Yosemite
Yosemite | John Muir
10 posts | 4 read | 4 to read
In the spring of 1869, John Muir was looking for means of support to fund his explorations of California's Central Valley region. A ranch owner offered him a job herding sheep in the Sierra Nevada. As he explored the region, he jotted down his keen observations of the scenic countryside, and he eventually became a guide for some of Yosemite's most famous visitors, including Ralph Waldo Emerson. Muir documented these experiences in The Yosemite, first published in 1912. It is at once a vivid, accurate description of the land and a passionate homage to nature. This Modern Library Paperback Classic is a facsimile of the 1912 edition and includes the original illustrations.

1. Many years ago, my grandmother took a winter trip through Yosemite where they rode big transport buses on the cleared roads in the park. I guess they stayed in the lodges at night? Anyway, it sounded like a fun winter vacation.
2. I would bring a tote bag full of books and then spend most of my time looking out the windows.

TheSpineView Sounds beautiful but cold. A fireplace and a book would make it perfect. 2y

A small painting inspired by John Muir‘s yosemite, nothing causes daydreams like that place. Sorry it‘s a lil off topic, but I often paint scenes from books so I figured this may be interesting to some

thereadingpal Such a pretty painting! I haven't read the book and I don't know what it's about, but your drawing is beautiful 3y

Nov 27 #optoutside prompt - REI hosts the #optoutside challenge every year. They close their stores on Black Friday and encourage everyone to go outside for fresh air and adventure. #Optoutside today. Go for a walk. Step outside on your porch. Take a deep breath and be thankful. We are so lucky to live in a world with adventure and the great outdoors. https://www.rei.com/opt-outside

jb72 Gratitude: the great outdoors (it‘s a good movie too), adventures, playing ball with Scout this morning, fresh clean air, waterfalls near my house 4y
TheSpineView Headed to the barn in a little bit. Myself and a small group are going on a trail ride. Perfect weather today to enjoy the outdoors and what better way to experience it but from horseback. 4y

Sorry John Muir, and my husband, who bought me this book...For every beautiful description of a waterfall and “the mountains are calling...” there is a too long too detailed description of pine needles or “in their usual murdering, plundering style” racism. I will always love Yosemite, especially because it is the hubby‘s favorite place on the planet, but this book was painful! 😢🤷🏼‍♀️

I‘ve been away from Litsy for a few days, mostly watching Netflix (The new Queer Eye is so fun). It‘s going to be raining again here all weekend so hopefully I can make it through my #currentreads, I feel like I‘ve been stuck on them for a while.

Also, my husband bought me chocolates the day after Valentines for 1/2 off because he knows I‘m a monster who bites into each of them to see which ones I like. Not a lot of winners in this box. 😂
