The Darwin Awards
The Darwin Awards: Evolution in Action | Wendy Northcutt
33 posts | 12 read | 8 to read
With over a quarter million copies in print and six months on The New York Times bestseller list, The Darwin Awards shows that readers crave humor. And what better place to find it than in the stories of those human beings who improve the gene pool by removing themselves from it in a sublimely idiotic fashion. Marvel at the thief who tries to steal live electrical wires. Gape at the lawnchair jockey who floats to a height of 16,000 feet suspended by helium balloons. And learn from the man who peers into a gasoline can using a cigarette lighter. All contend for Darwin Awards when their choices culminate in magnificent misadventures. These tales of trial and awe-inspiring error-verified by the author and endorsed by website readers-illustrate the ongoing saga of survival of the fittest in all its selective glory. The Darwin Awards vividly portrays the finest examples of evolution in action, and shows us just how uncommon common sense can be.

Kaye Hi Ryan. I voted but haven‘t read hardly any of the listed books, didn‘t see any of the movies or tv and didn‘t know any of the authors. I tried ! I can see by this that I don‘t read a lot off the “ popular books” category ! 😱 (edited) 6y
LibrarianRyan @kaye that is perfectly okay. I haven‘t read many of these myself. 6y

@LibrarianRyan created the form to nominate the books and now it‘s time to vote. I question some choices in some categories, but it was cool to see what people submitted. Vote here:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeHgb7HG5oNzTSiBAuCnj4g6o0B2KOEytjk9-KM...

LibrarianRyan I made some of those same questions believe me. When this is all over I‘m going to ask for feedback. I saw some unexpected Ed things this year. 6y
Lexeegee @LibrarianRyan I was going do the survey. However the horror section is really not okay. Just why? 6y
LibrarianRyan @Lexeegee I left things as nominated. I moved only one title which was an adult romance in the picture books. Plus for some of them I can kind of see what the nominative was thinking. I may not agree with it but I tried to stay true to nominations. Plus when everything is over I plan on doing a survey for thoughts on things I had problems with. 6y
WanderingBookaneer @LibrarianRyan : Thank you for your diligence. Don‘t fret too much. These things are out of your control. 6y

WanderingBookaneer I woke up from a nap, saw the tag, thought you were nominating me for a Darwin Award. I was troubled because I‘m very much alive and wondered if you were psychic and were trying to tell me something by this. 6y
LibrarianRyan @WanderingBookaneer 🤣🤣 not today. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan I love that Fear is a horror book. 6y
LibrarianRyan @jpmcwisemorgan I did not nominate it there, but I understand and do see how it is a type of horror so I left it there. 6y
LibrarianRyan @WanderingBookaneer so question were some of the a Lear‘s categories For you Fear in Horror and Circe? in Fantasy 6y
MCYmermaid Thank you for your work!! 6y
LibrarianRyan @MCYmermaid you are welcome. I won‘t lie, I‘m sitting here watching the results change as people vote and I love it. ❤️❤️ 6y
Cinfhen Thanks for putting all that together 🙌🏻❣️😀 6y
WanderingBookaneer I thought Fear was hilarious in Horror, but yes. Those were 2 that I wondered about. 6y
LibrarianRyan @WanderingBookaneer I agree. I laughed at fear but at the same time I could see it. I would never put it there but I wanted to keep things as close to nominates as possible. I moved one book. Someone put an adult romance book in picturebooks. And Circe Or 7 1/2 death I would never put in fantasy. I‘m a purist. But others not so much. 6y
WanderingBookaneer Historical Fiction was one that had Lady‘s Guide to Piracy and Petticoats and The Mermaid & Mrs. Hancock which for me would be more fantasy. 6y
WanderingBookaneer I agree with your previous statement. 6y
LibrarianRyan @WanderingBookaneer I also wanted to disallow what I assume are authors nominating their own books. There is one book that no one on Litsy but the author has posted about. So it makes me wonder. Partly why I want to get opinions for next year. 6y
LibrarianRyan @WanderingBookaneer I see what you mean about pirates and mermaids. Pirates I would have put in YA and I would have to look more at mermaid. 6y
Soubhiville I voted on the categories I‘ve read from. This is fun, I can‘t wait for the results! I‘ll share in a couple days when your post isn‘t quite as prominent. 😊 6y
Kaye I voted on those I‘ve read. Looks like I need to put a bunch on library holds. I didn‘t read many off these lists ! Thanks for the tag Ryan. 6y

Enjoyable if not a bit repetitive by the end. We humans seem dedicated to ending ourselves in the oddest, and amusingly ironic, ways possible.

Well... that was... depressing! Virtually every single thing I wanted to nominate was published in 2016. A long scan of my shelves revealed that I seem to be missing a Phryne, didn‘t read/ finish any pure fiction, middle grade or adult fantasy/sci-fi this year and I am really stretching my nomination for Historical Fiction (it could be YA). I also didn‘t like a lot of what I read enough to nominate it for “best book of the year”... Hmmm.

Betty I had the same problem too. Nominated only two books 7y
GlassAsDiamonds @Betty kind of surreal, Hu? I was so excited pulling things off my shelves then filliping them open and wondering time and again how they were so much older than I thought!!! 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ 7y

Hey everyone, there is still time to get your nominations in for the #LitsyAwards. The categories are above.

Rules for nomination:
You must have read the book
It must be published in 2017.

More rules on the nomination page. Please include authors of books.

https://goo.gl/forms/y59AzFYmIKnL8eHC2

Cinfhen Such a fun idea🎉 7y
GlassAsDiamonds It worries me that one of the rules needs to be “has read thing claiming to judge”...🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ (not disputing that it‘s a necessary rule, just .... despairing over the state of the world ). 7y
LibrarianRyan @GlassAsDiamonds I added that as a rule just for nominations. I didn't want a good reads thing where people are giving a book 5 stars that has no title and a vague release date. Since I don't collect names I have no way to tell and are working on the honor system. 7y
See All 8 Comments
GlassAsDiamonds @LibrarianRyan oh yeah, that drives me INSANE (along with those “no, don‘t read that and make up your own mind, blindly BELIEVE ME!!” Types). 😊 It‘s a good, needed rule. But a worry. 7y
tpixie Fun idea!! 7y
DivaDiane I notice there is no way to nominate poetry. Can that be added belatedly? It‘s about the only thing I read that‘s current (ie published in 2017). 7y
LibrarianRyan @DivaDiane you can nominate poetry under Non Fiction. I'll keep that in mind for next time. 7y
DivaDiane Ok, will do. 7y

#TBRtemptation post 13! This is the 6-month-long NYT bestseller that started the cultural phenomenon! Marvel at how uncommon common sense is with a series of stories that will make you laugh and cringe: the thief who steals electrical wires with the current still on; the lawn chair who floats up 16,000 feet with helium balloons; the man who looks into a gasoline container with his lighter. And many, many more. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎
