Darcy Coates brings you a brand-new horror novel that'll take your breath away... From Belowis: Perfect for fans of Jennifer McMahon and Wendy Webb For lovers of ghost stories and anyone mesmerized by the depths of the ocean--and what hides in the darkness Years ago, the SS Arcadiavanished without a trace during a routine voyage. Though a strange, garbled emergency message was broadcast, neither the ship nor any of its crew could be found. Sixty years later, its wreck has finally been discovered more than three hundred miles from its intended course. Cove and her dive team have been granted permission to explore its rusting hull. Their purpose is straightforward: explore the wreck, film everything, and, if possible, uncover how and why the supposedly unsinkable ship vanished. But the Arcadiahas not yet had its fill of death, and something dark watches them from below. With limited oxygen and a presence on the ship that's determined to keep them on board, if Cove and her team are trapped beneath the ocean's waves, there'll be no going back.

In the 2nd half, the team of divers face that the Arcadia ship was sunk on purpose and why it felt alive and moving. There were reasons that the ship was not explored and it was only realized when they faced what the ship had been showing. This book is closely tied to subtle and descriptive horror that does not have too much action. The theme is ignorance since they do not 100% know each other's true self as they also ignore signs of the abnormal.

Opening to a team of divers explorning the lost ship SS Arcadia as their dives shows the paranormal activities on the ship. I would recommend this to those who enjoys the sureal horror work of Junji Ito. Written in third person omniscient the author was able to smoothly intervene between dialogue to add the details on how and why the team was able to get together and work, and through the characters emotion is one of the main way it was shown.

⭐️⭐️⭐️not a high pick for me due to the slowness that dragged the book in areas but solid premise. Ghost ships and underwater terror was well played out. Story needed to be tighter to stay effective.

I really liked this story. I have to say that I like so much how this author describes the events. This is about an expedition to try to locate Arcadia ship and explore what happened. Cove and her team will dive to examine the area but it seems that inside Arcadia “...something dark and hungry watches from below” (taken from the book blurb). Maybe the ending was abrupt, maybe some parts were repetitive dragging the story but it was atmospheric⬇️

Gissy If you are claustrophobic or have phobia to be deep in the ocean, I don‘t think this book is for you. There are some parts that I felt that I was drowning or felt that I needed air but that was part of this story. In terms of the horror part, well I was not too scary but it is because that is not my best horror trope. Still I enjoyed the story. I read the physical book with the audio. 3.8⭐️ Received book from @lirahlu 07/01/2022 #SummerSpookySwap 13mo

Thank you so much @RosePressedPages everything is wonderful! I have never read Darcy Coates so I‘m looking forward to that one on your enthusiastic recommendation! And the others are both books I‘ve been looking forward to reading, thank you! I love the window clings and the tote, and the socks are adorable! The cookie and the soap are so fun—thank you again for everything.

CSeydel I had to include a pic of the cute wrapping paper before I opened the books. So festive!! 👻🎃🖤 13mo

My plan for the #popupsaturday weekend readathon is to try to get through this chunker. I‘m over 100 pages in so far and have 300 something left to go. So if I can finish it I would be thrilled. I‘ve got a concert Sunday night so we‘ll see if that actually happens but work is going to be pretty slow tomorrow so perhaps I can sneak a few pages in there.

#scarathlon #magicalmonsters

AmandaBlaze I also plan on reading this sometime during the #Scarathlon, so let me know how it goes! 14mo
RainyDayReading @AmandaBlaze Will do! I‘m 200 pages in now and really loving it! Definitely has the creep factor I was hoping for. 14mo

#BookReport
After reading through everyone‘s lovely advice for reading slumps, I tried a mix of graphic novels and a reread of a favorite book, From Below by Darcy Coates. It helped!

#WeeklyForecast
I Kissed Shara Wheeler is my first pick from my Feb tbr and I‘m obsessed so far! I‘m also listening to Out of the Depths. I‘m hoping to start Flip the Script and The Murder of Mr. Wickham soon. Puck Me Secretly is my book club‘s pick this month.

I feel like I am completely missing something with this book…it was just…so…slow! I made it to almost 150 pages and was so bored I didn‘t even want to pick it up again. Everyone seems to love it and the description sounds like I should too but nothing is happening! What am I missing?

Two of my favorite books this year are From Below and Dead Silence. Can anyone recommend any other similar books in space or ocean suspense/horror genre?

I do love ghosts and ghost ships, as well as creatures. I also really liked The Luminous Dead, so books centered in caves are great too.
BUT, I am not a fan of body horror. No Nick Cutter. Parasites and bugs are also a no.

THANKS!!!!! I'm excited to see what's out there (pun intended).

Nessavamusic Have you read this one? It‘s so good 2y
MaleficentBookDragon @Nessavamusic oh yes!!! I love that one and the prequel. I‘ve read them AND listened to the audiobooks several times. 🧜‍♀️ I‘m so excited that there will be a 🎥 🍿. Someday. (edited) 2y
Nessavamusic @MaleficentBookDragon ooh yeah, I loved all of these books so I‘m curious to see if anyone else posts. 2y

Bookzombie For space, both of these by Kali Wallace were good. I liked SD more. I also think you might have read it. 2y
Bookzombie This duology is YA but I liked it. 2y
RosePressedPages Omg, I‘m reading Dead Silence right now and I LOVED From Below. I‘ve been trying to find good spooky/haunted ship stories! I‘m not sure any of these will be good, but I‘ve found It Came From the Sea by Matt Wildasin, Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant, Haunting the Deep by Adrianna Mather, Something‘s Alive on the Titanic by Robert Serling, They Came from the Ocean by Boris Bacic, The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware, A Fatal Crossing by Tom H. 2y
RosePressedPages Also, Dead Lake by Darcy Coates, Secrets So Deep by Ginny Myers Sain, The Devil and the Deep by Ellen Datlow, Deck Z: The Titanic: Unsinkable. Undead. By Chris Pauls. I haven‘t read any of these yet but I‘ve been making a list of possible haunted ocean/space stories too. 2y
MaleficentBookDragon @Bookzombie that does sound good. Stacked. (edited) 2y

This is the haunted shipwreck book I‘ve been craving! I‘m obsessed with shipwrecks, and I love a good spooky/haunted ghost story. I LOVED the dual timelines, but was more excited whenever it got to the Arcadia‘s storyline (which was *chef‘s kiss*). It was creepy, it kept me on edge, and the mystery was thrilling! I didn‘t want it to end! I‘ve added it to my favorites list. I‘m looking forward to finding more haunted shipwreck stories.

This was a tense suspense thriller about a dive/documentary team exploring a sunken ship that went missing in suspicious circumstances. It is a little too long and could use some editing. 4⭐️

3½⭐ - A Low Pick

The Good:
⚬Super creepy atmosphere
⚬The explanation for the sinking of the ship was unexpected and rather interesting.

The Bad:
⚬The lengthy confrontation scenes with the entities were rather tedious and difficult to keep up with.
⚬Too much time-flipping with only one narrator made for a confusing listen. ⚬Unfortunately, what I didn‘t like outweighed what I did like…and left me underwhelmed.

Shipwreck horror? YES PLEASE. I couldn‘t put down this book until I finished it in the wee hours. And I thought sharks were the scariest things in the ocean: Not. Even. Close. 😱⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I usually don‘t read ghosts stories because they usually bore me but this one is a solid one. It‘s creepy, fast-paced, claustrophobic, and yeah.. ghosts.. under water.
In 1928 the SS Arcadia sinks without a trace close to the Swedish coast. 60 years later her wreck has been discover and a crew of 6 people sets out to explore the wreck and to film their exploration. What they find is more down at the bottom is more than just a wreck.

So today was my birthday and my boys made me both breakfast and dinner and took me to my two favorite stores relatively close to me: Barnes and Noble and Yankee Candle. I got such good deals (semi annual sale at Yankee and 2 gift cards to B&N!), including the Darcey Coates book that I just looked up and isn‘t supposed to come out until 6/7! Thanks Barnes and Noble 🤣! The magnetic bookmarks are so shiny and pretty too!

So, I‘ve been off the grid. The #manpanion and I have Covid. 😷I‘ve spent the last 5 days shivering 🥶 and whimpering under the covers. I‘m hoping my headache goes away soon so I can start reading this #arc
I‘m really looking forward to this one. It almost makes up for having to cancel a fun planned weekend down in Virginia with my sister (we had high ☕️, 🪓 throwing, and Maverick 🍿 on the agenda 😞).
