This #nonfiction #chunkster read left me in awe. To read about her experiences through so many heartbreaks, war, and how her life was forever changed and how she took those experiences and shaped how she lived her life authentically. Highly recommend this book.

LeeRHarry I read this many years ago at university and it has still stuck with me - heartbreaking 💔 1y

Just a DNF for now. Made it to page 100 a few years back and set it aside for some reason. I fully intend to get back to it eventually.

rabbitprincess I also DNF‘d but would like to read this eventually. I found the Penguin edition hard to read physically, maybe because of the line spacing. I hope to find this in another edition. 2y
Leftcoastzen On my list but I know I have to be in the right mind set . Lucky that I found a hardcover. 2y

Books that left a deep impression on me

@SaturnDoo would you like to play this game?

LeeRHarry Me too - a couple of my uni friends gave me my own copy when I went to study overseas and it has stayed with me ever since 😊 5y
Amiable I‘d never heard of this one —sounds really good! 5y
andrew61 I was only thinking of rereading this one soon as i picked up testament of experience lasy year but want to reread this first. Great choice. 5y
CarolynM @Amiable I hope you will read it, it's an important book. 5y
CarolynM @andrew61 Have you read her diaries from the period? It's interesting to see what she left out or rationalised, particularly in relation to Roland 5y

Vera Brittain on provincialism: "Artificial classifications, rigid lines of demarkation that bear no relation whatsoever to intrinsic merit, seem to belong to its very essence, while contempt for intelligence, suspicion and fear of independent thought, appear to be necessary passports to provincial popularity."

Just Brittain‘s thoughts and musings but she has a unique perspective and everything she has to say is interesting. Couldn‘t put it down- a family favorite

When you go to a church sale and find a few books for $2.50,including the next Silva you need to read , it‘s a good feeling. The Gore Vidal with multiple novels is from the old Quality Paperback Book Club! I‘m sure some of you remember them.

In 2014 on the 100th anniversary of the start of WW I, I decided to start reading some of the literature to arise out of that war. Vera Brittain‘s memoir focuses on her time as a nurse, inspired by her relationships with her fiancé and her brother. Her prose is candid & emotionally devastating; her poetry & Roland‘s, poignant. Don‘t be daunted by the length. It‘s a female voice on the subject of war that deserves to be heard this Memorial Day.

BarbaraBB Such a good read. And so painful that WWII was yet to come 💔 6y

This narrator is ruining it for me. Sounds like a 2 ppd smoker, and her voice flys all over the vocal range, squeaking in the highs and then dropping so low I can barely understand her 🙉

ReadingOver50 The last few audio books I picked up I DNF any of them because the narrator irritated me. 7y
knp4597 I‘m trying so hard to plug through it, this has been on my TBR list for awhile! But I don‘t know if I can take another 20 hours of her voice . . . 7y

Spotted this at a bookshop. A memoir from a journalist who took part in WWI when she was young.
Sounds like something l need to read for my research.

Itchyfeetreader I read this years ago - from memory it‘s an interesting insight into a very middle class experience of the ‘war at home‘ and also touches effectively on the post war experience especially for women who had lost loved ones and been more active outside the home and were then expected to disappear back again. I think it also includes her very touching poem Perhaps. 7y
JazzFeathers @Itchyfeetreader Sounds exacly what l need. Does it cover women going to university too? I'm finding it so difficult to find material about women at univerdity in the 1920s 7y
Itchyfeetreader I found my copy and also my copy of her letters during the war (tagged!) It does cover the time that Vera goes back to uni after the war but I‘d say anacdotal content only in memoir form - it‘s not footnoted for example. 7y
Itchyfeetreader On women at university have you looked at blue stockings by Jane Robinson (confess not read but it‘s been recommended to me as ‘my sort of thing‘) might also be worth looking at the histories of the ladies colleges at oxbridge. A bit before your period but also maybe something that includes the Langham Place group? Apologies if pointing you to things you have already looked at - am off sick here and miss my history some days ! 7y
JazzFeathers @Itchyfeetreader l appreciate it so much! I'm still in the first stages of research, so even just names are use full to me. 7y

This is one my favorite reads of 2017. Vera Brittain not only defines WWI and what it was like but she defines what it is to be a strong female in a time when that's unheard of. I smiled, I cried and I learned in this one.

I really enjoyed this movie, so I guess I should read the book...any fans of it here? Alicia Vikander's character and performance were captivating, great supporting cast, and I loved the art direction and cinematography.

Penny_LiteraryHoarders Alicia gave a great performance too in the Light Between Oceans! 7y
Christine @Penny_LiteraryHoarders Ooh yes, I have heard that, must put that on my to-watch list (and I haven't read that book either)! 7y

In this book Vera Brittain describes her memories of WWI, when she was in her early 20s. It is a moving story because so much is happening and the effects of it on Brittain are painfully clear. It is hard to imagine Vera's life during the war. She is so brave and lonely, she loses het youth and so much more. The fact that she writes the book in 1933 and doesn't know what is yet to come, makes it even more painful and powerful. #1001books

Latest review on the blog features Testament of Youth by Vera Brittain. An absolutely stunning read!

CoveredInRust I watched the recent film adaptation (because Colin Morgan and Kit Harrington) and it was superb. I must read this. 8y
TheSloanRanger @CoveredInRust I saw the movie first and I was blown away, but the movie only covers such a short part of the book - it's definitely worth reading, because you get to see so much more of Vera's life! It's a much broader examination of war than the film suggests, and she's such a talented writer! 8y
CoveredInRust Wow! Good to know. I'm actually going to be near a bookstore tomorrow. I definitely need to look for this one. 8y

Phew! I confess that once the war ends (spoiler alert?!) I skimmed through some of the bits about the League of Nations, but V. B. ends the book on a strong note -- becoming a published writer and making a difficult but important personal decision. And now I'm excited to see the film!

"In spite of the feminine family tradition and the relentless social pressure which had placed an artificial emphasis on marriage for all the women born, like myself, in the eighteen-nineties, I had always held and still believed it to be irrelevant to the main purpose of life." V. B. would be disappointed in how common this tradition and pressure remain in 2016.

A nurse in WWI, Vera Brittian later wrote about her experience and how it led to her lifelong pursuit of peace.
This was the first memoir I remember reading, and still one of the most powerful stories I've read.
