2nd book in Barsetshire series, you can read it as a stand alone. I have mix feeling with this novel. Funny in some awkward family situations. But even when there is a note describing the time the novel was written, there are comments that are unacceptable in our time. You‘ll see prejudice comments against French persons and misogynist comments. But taking in consideration that fact and focusing exclusively in the family dynamic, I enjoyed it 3⭐️

Bedtime reading.
(And it‘s much cozier than the Ted Bundy bedtime reading from last week 😬).

I have been, unfortunately, very ill these past few days, but this light and fun story of a quirky family in between-the-wars England was just the distraction the doctor ordered. I didn‘t enjoy this quite as much as High Rising, and there are some unfortunate racist asides that I skimmed past, but it was a pleasant read overall. I especially liked the slightly batty matriarch, Lady Emily Leslie. Also, great intro by Alexander McCall Smith.

A sick day for my youngest means I finish one book and buy the next in the series without moving from the couch. Sad for my poor babe, but grateful for Angela Thirkell‘s light-hearted wit...and technology.

I never miss the last day of the library book sale when everything is $1. I really tried to limit my #bookhaul this year but think I did pretty darn well. Every year I wish I could stay home on Monday and read my new books and this year I can since I ended my old job on Friday (finally!) and have a week off before I start my new one.

This is not in my normal reading wheelhouse so take my opinion with a grain of salt. Privileged rich folk frolicking in their English country house in the 1930s exuberantly insulting one another with amusing banter & falling quickly into romantic crushes. Amusing peek into a bygone era & a class of people, but I was easily annoyed by these flighty folk.
Quick, light read. And I can‘t give anything less than a pick to a lovely Virago edition.

4⭐️ A gentle, relaxing treat of a read. It isn‘t at all a plot driven book; rather just immerse yourself in the delicious descriptions of 1930‘s big house life in the countryside. Lady Emily‘s dotty, scatter brained dialogue is amusing as she presides over the collected family members in her home. My first Thirkell and definitely not my last. An enjoyable light, perfect for summer read.

“Henry, you mustn‘t mind. It is really a kindness to have him.‘ ‘Well, I do mind, Emily,‘ said Mr Leslie, getting up. ‘Kindness is one thing and your family is another.” 😂
🚙📖Road tripping with this gem has made for a few giggles along the way.

🍓My small burgeoning collection of Virago Angela Thirkell paperbacks all have #TwoWordTitles in #AndItsAugust.
❤️I have loved every hardcover and paperback that I've ever seen Virago produce. One of my favorite publishers.
📚If anyone has some others on their shelves; I'd love to see them!

I've never read anything by this author but am excited to start these books I recently found. These covers though! 😍

Here's a pretty book with a vintage dress on it. #readjanuary #dressesoncover #vmc

I do not pick up paper copies as easily as ebooks on the phone with the little one. But in those rare moments I have to myself I am trying to read this one by Angela Thirkell. She's one of my go-to comfort reading authors after all.
