Annotated Hobbit (Revised and Expanded)
Annotated Hobbit (Revised and Expanded) | J R R Tolkien
48 posts | 20 read | 6 to read
As a reader's introduction to Tolkien's Middle-earth, this guide contains references to the ancient history of this imaginary world which, though rarely explained, contribute greatly to the effect of Tolkien's art. This edition authoritatively illuminates the novel's antecedents and curiosities. Illustrations.

I'm so behind in the #FellowshipOfTolkien reading of The Hobbit, as well as the other books I've been reading that I'm joining #20in4 with a goal of reading for 20 hours this weekend. I don't have to work tomorrow, so I should be able to pull it off.

Happy Tolkien Reading Day!
I finished listening to The Hobbit last night, and spent some time this morning with the notes and illustrations in my annotated edition. I love this illustration of Smaug, and the lines from Bilbo‘s poem seem a perfect ending to another reread.

I‘ve stayed caught up listening to chapters of The Hobbit, and tonight I spent a little time perusing the illustrations and notes in my print edition with supper. I always enjoy the “Barrels out of Bond” chapter as Bilbo continues to figure out how he can truly be independent, innovative, and helpful to the dwarves.

I‘ll probably listen to the audio for the most part during this readalong, but I also love the annotated edition of The Hobbit. In chapter 1, “An Unexpected Party,” there are several different illustrations featuring Bilbo & Gandalf. These 2 are from the 1975 Romanian edition & the 1962 Portuguese edition.

#FellowshipOfTolkien

gossamerchild I own this copy of The Hobbit and I adore it. 2y
Daisey @gossamerchild Agreed! It‘s fantastic! 2y
JazzFeathers There are so many, unusual illustrations in the Annotated Hobbit. I find it refreshing, because it seems as if Peter Jackson visuals have taken over any imagination of Middle-earth in the last couple of decades. 2y
Daisey @JazzFeathers Yes, it really is my favorite part of the annotated version. 2y

This was an impressive reading month! I read several great #middlegrade books in the last few months, but I think The Length of a String is my favorite.

I won‘t be finishing any more books tonight, but I‘m probably going to start a new book and wait to post year end stats tomorrow. Happy Reading! 📚

I finished the last chapter of The Hobbit today, and again I loved this story. It‘s interesting to consider it with more depth after reading The History of the Hobbit and so much of Tolkien‘s writing the last few years. I appreciated the footnotes, but since much of that information was familiar from other reading, my favorite aspect of this edition is the variety of illustrations.

Monday morning breakfast and a book! The more of Tolkien‘s work I‘ve read, the more I am fascinated by the dwarves. I think that Tolkien changed his own perception of the dwarves of Middle-Earth as he worked on The Hobbit. In previous reads, I was mostly frustrated with Thorin at this point in the story, but in rereading, I better appreciate the history and depth of his character.

It‘s been tough fitting in all the reading time I might want the last few days, so I‘m compromising a bit. Some days I read our Hobbit chapter, and some days I listen on the way to or from school. Then I read the annotations and enjoy the related artwork when I get home. The audio version is well done, but this is absolutely a book I enjoy more in print.

#ThereAndBackAgain #FellowshipofTolkien

Bookishlie Awesome! I have three chapters to catch up on. Work has kicked my butt!! 5y
JazzFeathers @Bookishlie l hear you. Same here. @Daisey lt sounds a good compromise to me 😆 5y
Daisey @Bookishlie @JazzFeathers Yes, between the end of the semester at school and getting things ready for the holidays, my reading time is rather limited! It's also a good excuse to listen to the audio since I have it. 5y
Bookishlie I‘ll have to get this annotated book too I love annotated editions!! 5y
Daisey @Bookishlie To be fair, I think I've read most of the annotation information in History of the Hobbit, but it is convenient to have the notes alongside. I think my favorite part this time through has been the illustrations from various international editions. 5y

In Chapter 4, I find the giants up on the mountains intriguing and wish there was a bit more about them. Instead we get plenty of goblins. This chapter in the annotated edition includes many different illustrations of goblins, and I think this is my favorite.

#ThereAndBackAgain #FellowshipofTolkien

JazzFeathers I suspect Tolkien's kids were fond of goblins 😂 l too am fascinated with giants. I love that the Mountain becomes alive like that. I also quite like the way they depicted them in the film. 5y

I used money from an early Christmas gift this year to purchase The Annotated Hobbit to go along with our current readalong. It arrived today so I‘m playing a bit of catch up on chapters 2 & 3. I‘m excited to see illustrations from other editions (above center is from the 1973 Slovak edition) and to read the annotations, although I doubt I‘ll get to all of them with this reading.

1. No.
2. The chapter with Beorn.
3. Nothing. No women, though.
4. Ditto @moranadatter
5. I liked his escape from the spiders.
6. I enjoyed the movies when I considered them something separate from the book. I can't compare them, because the movies were... Something else. Still enjoyed them.
#TheHobbitDiscussion @MinDea @freyaheart

freyaheart 3. I know right. Ugh at least we got tauriel in the movie. 7y
gossamerchild @freyaheart I mostly just hated the invented romance. C'mon, really? I didn't really mind any of the other discrepancies. 7y
freyaheart Probably a misguided attempt to draw women into the theater. You know because we only like romance and girly things. Smh 7y
See All 8 Comments
freyaheart They did the same thing with Arwen. She actually had a fight scene in Helms Deep that was cut. It wasn't in the book anyway so meh 7y
gossamerchild @freyaheart Arwen's part was oddly expanded, too, though. In Fellowship, she is not the one that got Frodo to Rivendell. However, I felt like that was Peter Jackson's way of increasing a woman's role and it didn't distract from the story. The romance in The Hobbit movies was just...meh, not necessary. 7y
freyaheart Kili was hot though tbh. Lol. Maybe not by dwarf standards lol 7y
gossamerchild @freyaheart bwahahaha! True. I found that a little distracting. Ah well. I enjoy both for different reasons 😊 7y
JazzFeathers Honestly, l didn't mind the lack of female characters, the story had a lot to tell anyway. When a message is universal, the genre of the characters doesn't really matter, l suppose. I really hateed the romance in the films. Utterly unnecessary and a complete betrayal of anything Middle Earth 7y

The wily, suave, powerful, eminently dangerous creature Smaug represents is a return to ancient and medieval mythic tradition.

Possible inspiration for Lake Town "built not on the shore, tough there were a few huts and buildings there, but on the surface of the lake." These are both theoretical reconstructions of prehistoric lake settlements (pfahlbauten) based on archaeological evidence in Britain and Europe #lotrchapteraday

JazzFeathers I attended a conferece lately. An archeologist who's also a Tolkien fan offered possible archeoligical sites that might have inspired Tolkien, based on the time such sites were discovered, Tolkien's personal and accademuc friendships and the books he kept on his bookshelves. He theorised Lake City might have been inspired by a prehistoric city on the lake in Swizerland... though l don't remember the name of the place 7y
Moray_Reads @JazzFeathers I think that might be one of these illustrations! One of them is definitely Swiss. There's quite a lot of information about Tolkien's archaeological inspiration in 7y

Chapter 8: In which we meet the Elves of Mirkwood but do Tolkien's elves have pointed ears? It's one of those long-running, unresolvable arguments but if the evidence is going to be anywhere outside the main texts it's probably going to be in the languages so this is an interesting point. These nitty-gritty arguments amuse me no end! #lotrchapteraday
