The Girl in His Shadow
The Girl in His Shadow: A Novel | Audrey Blake
THE USA TODAY BESTSELLER! "An exquisitely detailed journey through the harrowing field of medicine in mid-19th century London."Tracey Enerson Wood, USA Today bestselling author of The Engineer's Wife and The War Nurse An unforgettable historical fiction novel about one woman who believed in scientific medicine before the world believed in her. London, 1845: Raised by the eccentric surgeon Dr. Horace Croft after losing her parents to a deadly pandemic, the orphan Nora Beady knows little about conventional life. While other young ladies were raised to busy themselves with needlework and watercolors, Nora was trained to perfect her suturing and anatomical illustrations of dissections. Women face dire consequences if caught practicing medicine, but in Croft's private clinic Nora is his most trustedand secretassistant. That is until the new surgical resident Dr. Daniel Gibson arrives. Dr. Gibson has no idea that Horace's bright and quiet young ward is a surgeon more qualified and ingenuitive than even himself. In order to protect Dr. Croft and his practice from scandal and collapse Nora must learn to play a new and uncomfortable rolethat of a proper young lady. But pretense has its limits. Nora cannot turn away and ignore the suffering of patients, even if it means giving Gibson the power to ruin everything she's worked for. And when she makes a discovery that could change the field forever, Nora faces an impossible choice. Remain invisible and let the men around her take credit for her work, or step into the lighteven if it means being destroyed by her own legacy. Fans of The Other Einstein and The Paris Library will relish this riveting and empowering story about one woman's fight to follow her dreams and build a lifeand legacybeyond what is expected of her. Praise for The Girl in His Shadow: "A suspenseful story of a courageous young woman determined to become a surgeon in repressive Victorian England. Fluidly written, impeccably researched, The Girl in His Shadow is a memorable literary gift to be read, reread, and treasured."Gloria Goldreich, author of The Paris Children Other Bestselling Historical Fiction from Sourcebooks Landmark: The Mystery of Mrs. Christie by Marie Benedict The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson Sold on a Monday by Kristina McMorris

I enjoyed this tale of a brilliant young woman fighting to practice medicine in the early 19th century.
A local library “group read”.

When Nora‘s family die in a pandemic, she is taken in by Dr. Croft, mainly so he can study her recovery and how the disease would affect her in the future. As Nora grows up, she becomes Croft‘s student and assistant in his clinic, unfortunately it is illegal for women to practice medicine.
The secret becomes harder to keep when Croft takes on a new surgical resident and Nora has to pretend to be a proper lady.

An excellent story all the way around. We take for granted the medical advances all around us, but this book highlights the struggles that brought about modern medicine. The primary plot line is about Nora, the ward of a doctor and her desire to be a doctor in a society where it was unthinkable for women to do so. Great characters, well plotted, it‘s the first of a series, and I‘ve already started the next book.

Decent story. Not for those who may find descriptions of medical procedures disturbing. I liked the characters, most could have used some more development, but I enjoyed the story enough that it didn‘t matter. I‘ll pick up the sequel when I can!

Book 99

The Girl in His Shadow by Audrey Blake was an excellent listen. Set in London in the 1800's, Nora, who lost her parents in a pandemic, is raised and trained in medicine by a doctor, in a time when a female practicing medicine was illegal. The characters are strong, and I will read more by the author. 4 stars

Came across this one because it was promoted on my Overdrive. The concept intrigued me and it did not disappoint. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and the plot, even when I could see what was coming. Highly recommend this one and can‘t wait to read more by Audrey Blake.

Orphaned Nora Beady becomes the ward of the unconventional doctor that saved her life during the pandemic. Dr. Croft teaches Nora medical experiments and has her assist him in his clinic during a time when women were not allowed to practice medicine. Nora is talented and falls in love with the new doctor that joins Dr. Croft in the clinic. She has to choose a life practicing in the shadows or embark on a journey overseas.

Orphaned by cholera, Nora becomes the ward of the doctor who treated her and eventually his assistant. Only, women aren‘t allowed to practice medicine and they‘re very much blurring those lines. This is a great story and I‘m so pleased with the research the authors did, as they got the medicine and medical history right, which is all too rare.

I highly enjoyed this book. This historical fiction story of a woman in the medical field in the 1840s really had me hooked. Nora was very admirable. She was strong, kind, and hardworking. She was eager to expand her knowledge of the human body but women were not allowed to practice in England. The book had an open ending, which meant there would be another book. I am looking forward to reading it. 4⭐️

Such a great read about an empowered woman educated by the Dr who brought her up after her family dies from cholera, and the repercussions and triumphs that has on her life and her life choices. I thoroughly enjoyed the writing style and learned a great deal about women in medicine. This would make a fantastic book club read.

I was blown away by Nora and her intense determination to help those in need medically. Though she couldn't help being born in a time that didn't allow woman to practice medicine, she found a way to learn and be useful. Nora's appetite for medical knowledge was unparalleled compare to any other character. She was fearless in her pursuit to aid others.

May was a great reading/listening month with a high percentage of audiobooks. I completed 15 books, including War & Peace which I‘ve been working through since the first of the year. I caught up on 4 books for the #NarniaReadalong and completed 4 from the #1001books list. Additionally, the tagged book was a fantastic new release read for #LitsyBookClub.

This book was fantastic! I wasn‘t sure about another book with girl in the title, but Nora is an incredibly tough & intelligent young girl who becomes a strong & determined woman. Beginning in 1845, Nora has grown up the ward of an eccentric surgeon before the use of of general anesthesia. She works with him as secretary, artist, nurse, & assistant until the arrival of another doctor to the practice means her skills can no longer remain secret.

Daisey Author is actually Audrey Blake, a collaboration between Jaima Fixsen & Regina Sirois. Thanks to #Sourcebooks for sending another amazing book to the #LitsyBookClub! 4y
