scenes somehow. Given how much I love this series, I was delighted to see a glimmer of more on the horizon. #lgbtqia #magic

It's really hard to choose between an intricate fantasy and a beautiful romance but alas these are the choices we're forced to make. A Power Unbound taking the title for the first half of the year 🏆

The last piece of the Last Contract is waiting to be found, the Assembly is close to seizing control of all the magic in Britain, & Jack & Alan cannot keep their hands off each other.

A solid ending! A slow burn (plot wise, not 🌶 wise), all of my favorite characters back, marvelous world building, all my questions answered! & a heist! I wasn‘t quite as invested in the romance as the first 2 books, but I was sold by the end. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

What an amazing end to this trilogy! I loved this journey. This one felt more fast paced than the others, full of more battles & a big climax. I LOVED Jack & Alan's storyline. The banter! Just watching their growth as they become more involved in the magical world where they don't feel they belong, & fighting against their attraction for each other (with poor results lol) Also getting to see all the couples working together & interacting was fun

The first orrery was built in 1704 and they were popular in the 18th century to explain the relatively new idea of the movements of the planets.
One was mentioned in the tagged book & I had never heard of it before so I had to do some googling to picture it

Fabulous ending to this trilogy! Marske really raises the stakes in multiple ways, and I absolutely love what ends up happening with British magic. Dufay is glorious. And the sex scenes are 🥵🥵🥵

Great finale to this trilogy! Spicy and with a good balance of romance and mystery/thriller as our team works to stop the bad guys in stealing all the magic in England for themselves.

The last book in this trilogy and it was so good! I loved this series and loved listening to them on audio. All the characters are together trying to stop them from getting the artifacts for the last contract. So much happening and so many ups and down! Strong conclusion to the series!

A confession: Freya Marske‘s worldbuilding and plots don‘t stick in my head well, so I had to relearn the ropes every time I picked up the next book in this trilogy, but her VIBES, y‘all. Her vibes stick with me so well I‘m pretty near addicted to them. They‘re what‘s got me hoping I‘ll have enough time to devour the last 130ish pages of A POWER UNBOUND later today, preferably in just a couple of sittings so I can really stay inside it.

Apologies for the terrible lighting...

#bookreport a good week, not what I forecast though! I finished Girl Waits with Gun, and started back on Wharton when my hold on A Power Unbound came through, like 8 weeks earlier than expected. So of course, I dropped everything for that--really enjoyed that trilogy.

#weeklyforecast back to Wharton, and maybe a #BookSpin or #roll100 pick

The third in a trilogy (I think), and I thought this tied up the story pretty well. Recommend for lovers of queer fantasy/ magical realism/ historical fantasy/ romance. They do have spice. I liked the main relationship in this one, as well as different views of previous characters.

It‘s a lighter pick, as I‘m sure within a few months I won‘t remember many details, but an enjoyable read/ listen.

AmyG Been thinking of you. Hope you are doing well in your new home. 😘 10mo

I absolutely loved this trilogy, and it had the perfect finish! The author has created my favorite magic system ever and the world and characters are fantastic. Not to mention how stunning all of the covers are. I can't wait to see what she comes up with next.

⭐️⭐️⭐️
The overarching story wrapped up really well, and I loved that we got to spend so much time with past characters. I loved Jack & learning more about him, but I never cared about the romance or about Alan in general, and as he was the other main character, that was a bit of a problem. And I had some issues with *spoilery* plot choices. I‘d still recommend this series, though, because the first book is fantastic, & the story arc is very good.

This was a really hard pick because I loved The Villa by Rachel Hawkins and A Power Unbound by Freya Marske, but in the end I had to pick A Power Unbound, which stuck out as a stunning end to a fantastic series.

5/5

Lord Hawthorn and Alan Ross continue to find themselves drawn into the magical power struggles around the Last Contract. They're drawn closer together and deeper into magic as the magical world comes to a reckoning over the Last Contract.

This was somehow the best book in what was already an incredible series. It managed to be tense and surprising with a satisfying conclusion to the series.

GondorGirl I'm about halfway through the first book and loving it. I'm glad the series continues to be good. I look forward to reading this one. 12mo

Did a teeny tiny Happy Dance on Tuesday in a bookshop when I got the approval to listen to the #ARC of the final book in The Last Binding trilogy.

I had high expectations and was afraid that they might be disappointed, but I liked how the whole trilogy wrapped up. Furthermore, the romantic story of Alan and Jack, who were secondary characters previously, was well-done and with lots of spice, too.

The Last Binding trilogy ends with a bang as Jack Hawthorne, Alan Ross, and the rest of the gang try to head off the magicians attempting to steal all of Britain's magic for themselves. As with the others it's equal parts action, romance, mystery, and historical fantasy with a heaping handful of spice thrown in. Finally getting Jack's POV after seeing his evolution through the books was a perfect capstone to the series. Love, love, love.
