Sisters Brothers | Patrick DeWitt
SOON TO BE A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE STARRING JAKE GYLLENHAAL, JOHN C. REILLY AND JOAQUIN PHOENIXA BOOKER PRIZE FINALIST AND A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: Publishers Weekly - Amazon - Hudson Booksellers - Washington Post Hermann Kermit Warm is going to die. The enigmatic and powerful man known only as the Commodore has ordered it, and his henchmen, Eli and Charlie Sisters, will make sure of it. Though Eli doesn't share his brother's appetite for whiskey and killing, he's never known anything else. But their prey isn't an easy mark, and on the road from Oregon City to Warm's gold-mining claim outside Sacramento, Eli begins to question what he does for a living-and whom he does it for. With The Sisters Brothers, Patrick deWitt pays homage to the classic Western, transforming it into an unforgettable comic tour de force. Filled with a remarkable cast of characters-losers, cheaters, and ne'er-do-wells from all stripes of life-and told by a complex and compelling narrator, it is a violent, lustful odyssey through the underworld of the 1850s frontier that beautifully captures the humor, melancholy, and grit of the Old West and two brothers bound by blood, violence, and love.

Mehso-so

Mixed feelings on this one. I continue to enjoy Patrick Dewitt's writing talent; this book has a particular style, different from The Librarianist, but seamless in matching the tone of the book: at once snappy and brutal, occasionally meandering and contemplative. It feels like DeWitt set out to write something that echoes the first generation of westerns/adventure books, 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? but wanted to make it a little more honest, or just dark, in confronting the lonely, hardscrabble existence and prevalent greed of gray morality/amoral gunmen amidst gold rush prospectors. I had a rough time with the level of animal cruelty casually discussed, even as the narrator seemed to fluctuate in his levels of apathy and shame regarding the treatment of his horse. 23h
Robotswithpersonality 3/? Suffice to say there's a not particularly enlightened view of sex workers demonstrated. Less a moral tale of bad people coming to bad endings, than a tale of equity, everybody's struggling, likely to do wrong, grasp what they can, and moments of tenderness between brothers, friends or potential lovers are short-lived. 23h
Robotswithpersonality 4/4 I can't see recommending it because a key element to my overall rating of a book is how I feel throughout, but I can't fault it on a narrative or technical level. It told a story in a unique way with a specific ending that feels purposeful. 🤷🏼‍♂️

⚠️animal death, animal cruelty, fatphobia, racism, slur, alcoholism, gore

#Two4Tuesday @TheSpineView

1. Easy one this month. The Sisters Brothers is my favorite Patrick DeWitt novel and maybe the best book I've read all year.

2. Escape Velocity. I've already read all 5 of Charles Portis's novels, so this collection of articles, short stories, scripts, and other miscellany is the last new-to-me writing of his I'll ever get to read.

I noticed many reviewers on Goodreads who didn't care for Undermajordomo Minor mentioned this book as their favorite Patrick DeWitt novel. While I really enjoyed both books, I have to agree this one was a step above. The Charles Portis comparisons are more obvious here, as Portis is the only other author I can think of who's written a western with a similar tone - not exactly surreal, but not wholly realistic; hilarious; violent; and tons of fun!

RaeLovesToRead This was my fave DeWitt so far too! Made me feel like I was living in Red Dead Redemption 12mo

Someone on a podcast said this was the funniest book they ever read. I don‘t agree with that but there were some LOL moments. And I liked the idea of a poetic romantic sort of accidentally ending up as a hired gun.

I don‘t know if Charlie and Eli Sisters are bumbling idiots posing as ruthless killers or ruthless killers posing as bumbling idiots.
That being said, the only character in the book I cared about was Tubs, who was a horse.
There were some ok things about the story. Eli had some decent character development but I didn‘t care for the rest. I picked it thinking it was a comedic western, it was more obtuse than funny.

Thank you to @emilyhaldi for including this on her #newyearwhodis list. I‘m not sure I would ever have read this one if not for her.

Westerns, when done right, are so amazingly atmospheric, and The Sisters Brothers is no exception. The brothers are so different, but I found myself drawn to both of them, especially Eli. It takes a great author to get the reader to root for two assassins, but DeWitt accomplishes it. I also loved Tub the horse!

I didn‘t know much about this book when I started reading it. I‘m not a big fan of the western genre and the writing style is a bit odd, but as I got into the book I felt like it worked well. The book definitely doesn‘t romanticize the Wild West and being written from the perspective of the “bad guy” made it more interesting. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this read. 7.5/10

None of the books I was planning to read today were keeping my attention so I picked up this one and was 50 pages in in what seemed like a second. The Sisters Brothers were famous headhunters in the Oregon/California area. The book follows Eli and Charlie as they hunt down Hermann Warm. This is no John Wayne western. Cowboy noir has arrived. DeWitt is able to create sympathy for dim bulb Eli and hair-raising horror for too wily for his own good Charlie in this picaresque/psycho-drama destined to become a cult classic.. Eli Sisters is a cross between Forrest Gump and a questioning Socrates on horseback, Smith and Wesson at his side, a seemingly simple-minded anti-hero who leads an examined life.

erzascarletbookgasm @Eyelit should be fun to watch, great cast. 😉 5y
TheEllieMo I haven‘t read this one, but have read another by De Witt. I enjoyed it but it was a little odd in places. To the extent that my book club now use the phrase “it‘s all gone a bit De Witt” when things go a bit weird!😂😂 5y

Somebody explain. I don't like violence or Westerns or psychos or killing sprees or hired guns or the #GoldRush but I love this book. I took it up because other Littens liked it and I like two of the author's other books pretty well, “Final Exit“ especially. Charlie and Eli have me m-e-s-m-e-r-i-z-e-d. I can't put it down and I can't figure it out. It could not be less “me.“ Why oh why? #western #blackhumor

mcctrish I feel the same way about this book 5y
Aimeesue Clearly the clever double image cover has you mesmerized. 5y
jillrhudy @mcctrish We Litsy to feel that we are not alone!

jillrhudy @Aimeesue It's a great cover. Highly stylized. There are two kinds of popular covers now, the super stark with iconography, and the kind with flowers, hair, parts of animals, vines, and so forth woven through the text of the title--which I don't care for AT ALL. Anything that impedes readability is not a librarian's favorite thing. You can't assume great eyesight on the part of the public. 5y

Pickpick

Western but not spaghetti, some strange merge of genres, that at first I did not know what to make of. I still don't, but I liked it, and think a lot of people ought to read it.

#readingUSA2019 adding 12 more books to my tally! Tagged book is a western set in Oregon. It was quirky, dark humor, I enjoyed it!

BarbaraBB I read this one too for Oregon! Great map. How was the Prince book? 5y
Librarybelle You‘re doing great! And, I really like the representation between author and setting. 5y
AnneFindsJoy @BarbaraBB I liked the Prince book a lot! Mayte is a sweet soul , and she told her story very honestly and with grace! And It was fun to get a peek into Prince‘s world! 5y

Mehso-so

A solid “meh”. I didn‘t hate it nor did I absolutely love it. It was a quick read and I found myself reading 50 pages at a time without even realizing it. I‘d say 3.5 stars out of 5; worth reading if you can borrow a copy but not worth buying (or paying over $0.50, which is how much I paid LOL)

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Gonna watch the movie? 6y
MaggieCarr I about lost my stomach at the horse's eye + spoon section. Totally agree with your review. 6y
Aims42 @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I'm not sure yet. I rarely like movies made from books, but since I didn't love this book to begin with, maybe I would enjoy the movie....? Jury's still out LOL 6y
Aims42 @MaggieCarr Yeahhhhh, I saw where that paragraph was going and skimmed to the end of it 😖 Yuck!!! 6y
