First time with this author, boy have I been sleeping! This was intense, imaginative, haunting, and emotional. Did not expect the twist ending. Immediately had me checking out his other books, and I‘m so glad there are many to choose from!
Trigger warnings: Death, suicide, torture, murder, gun violence, death of a child.
I just finished sobbing my way through this book, but I‘m not even sure where to begin. It is tender, heart-wrenching, filled with hope, laughter, and sadness. I don‘t want to give any spoilers, I highly recommend reading the personal note from the author afterward. Highly recommend. It does contain depictions of domestic violence and sympathy for the abuser. The story was engaging with well-developed and nuanced characters.
Hibernating this for a little bit, just because I need some lighter books this season.
Picked this up after Ryan Holiday said that Ask the Dust was his fav novel. This book it #1 in the series, so I‘m starting here. I need some fiction sprinkled in!
Pausing my other books to try and get through this during the loan period. This is the 2nd in his Virtues series, but I have not read the first one. He‘s a great storyteller, I‘m enjoying this so far, especially intertwined with my other Stoic book.
Still working through this. It‘s slow going, not because the book is hard to read, but because it makes one think and take action. Exactly what I need right now.
I‘ve decided to become a “practicing Stoic” and actually put this advice to use.
The book makes some great points, helps translate the Stoic teaching to modern words and applications.
Thoroughly enjoying it for its ability to make me pause and reflect.
Still reading through this daily. We lost our sweet cat last week, so it‘s put me back a bit, but also emphasizes just how much I need to put this into practice.
Some of these techniques are ones I‘ve already somewhat adopted without realizing it, but it‘s nice to get validation.
Enjoying this book, even though you kinda have to do the work, too!
Including photo of our girl.
Picking this one back up again, going through some rough life moments (extra stress, sick kitty, etc), which has left me contemplative. I think this might be just what I need to read at the moment.
This book was not what I expected, but it was still very, very good. It felt a little rushed at the end and left me wanting to know more about what their future held. The world was totally unique (to me), the ending kind of smacked of “just love one another, man”, but we need more of that!
The pacing was a little slow, as befits the characters. Not a lot of action, but an interesting read. Recommended.
Finished up Part 1, I‘m really enjoying this so far! It‘s a little chaotic and confusing because the narrator assumes you know the workings of their world, but given the events in this Part, it could also be intentional.
Only a few pages in, but this is a really unique concept. Unfortunately I‘ve never heard of this author (I‘m not usually a fan of the genre), but if this quality holds up, I‘ll be seeking out his other books!
Decent story. Not for those who may find descriptions of medical procedures disturbing. I liked the characters, most could have used some more development, but I enjoyed the story enough that it didn‘t matter. I‘ll pick up the sequel when I can!
Great book, so much to unpack. Will pick up the next in the series when I can. Chaotic but soooo good! So many facets of human nature seen, and many responses to adversity.
I loved that this was written from they eyes of Cuban and Salvadoran women, some of the most invisible in this country. Each character was beautifully written with all their flaws and strengths. I love the Discussion Topics at the end. Thought-provoking, a gentle reminder that every face has a story, and single actions can have generation-defining consequences.
Picked this up from my library‘s Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month collection...it was selection #2, the first one ended up being an audio book (We Set the Dark on Fire), which wasn‘t available in ebook. The premise sounds interesting.
This is a book that sticks with you. I can‘t stop thinking about it, and that - while the families were fictional - this was based on real events.
The fictional families were well-written, although I wish more time was spent with Avery, Judy, and May. Some things seemed rush.
But young Rill‘s story was the gem of the book, it was delicately written and her personality shines through.
Highly recommend this book!
Oh my goodness, I‘m only 20% through and I‘m just hooked!! A thoroughly engrossing book, such a contrast between the narration in the past and the future. I can‘t wait to see where this goes and who ends up being who!
I don‘t event know where to start with this one, I tore through it in a day. It was insanely good. Gripping story, weaving through 3 different times. Highly recommended!
I really enjoyed this book. Some Amazon reviews decided to focus on the small amount of Communist ideology in the story. Yes, there is involvement with the Community 'party', but that was also the history of the time. The book hardly 'sells' it, the focus is more on workers' rights / revealing humanity. The story itself was moving, tragic, hopeful. I definitely recommend it!
Borrowed this from the library. Amazon had a lot of great reviews, but it‘s being described as a romance version of Grapes of Wrath (one of my fav books), so I‘m sold! Once I‘m finished with it, I‘ll comment on the reviews that it‘s pushing “political” views (communism?).
A difficult but heartwarming book. I‘d consider it late YA for content about self-harm. This book made me happy, angry, sad, and hopeful. The characters were a little one-dimensional sometimes, but the main character was beautifully written.
Finished this quick YA read. I‘d consider it low-magic fantasy with some mythical animals. Power struggles, intrigue, light romance. I like the protagonist. Nice beach read or for between more serious books. Will continue the series if I can!
I finished this up last night. What a great read! The ending to book 1 felt a little rushed or incomplete, but that is probably intended due to the events that happened (Fitz isn‘t all-knowing!). I looooved the depth of descriptions. I read the illustrated version of the book, which was nice to “see” some of the characters. The artwork was very well done. I‘ll be picking up the next in the series as soon as I finish up another book or two.
Just started this, since my loan was ready at my library. So far, this is similar to other Mel books. Not too deep, but small behavior changes that might work for you. I like her conversational style. Some things seem corny, but they‘re so easy that you can‘t really NOT do them (which, I think, I‘d the point).
Kindle tells me that I‘m 43% through the book, and I am already enthralled with the storytelling. An interesting world that you learn about bit by bit through the eyes of a boy. I already see myself picking up the next book as soon as I can.
