True Story | Kate Reed Petty
Inventive, electrifying and daring, True Story is a novel like nothing you've ever read before. After a college party, two boys drive a girl home: drunk and passed out in the back seat. Rumours spread about what they did to her, but later they'll tell the police a different version of events. Alice will never remember what truly happened. Her fracture runs deep, hidden beneath cleverness and wry humour. Nick - a sensitive, misguided boy who stood by - will never forget. That's just the beginning of this extraordinary journey into memory, fear and self-portrayal. Through university applications, a terrifying abusive relationship, a fateful reckoning with addiction and a final mind-bending twist, Alice and Nick will take on different roles to each other - some real, some invented - until finally, brought face to face once again, the secret of that night is revealed. Startlingly relevant and enthralling in its brilliance, True Story is by turns a campus novel, psychological thriller, horror story and crime noir, each narrative frame stripping away the fictions we tell about women, men and the very nature of truth. It introduces Kate Reed Petty as a provocative new voice in contemporary fiction.

True Story traces the fallout of a high-school rumour as it reverberates throughout the lives of the subject, the perpetrators, and the onlookers. It sounds simple enough, but it‘s actually a wonderfully complex interrogation of who gets to tell stories and who gets to decide if they are true. A sexual assault sends ripples through the lives of four people in this compelling debut told in a variety of forms including movie script, transcripts, college application essays, 2nd person narrative. I could barely put it down and read it in just a couple sittings.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book is brilliant. Playing with narrative style, voice, and genre, “True Story” examines how trauma shapes us. Who gets to tell stories and why; what is truth, and does it matter? I picked it up on a whim and finished it in less than 48 hours - it is completely engrossing, incredibly creative, and leaves a powerful impression.

TrishB I thought it was very clever! 2y

1999. Two high school boys drive a drunk girl home. The story they tell about what they did will change over time, dividing the school and destroying her life. Years later, one descends into alcoholism; Alice becomes a reclusive ghostwriter; and their intertwined stories play out as horror fiction, a thriller, a series of emails, and film scripts, culminating in a stunning twist. It‘s an extraordinary commentary on power and truth.

When Alice is passed out drunk it is rumoured that two boys sexually assaulted her. The book is split into sections with different narrative styles, some of which worked more for me than others. With touches of Ottessa Moshfegh and Lisa Taddeo‘s writing this was intriguing and definitely not what I thought I was getting. The jury is still out for me as to what happened and my thoughts on this one, the ending in particular, but I *think* I liked it

Thanks for sending this one my way @BarbaraBB I‘m not sure what I was expecting and it took me wayyy too long to actually understand what was happening. I was engaged and I liked parts of the plot/ but in the end the wow wasn‘t so WOW for me. I don‘t think this would have worked for me on audio, so I‘m VERY GRATEFUL for the print copy. This is a total case of #FoMo / the want to read was better than the actual reading!! #CoverCrush ♥️

What a book. You should know nothing about it, just dive in, and get lost in a story that mixes horror, suspense, confession, epistolary and noir in a fantastic way. And the final twist is a great one. Such an original debut and highly recommended!

Megabooks So glad you liked it! 3y
Megabooks Which story was your favorite? Personally mine was To Us - the one with Quinn. So wonderfully dark! My least favorite part was when Nick was cutting hit hand off. Long story, but I‘m not a fan of amputations. It‘s a little different when your a vet and have a clearer picture! I positively love the ending. The only clue you have, if you caught it/look back is a line from when she‘s in Barcelona at the beginning and says ⬇️ (edited) 3y
Megabooks Something like “this is my story and how I choose to tell it.” I definitely didn‘t notice it the first time, but very much the second! It‘s interesting that she writes Richard more as the monster from her memory than the more…meek?…guy he was in real life. Anyway, what are your thoughts?? 3y
squirrelbrain I loved this one too! 3y
Cinfhen I‘m happy to send you the back after I read it @Cathythoughts 3y
Cinfhen And thanks SO MUCH, Barbara xx 3y
BarbaraBB That is cool @Cinfhen another travelling book! @Cathythoughts 3y
BarbaraBB @Megabooks I loved the part about Q too, so creepy, as well as the college application. But I did like the Nick-in-the-cabin part as well. I was completely surprised by Nick being invented by Alice! And I did miss the ‘this is my story‘ part. I was surprised by the monster Richard turned out to be but it made sense when I realized it was Alice‘s story. Such a great plot!! 3y
Cinfhen Why not??? It‘s nice to spread #BookishJoy 3y
Cathythoughts @Cinfhen That‘s so good of you Cindy , Thankyou so much X … but I had an afternoon off & got it on kindle … its hard to put down … but Thankyou 😘 3y
Cathythoughts And for anyone reading these comments , this book is only 2.25 on kindle in this part of the world 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 3y
Megabooks I always forget about the application part. That is a good one. And I liked how she started the book with Nick, as if were too painful to tell her own story. And how she incorporated the good and bad parts of Haley. (Not sure if that‘s how they spelled it. There are about a million ways - Hayley, Hailey, Haleigh, etc.) 3y
Cinfhen Oh wow @Cathythoughts that‘s a bargain!!! I‘ll check the US kindle price 3y
Cinfhen It‘s $11.99 on US Kindle @Cathythoughts so you really grabbed a deal ♥️ 3y
Cathythoughts @Cinfhen I did ! I was delighted … still reading it … it‘s a good read. Thanks again for your kind offer X 3y
BarbaraBB @Megabooks I didn‘t really understand Haley‘s role. Was she indeed one of the guys at the time of the assault? I didn‘t get that part. 3y
Megabooks I thought Haley was the character embodiment of the friend who keeps trying to tell her story. The girl who reconnects with her after the assault. The one she met in NYC before she ran back to Spain and wrote the book. Haley was always trying to tell Alice‘s story in the novel and irl. 3y
BarbaraBB @Megabooks Yes but did she feel guilty? Did she feel she betrayed Alice because she was with the boys that night? At first she seems to be there incidentally (being Nick‘s date), later Richard says she was always with them (“one of the guys”), which makes sense since Nick is Alice‘s invention. 3y
Megabooks Excellent point. Was she a double agent? Trying to play both sides? She definitely had an agenda and seemed to need to use Alice for her own gain. (Like get your own ideas, bitch! Document your own life struggles!) I really liked the way Alice handled her interactions with Haley after meeting with Richard. I think I‘d be pissed if a friend tried to tell of my struggle with pain, even the friend had been with me through all of it. (edited) 3y
Megabooks I‘m so seeing this from Alice‘s point of view that it‘s hard for me to sympathize with Hayley. Maybe her wanting to tell Alice‘s story was a way to atone for her guilt at being so close to the boys, but she wasn‘t hearing Alice at all. And if she really only got in touch after the “assault” what does that say? Was she being a friend then or just as you say, atoning for her guilt. Good question! Not sure if I even answered what you asked! 3y
BarbaraBB @Megabooks I think you did. I think you‘re right about her having an agenda. And it might very well have been a kind of atonement. Great idea! 3y
BarbaraBB Ooh I forgot. I‘m going to use this book for #pop21: A book from your TBR you meant to read last year @KarenUK @4thhouseontheleft @Kalalalatja @Megabooks @Cinfhen (edited) 3y

Alice is a reclusive expat living in Spain whose life was changed by a sexual assault in high school. Nick was lacrosse teammates with one of the guys who did it. Told in alternating vignettes over 16 years, they both fight and succumb to the fallout from that night. Still one of the most creative twists I‘ve read!

A hard review to write because I want you to read it, but I don‘t want to ruin it. Such an enjoyable reread. Thanks @BarbaraBB 😘

Not the best book of the year for me, but interesting. Reminded me a bit of Trust Exercise in the way the story is presented. There are two big secrets revealed at the end but I‘m not sure the journey was worth it. The fact that I listened to this as an #audiobook is probably this one‘s saving grace. I don‘t think I could have done it in print.

This book was nonsensical for more than half of the story. It kept switching the writing style, and cutting off the characters mid sentence, as well as an unnecessary amount of short sentences. I did not enjoy how many sentences started off with “You” instead of the voice coming from the actual character. Like,

“You get a cup of coffee. You go to the train station.”

I wasn‘t a fan.

Mehso-so

This is a weird book and the main character Nick is one of the stupidest males in all of literature. The story revolves around a group of high school students and a sexual assault that occurs during their senior year and the aftermath of it.

TheAromaofBooks I really don't like books where the MC is just plain dumb. (edited) 4y
Cinfhen This book has gotten LOADS of LitsyLove so it‘s refreshing to see another opinion. I‘m still curious to try it, but right now it‘s super expensive and it‘s unavailable on my online libraries. 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I LOL‘d at your description of that character—so frustrating! 4y

I finished this and thought: What did I just read?! Wow. That was... different, in a good way. Quite a roller coaster of genres, points of view, feelings and writing. I enjoyed it but think it‘s the kind of book you either love or hate with little room in between. It will not be for everyone.

This is one of those books where the less you know going in, the better.
Just know that this is about truth, lies, rumors and their fall out. And about telling our stories, how they shape our lives, and who gets to tell them.
It‘s a mashup of style & format - part high school drama, part thriller/ horror/crime/noir told via straightforward narratives, emails, scripts and annotated essays.
Just know it‘s really good and I could not put it down.

KarenUK Also... look how different the UK and US covers are! 4y
JennyM This sounds intriguing. And it always amazes me how different covers can be for different countries. Would love to be a fly on the wall when they make those decisions 4y
KarenUK @JennyM Me too! These ones don‘t even resemble each other! I almost didn‘t read this because the US cover is so generic, but the UK one with the 4 genre covers on it that hints to the unusual mashup that this book is, would totally have caught my eye! 🤷‍♀️ 4y
BarbaraBB I‘ve just ordered this one. Reviews about it are amazing. And I prefer the UK edition too! 4y

...a thriller, a horror, a memoir, a noir....

What does it mean when the worst happens and you don't remember it?

Just a wonderful examination of what it means when you don't control the story of your own life. Petty uses elements from different genres and formats to fantastic effect. This reminded me of Dana Spiotta's Innocents and Others. One of the best books I've read this year.

BarbaraBB That is quite a recommendation, coming from you! #stacked 4y
Ruthiella Yeah, I‘ve heard great things about this one too! 4y
batsy Intriguing review! Innocents and Others is also on my list. 4y

I needed an audiobook that would pull me in and be riveting enough to power me through all of the weekend‘s household tasks. This did the job! I liked the unique construction of the story and the genre mashup quite a bit. Really engaging on audio.

Wow, what a ride--I went into this totally blind earlier tonight thinking it would carry me through the week, and ended up finishing it in one long sitting! It should be known that there are some pretty heavy trigger warnings for sexual assault in this, but it provides some excellent social commentary in a creative format. Highly reccomended! 4.5⭐

Cinfhen This book is popping up EVERYWHERE!!! Must get to it ♥️ 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen yes, you must! 4y
Cinfhen Remind me @Megabooks is audio good or should I read it on my kindle?? 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen the audio was great! 4y
Cinfhen I just listened to a sample but I was having trouble following along.... maybe I need coffee first @Megabooks 🤪 4y

I really dug in to read this in one (with a snack break) sitting to kick off my #24b4monday goal. It was really unique and I appreciated the creative writing style. I always respect when an author can create space for you to pity a character while also knowing they‘re garbage. Great humanity throughout. Not sure how some of the more fantastical tangents landed for me, but still a great read.

Put on my cherry print socks and my husband told me I looked socksy. We both laughed. We are hysterical people.

Also, this is the bulk of my August book haul, not including two audiobooks, an eARC, and an online secondhand purchase I‘m waiting on.

What books did you get this month?

Soubhiville Too many! Lol. I‘m looking forward to Saving Ruby King by Catherine Adel West, Feedback by Mira Grant, and The Sun Does Shine by Anthony Ray Hinton the most from this month‘s haul. 4y
WhatWouldJaneDo I'm reading Empire of Wild right now and it is incredible! 4y
abookishbutterfly @WhatWouldJaneDo I‘m reading it right now too! 😊 4y
abookishbutterfly @Soubhiville I‘m hoping to read The Sun Does Shine before 2020 ends. Sounds like you hauled some good ones! 4y

I oscillated between feeling like this book was either madness or brilliance, and while it didn't end up firmly landing in either camp, it was ultimately closer to the latter. It could be considered problematic, and not everyone while take to it, but I think it's meant to be that way. One thing's for sure - it's certainly unique! #BOTM

(And if my review has you scratching your head, just wait until you get halfway through this book!)

This book is soooo good - I couldn‘t put it down. The blurb claims that it is a genre-defying mix of a campus novel, psychological thriller, horror story and crime noir, which is true.

I‘m still trying to process parts of it, what actually happened or didn‘t happen and how I feel about it.

Other than that, I‘m not going to tell you anything about it as it‘s one of those you should go into knowing nothing about.

squirrelbrain @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB @TrishB @Caroline2 @jennym - *this* is what Bunny should have been. If you didn‘t love Bunny (I didn‘t) it‘s like a poor cousin compared to this very clever, also weird, also a bit ‘meta‘ book. Try this one instead.... 4y
BarbaraBB Oh this sounds good! I am going to look it up! Thanks for sharing! 4y
Cinfhen I added it to my cart yesterday!! Do u think audio would work?? 4y
See All 24 Comments
squirrelbrain Hmmm not so sure about audio @Cinfhen - trying not to give too much away but there‘s some sections that are annotated letters and also some play scripts so I don‘t think they would work. I know @oryx loved this one too recently - what do you think Emma, does it need to be read rather than listened to? 4y
squirrelbrain I hope you like it @BarbaraBB - better than Bunny anyway! 🤪👍😘 4y
Cinfhen Book is still pricey!!! So let‘s see what @Oryx thinks about audio?? I think @Megabooks read this too??? 4y
Caroline2 Sounds awesome....stacked! 😀 👍 4y
squirrelbrain @Cinfhen - that‘s a bit annoying that it is expensive.... I bet @Megabooks listened to it in less than 27 minutes! #speedfreak 🤣 4y
Oryx @squirrelbrain @Cinfhen I think some bits might be a bit annoying on audio - like the letters, where there is a bit of repetition (for a good reason) - I found I could look for the new text in those, but it could be a bit tedious if you have to listen to full thing each time. Although I think the multivoice cast would add something. 4y
Oryx Glad you enjoyed it Helen - I agree, completely unputtdownable. 4y
Oryx Also, if you had to pick a cover from the 4, which one would you choose? 4y
squirrelbrain I like the bottom left cover @Oryx , but not sure which genre that applies to - what do you think? 4y
squirrelbrain Great thoughts @Oryx - particularly on the multi-cast. I‘ve not yet listened to a book with more than one narrator (still an #audionewbie!) but I really want to try one out.... @Cinfhen 4y
Cinfhen I‘m still deciding on print vs audio / thanks for the feedback Helen & @Oryx and multi narrated casts are UH.MAY.ZING @squirrelbrain 🙌🏻 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I did the audio! It was great. Multiple narrators made it work! Lol...not quite 27 minutes @squirrelbrain 😂😂 4y
eraderneely Ok, when you say horror can you rate it on the scary meter? 0-5 creepy ghosties 👻 4y
squirrelbrain I definitely don‘t do horror and this was fine for me - don‘t want to give anything away but a cabin in the woods with some weird goings-on. More creepy than horror. @eraderneely 4y
eraderneely A creepy cabin in the woods with some weird goings-on sooooounds scary....will it really be ok? 4y
squirrelbrain As long as you‘re not planning to read the book whilst staying in a creepy cabin in the woods, Emily, you should be fine! @eraderneely 4y
eraderneely It‘s getting so much love, so I want to read it. Thanks for the advice! 4y
squirrelbrain Go for it @eraderneely - you won‘t regret it! 4y
JennyM Thanks for the rec @squirrelbrain #stacked! 😘👍 4y
LeahBergen Ooo, stacked! 4y
Oryx I think I like the same cover. I do like the horror one, but it's not as horror-y as that cover would suggest. 4y

This was a great, thought-provoking read. I found it really suspenseful in parts. It's the story of an event that happened to a girl in high school, and how the story and it's repercussions are experienced by different people. It's completely unexpected and for me, was totally gripping. First book in a long while that I've finished within 24hours.

Mitch What a strange and intriguing cover! 4y
Oryx @Mitch I really like the cover - it definitely sold the book too me initially. It's kind of reflecting the book, where the story is different depending on perspective - horror, noir, ya, thriller, memoir, etc 4y
Mitch @Oryx sounds really interesting and really difficult book to write! 4y

JamieArc Someone posted this book a few days ago, and I thought she had purchased 4 different covers, and thought it was so interesting the covers were so different 😂 4y
Oryx @JamieArc so you can buy them with the individual covers from goldsboro books, which I think is exclusive to them. I'm not sure which one I'd pick! https://www.goldsborobooks.com/author/kate-reed-petty 4y
squirrelbrain I have this as a #netgalley ARC, hopefully I‘ll get round to it soon..... 4y
