Rooster has come a long way for his new job in a new country, but finds he has trouble communicating with the locals in this special and boldly illustrated picture book. Rooster is nervous to start his brand-new job in a brand-new country, but most of all hes excited. Hes always been great at his job and knows how to cock-a-doodle-doo and wake people up! But here, so far from home, nothing seems to be working no matter how loud or how long Rooster crows. Can Rooster find a way to communicate with his new neighbors?

Way too soon to my taste the #ToB25 shortlist has been published!

I am a bit disappointed by the predictability of the chosen books. Many are quite popular and well known, many are too “light” to my taste. And I‘ve read almost all of them, while I hoped for some obscure ones.

Never mind, it‘s TOB so it will be fun!

Bookwormjillk I was thinking the same. I am not supposed to have read any of these 😂 2mo
BarbaraBB @Bookwormjillk Exactly that! 2mo
sarahbarnes Why do they publish it so soon?!! And agreed - I want the shortlist to be more obscure. Oh well, I guess we still have the long list! 📚 2mo

BkClubCare Thanks for the 🏷️ 🌟 💖 📚 2mo
squirrelbrain Yes, I agree with everyone else. A. It‘s too soon. B. I wanted it to be different books, not the ones that are everywhere already. @Bookwormjillk @sarahbarnes @BkClubCare 2mo
Hooked_on_books I‘m disappointed at the inclusion of All Fours since it was one of their camp books and I hated it. There‘s still a few left for me to read (though I likely won‘t bother with the Link), but yes, I‘ve already read most. 2mo
Megabooks Yeah, I‘ve already read most of these. Like @Hooked_on_books I won‘t bother with the Link. I tried when it came out and HATED the first several pages. Every other one I‘ll try to read or have read. Too bad wolf at the table didn‘t make it — I‘m really enjoying it!!! (edited) 2mo
Megabooks It is too soon. I agree. I‘m still enjoying the longlist!! 2mo
BarbaraBB @Hooked_on_books I don‘t feel like discussing All Fours (or James for that matter) again, they already feel old! 2mo
BarbaraBB @Megabooks Me too, I have a lot I still want to read. And that includes George now, I guess 🤷🏻‍♀️😉 2mo
Chelsea.Poole I agree, I had two more coming up for the longlist to read that didn‘t make the cut. Current read is Godwin and wanted to get to My Friends. 2mo
Megabooks @Chelsea.Poole My Friends is on my definitely want to read list, too! 2mo
Megabooks @ImperfectCJ had a whole different take on George than I did! Hopefully you‘ll love it. 2mo
BarbaraBB @Chelsea.Poole Is Godwin good? 2mo
BarbaraBB @Megabooks I hope so too. My Friends is very good! 2mo
BkClubCare Well, I for one, am glad the Creation Lake and Wandering Stars is off the table. Sad about a few I was looking forward to, but many of these are still new to me. (Tho, am in total agreement that James feels old and everywhere! And I won‘t retry All Fours) 2mo
Suet624 I‘m just happy The History of Sound made it on the shortlist. I guess I‘m in the minority because for once, I‘m happy that I‘ve read so many of them. That means I don‘t have to go running all over creation trying to find the obscure books. Maybe they‘re trying to be more main stream this year? 2mo
BarbaraBB @Suet624 I am reading that one right now and am enjoying it very much! As expected! 2mo
Larkken Lol. Only one out of my current top three from the longlist 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1mo
Larkken @Suet624 lol, it is nice knowing I have a chance to find and read them all before judging time for sure 1mo
Larkken It looks like they picked books off of existing best of lists tbh. 1mo
BarbaraBB @Larkken I agree, it seems a collection of the best of lists unfortunately! Which ones are your top three? 1mo
Larkken @BarbaraBB I've resonated most with You Dreamed of Empires, Glorious Exploits, and James ( but that last feels obvious! Lol). I wonder if my top three will change as I finish the short list? 1mo
BarbaraBB @Larkken Interesting! I have read only James of those. Will check out both others! 1mo

Here‘s my guesses for the 2024 ToB longlist. I can‘t see it without some major releases like Rooney‘s Intermezzo, Powers‘ Playground, and Everett‘s James. Ones that are interesting that may be too contemporary are Thorpe‘s Margo‘s Got Money Troubles or Lombardo‘s Same As It Ever Was. One could make a case for Camp Litsy‘s Bear, too. I think one about AI robots will make it in: the Gatwood above, Annie Bot or maybe Hey, Zoey. #tobwaiting

Megabooks Thanks for coming up with this idea, B!! 3mo
Bookwormjillk My TBR is getting so long! I can‘t wait to see the list. 3mo
squirrelbrain Great choices! I really want to read the Senna but it‘s not easily available over here yet. 3mo

BarbaraBB Thanks for sharing yours Meg! I think your analysis is spot on and i can‘t wait to see if the TOB agrees. Also I love your choices; I read two of course for #CampLitsy24 and an super interested in the others. 3mo
Megabooks @Bookwormjillk I am so excited about it!! 3mo
Megabooks @squirrelbrain oh boo!! I hope you‘re able to read it at some point. Maybe a kindle deal in the future?? 3mo
Megabooks @BarbaraBB thanks! I‘m really excited to see which new wonderfully weird books they‘ll have! 3mo
Meshell1313 Good guesses!!! I can totally see that! 3mo
Megabooks @Meshell1313 thanks! I can‘t wait to see what they come up with. 3mo
Ruthiella I almost picked Whoever You Are Honey for my list. I‘ve not read it yet but want to based on your review on Litsy. 3mo
Suet624 Great picks. I hope you‘re right because I‘ve already read a bunch of them and it would save me a bunch of time to not have to read as many! 3mo
Megabooks @Ruthiella it was a surprise hit! I liked Hey, Zoey, too, but it wasn‘t quite as good as the Gatwood. I found Annie Bot too stressful and bailed. I can‘t deal with abusive relationships in books sometimes. 3mo
Megabooks @Ruthiella I am reading this domestic abuse memoir, but I‘m unsure whether I‘ll finish. 3mo
Megabooks @Suet624 yes! I‘ve read all but The Night Guest, and that‘s on my TBR for this month. Pink Slime I didn‘t care for, but it‘s on the NBA translation longlist, so I think it has a shot. Plus they always pick it least one dystopian. 3mo
Chelsea.Poole @Ruthiella I also had Whoever You Are Honey on my list before changing it out. 3mo
Chelsea.Poole This is a great list and I agree with your choices. I think Martyr will make an appearance. 3mo

Ok, here‘s my “I hope they‘re on the TOB longlist cuz I want to read them and haven‘t yet” picks. 😬 Tagging those who have already posted theirs.

#TOBwaiting

Ruthiella Great group of books. I‘ve read the Khong title and I‘ve read other books from Abby Geni and Julia Armfield, but the rest are completely new and sound really incredible. 3mo
Bookwormjillk I almost added Misinterpretation to my list too. I‘m going to read it for sure. 3mo
squirrelbrain My TBR is getting longer…. I‘ve read the Armfield and own the Khong but the rest are all new to me. 3mo

Chelsea.Poole Nice picks! I am interested in 3mo
BarbaraBB I have read none of these and am interested in them all 🤦🏻‍♀️😂 (edited) 3mo
sarahbarnes I didn‘t know Armfield had a new one out - very exciting! 3mo
BkClubCare Yay! Thank you 😊 3mo
Megabooks I did not realize Armfeld had a new one! Thanks for sharing. And I did read The Unshrinking and loved it. Thanks for your kind recs as always!! 3mo
Hooked_on_books @Megabooks That‘s great about Unshrinking. Really good book. And the Armfield is out in December. I can‘t wait! @sarahbarnes (edited) 3mo

Here‘s my hopes for the #TOBlonglist @BarbaraBB
#TOBWaiting

Ruthiella Ooh. The Unmothers sounds quite creepy and good. 😱😃 3mo
squirrelbrain I‘ve just read Entitlement but the rest are all new to me. 3mo
BarbaraBB You‘re having Mina‘s Matchbox too. So excited for that one. As for the others, I can‘t wait to check them out! 3mo

BkClubCare Yay! I so appreciate everyone‘s lists. Getting a jump on the possibles - woo hoo! 3mo
BkClubCare @BarbaraBB - LOVED that one. No wonder that author name jumped out at me. 3mo
BkClubCare @Ruthiella - it so does! Creepy, for sure. 3mo
Bookwormjillk @BarbaraBB haven‘t read that one yet! 3mo
Bookwormjillk @squirrelbrain I really want to love that one despite the reviews so it made my list. 3mo
Megabooks I definitely think Entitlement and The Unmothers have a great shot. Unmothers sounds wonderfully f‘ed up! 3mo

#ToBwaiting

Great idea @BarbaraBB to post our thoughts on what might be on the ToB longlist, but very difficult to choose just 6!

I haven‘t read any of these but either own them or have access to them on a platform such as Everand (my library apps are not ‘weird‘ enough for the ToB! 🤪)

I‘ll also tag two below that I think should be on the list but probably too UK-based to be included.

squirrelbrain I‘m listening to this one at the moment and LOVING it. 3mo
squirrelbrain I haven‘t read this yet, but have it on audio. 3mo
Ruthiella Ooh! I definitely want to read The Extinction of Irina Rey! I didn‘t think of the Hari Kunzru title, AND I OWN IT! 😂 3mo
See All 10 Comments
squirrelbrain @ruthiella - I‘ve had Irena Rey on my Women‘s Prize and Booker prediction lists as well - I‘ve got to be right some time, haven‘t I?! 3mo
BarbaraBB Oh wow these are so obscure I haven‘t heard of most of them! I have read Irena Rey but that‘s about it. So exciting! 3mo
sarahbarnes Fun list! More for my TBR! 3mo
Bookwormjillk I Cheerfully Refuse was on my summer list but I never got to it. Must do that soon. 3mo
BkClubCare @BarbaraBB - actually this collection is more familiar to me, tho I haven‘t read any. It‘s so interesting what/when titles wiggle into the brain 🧠, huh? 🤔 NOT ENOUGH TIME 3mo
BarbaraBB @BkClubCare It is, and how we end up liking such similar books! (edited) 3mo
Megabooks Great choices, Helen! I‘m getting the Greenwell for Christmas and am very excited. I think it being about the US health system will hit hard. 😬😬 3mo

#TOBwaiting

In a recent post of @BkClubCare we‘ve been guessing about the ToB longlist, which will be published sometime in November. I thought why not make the most of our anticipation and share the six books we hope to see on that longlist?

It‘ll definitely give us some inspiration for books to check out - whether they make the longlist or not.

These are mine, I hope you‘ll share yours!

(Tagging the #CampLitsy24 participants for a start)

Ruthiella Thanks for the tag! I‘ll take a crack at it! 🎶 It‘s the most wonderful time of the year 🎵 Rooster time! 🐓 3mo
Bookwormjillk I don‘t even know where to start, but I‘ll give it a try! 3mo
Hooked_on_books I like this idea, but like the others, I‘ll have to think about this a bit. I notice 5 of your books seem to have a color scheme theme. 3mo
Bookwormjillk What are the guidelines for the tournament? Is it anything published in 2024? 3mo
CatLass007 Thanks for the tag. What does #ToB stand for? Several of these books are on my wish list. 3mo
cariashley Yay, I‘ve been waiting for TOB news! I‘m hoping to get back into it this time after not being able to do it last time (life…). Will have to think about this! 3mo
Suet624 I rely solely on other Litsy recommendations and you all have never steered me wrong. 3mo
BarbaraBB @Bookwormjillk Yes! Just books published in 2024. All choices are arbitrary as they say themselves! 3mo
Bookwormjillk @BarbaraBB thanks! I wasn‘t sure if they removed the books from Camp TOB but couldn‘t find anything on their website. I‘ll have to go back to my #CampLitsy lists to see what I missed. 3mo
BarbaraBB @cariashley I hope you‘ll be there again, we‘ve missed you! 3mo
AmyG Thanks for the tag! I need to think about this. 3mo
Susanita I‘ll have to think about it too… 3mo
squirrelbrain Exciting! I‘ll post mine later (or tomorrow…. Or the weekend!) ❤️ 3mo
Cathythoughts These all look good. I must investigate 👍🏻♥️ 3mo
Larkken Ooh, fun! I‘ll have a snoop… 3mo
sarahbarnes Fun list and fun idea! 😃 Mina‘s Matchbox is definitely on my list of books I‘m excited to read. I tried reading If Only recently and couldn‘t get into it, but I think it was just me at the time because I loved her other book. 3mo
BarbaraBB @sarahbarnes Wow, you did try If Only already! I just discovered its existence 🤩. But I loved her other book too so I have high hopes. I hope it just wasn‘t the moment to start it for you 🤞🏽 3mo
sarahbarnes Honestly I think I had a book hangover from Intermezzo when I tried to start it. I‘ll likely try again. 3mo
Deblovestoread Thanks for the tag! Will give it some thought! 💜 3mo
CatLass007 Thank you for the link! 3mo
Meshell1313 Ooh fun! I think James for sure will make the cut! 3mo
Chelsea.Poole Very exciting! This will be fun! 3mo
Chelsea.Poole Also, great guesses! I really want to read Liars. I‘m on hold for the audio. 3mo
dabbe Thanks for the inspiration! 🤩😀🤗 3mo
Caroline2 Ohhh exciting!! 😃 3mo
BkClubCare Oh MY!! 👏😆🎉 3mo
CarolynM All the books on the ToB list are usually new to me. I‘ll have a look at these that you have chosen🙂 3mo
Megabooks Liars made me so angry!! I think you‘re right on target with Fruit, and I enjoyed it. I checked out Mina‘s again today. Hopefully I‘ll get to it this time!! 3mo
