Pickpick

Velvet‘s soulful connection with Pie and all her horses-even the paper ones & her special bond with her mother were the highlights for me. How cool that Charlotte Brew(bottom left) was the first woman to ride in the Grand National in 1977. And last year, Rachael Blackmore(top right) became the first woman to win the Grand National in the 182-year history of the race. Thanks Enid, for planting the seed.🙌🏻

Pickpick

First off, I can't believe I never read this book growing up. I was a classic horse-book girl, and this one is pretty famous! But the sad truth is that I probably would never have picked it up if it wasn't this month's #childrensclassicread! I'm glad I did as I did enjoy this story a lot, but I also found it to be quite odd. I think maybe because it didn't actually feel like a horse story at all. Training, and even most of the big race, happened⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) off-page. We rarely see Velvet's thoughts and I honestly never understood why she was so passionate about racing The Pie because we only saw incredibly rare glimpses of her interacting with him on-page. This was a fun story as a slice-of-life tale - I fell in love with the entire Brown family, and some of Bagnold's wry observations made me smile. I loved the complete and utter lack of romance between Velvet and Mi, and the utter ⬇ 3y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) randomness of Donald's wild stories. But for all that, it's still just a soft pick for me - not one I see myself rereading. The actual story was odd and disjointed and frequently felt like it was going nowhere. We spent significantly more time on the aftermath of the race than the race itself. I felt completely ripped off that the race wasn't from Velvet's perspective! There's an entire side story with all these other horses that felt ⬇ 3y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) odd and unnecessary. So, on the whole, a perfectly engaging story, but one that I wouldn't particularly label as a genuine Horse Story, despite the presence of multiple horses, and not one that I see myself rereading time and again.

Thanks so much for this pick @TheBookHippie - I'm genuinely so glad that I finally read this one!! I've been meaning to for decades! 😂

TheAromaofBooks @rubyslippersreads @UwannaPublishme - I have to admit that the spit jar was too much for me 😂 3y
TheAromaofBooks @Leftcoastzen - Thank you!!! I had a huge collection when I was growing up but gave many of them to my younger sister when she was old enough to start playing with them (I always thought of them as toys rather than collectibles haha) but I retained several of my very favorites for my permanent collection. 😁 3y

Repost for @TheBookHippie:

JUNE #ChildrensClassicRead2022

Every morning for the past four years I have taken my coffee and my selected #ChildrensClassicRead for the month and read for ten minutes.
It is an amazing way to start the day.

Read along, post your review, or any fun findings with the hashtag and tag me! It‘s such zen to read these! And yes I plan on watching the movie after!

This is the June selection! Should be easy to find.

Its 1am and my 11yr old and I can't sleep.
We decided it would help us to listen to a newly borrowed audiobook, National Velvet.
I don't own it and I've never read it but I fondly remember watching the movie on Sunday's when I was growing up.
Looking forward to listening with my girl ❤

While signing up, I thought about a cat I once owned, Pie Pie (named for National and International Velvets). I like the color cherry red. I like Twin Peaks but that's just a coincidence. I'm medically ketogenic ("magically delicious"). Uninterested in sugar. Fried cheese, however...

I don't know how many of y'all went through the horse phase, but for this #FunFridayPhoto, I had to choose National Velvet. The movie is fantastic and I adored the book, so much so that my college dorm was adorned with the movie posters and I've always kept my childhood copy with me. 🏇Also, I still take weekly dressage lessons. #HorsePhase4Life

KVanRead ❤️the movie! Need to read the book. 8y
katrrosee @KVanRead It's a completely different story between movie and book - but both are good so why not? 😇 8y
Autumn Yes! Loved this book! The Black Stallion series was my all-time favorite though. Good for you that you still keep up with your riding--I miss it so much🐎 8y
