The Office: The Untold Story of the Greatest Sitcom of the 2000s: An Oral History | Andy Greene
49 posts | 31 read | 29 to read
The untold stories behind The Office, one of the most iconic television shows of the twenty-first century, told by its creators, writers, and actors When did you last hang out with Jim, Pam, Dwight, Michael, and the rest of Dunder Mifflin? It might have been back in 2013, when the series finale aired . . . or it might have been last night, when you watched three episodes in a row. But either way, fifteen years after the show first aired, its more popular than ever, and fans have only one problem--what to watch, or read, next. Fortunately, Rolling Stone writer Andy Greene has that answer. In his brand-new oral history, The Office: The Untold Story of the Greatest Sitcom of the 2000s, Greene will take readers behind the scenes of their favorite moments and characters. Greene gives us the true inside story behind the entire show, from its origins on the BBC through its impressive nine-season run in America, with in-depth research and exclusive interviews. Fans will get the inside scoop on key episodes from "The Dundies" to "Threat Level Midnight" and "Goodbye, Michael," including behind-the-scenes details like the battle to keep it on the air when NBC wanted to pull the plug after just six episodes and the failed attempt to bring in James Gandolfini as the new boss after Steve Carell left, spotlighting the incredible, genre-redefining show created by the family-like team, who together took a quirky British import with dicey prospects and turned it into a primetime giant with true historical and cultural significance. Hilarious, heartwarming, and revelatory, The Office gives fans and pop culture buffs a front-row seat to the phenomenal sequence of events that launched The Office into wild popularity, changing the face of television and how we all see our office lives for decades to come.

Read this if you know these 9 seasons by heart and want to learn the behind-the-scenes of one of the greatest comedic shows. It's a fun read and focuses on the interesting episodes and off-screen information. I enjoyed the heck out of it. ❤️

My husband bought an Xbox, so this is my life now 🙄 but I am reading a ton so can‘t complain!

I didn‘t really love this book. I don‘t read a lot of nonfiction or books about tv shows, but it was all basically quotes from other people and this guy compiling them. It‘s not a book you could get sucked into because the flow was off. I‘m glad I read it and it was definitely fun to see all those behind the scene thoughts.

My daughter is obsessed with The Office, we binged all the shows together the first few months of the shutdown, and now we‘re going back and listening to the podcasts. 4y

You may have noticed The Office book on my TBR for this month. Well, I am also listening to Jenna & Angela‘s Office Ladies podcast for the first time. So many tidbits I didn‘t know about! Like the fact that Meredith is played by a different actor in the Pilot. And how much Brian (who plays Kevin), changes the character‘s voice over the 1st few seasons. #TIL #nfn2020

This book is for true fans. Excellent interviews with every person involved with the show. I am a true fan and watched it all through my 20s. I definitely learned things about the show. However, parts of the book were slow with different people saying the exact same thing for several pages. You get the sense that people loved working in this show and loved the characters. 3⭐️s

Today I give thanks for The Office. I have 3 TV shows I can quote annoyingly because I will stop & watch all the reruns pretty much any chance I get. Seinfeld, Friends & my #1 show is The Office. Needing lots of humor to get through the past few months, I‘m rewatching it frequently & LOVED the recent cast reunion on SGN. 😍 I‘m thankful the e-book was $5 today, my max price point for buying e-books.🤗

JoScho I just finished it for the first time. It was a lot of fun and I watched that episode of SGN after you posted-made me happy! 4y

While non-fiction, let alone anything that has to do with pop culture and media usually isn‘t my jam when it comes to books, I couldn‘t pass up one written about my favorite show of all time. Great insight, thoughtful, and oddly enough, I got a lot out of it as a writer.

It feels indulgent and out-of-character for me to spend an afternoon making a non-utilitarian craft while listening to a book about a TV show, but it was pretty fun. I'm currently re-watching the show with my family, and it's interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories (at 1.75x). The audiobook would be better with actual cast and crew rather than narrators.

@TheAromaofBooks

ImperfectCJ And I find it a little alarming how much time and how many resources we spend creating and consuming entertainment. I have trouble enjoying myself because I keep thinking about Neil Postman's Amusing Ourselves to Death. 5y
rjsthumbelina I was just thinking today how a majority of my money goes to food and entertainment! But I guess I don't feel too bad about that, most of the time. I feel like finding the joys in life are important, especially in times like these. And, my consumption of entertainment (which makes me happy) also fuels economic spending and helps others make their money! 5y
TheAromaofBooks Great review, and I love the butterfly!! 5y

Scochrane26 Love the butterfly! I don‘t feel bad about spending money on entertainment if I enjoy it. Last yr, 4 of The Office actors came to our area Comic-Con & their panel was so packed they had to turn people away. It was hilarious-they we‘re the actors that play Oscar, Creed, Stanley, & Meredith. 5y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks So pretty!! I‘m making bookmarks when I should be doing #LitsyLove and reading... just feeling blah 😒 5y
ImperfectCJ @rjsthumbelina @Scochrane26 I was talking less about individual spending and more about our spending as a culture. I mean, they spent 12-hour days, 7 days a week putting this show together, they built a mock-up of a rest area and a 4-lane highway for a 33-second scene, they were going to pay $1200 for a fake cat...and that's just one show. It just seems...excessive when there are so many problems confronting the world. I'm in a mood, apparently. 5y
ImperfectCJ @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I almost made bookmarks! I'm having such a hard time getting myself to sit down and do #litsylove. Not sure what's up with me at the moment. Maybe some "blah" here, too. 5y
ImperfectCJ @TheAromaofBooks Thanks! My daughter worked on it with me. I tried not to micromanage too much. 😆 5y
Scochrane26 @ImperfectCJ I agree about the overall spending of the entertainment business. It‘s crazy that millions are spent on stunts in movies, etc. 5y
Susannah This reminds me of a Lite Brite design! (I hope you know what that is. And I definitely mean it as a compliment. 😊) 5y
ImperfectCJ @Susannah I do know Lite Bright... you're totally right! I hadn't noticed the similarity before. I wonder if that's what drew me to the craft kit. 😊 5y

"Throughout the nine-season run of The Office, the Dunder Mifflin warehouse set was the filming location for everything from a brutal all-staff roast of regional manager Michael Scott to the casino party where paper salesman Jim Halpert finally gathered up the courage to tell his long-time crush Pam Beesly, that he was hopelessly in love with her."

Umm...spoiler?

#FirstLineFridays @ShyBookOwl

CareBear How is this book? 5y
ImperfectCJ @CareBear I'm not sure yet. It's not my usual preference but my is working through the series again and it seemed like a good accompaniment. Might be better in audiobook form if it has audio excerpts of interviews. 5y
ImperfectCJ @CareBear I left out a word...my *family is working through the series. 5y

Obviously this book is only for people who love the show. it gives a detailed breakdown of its creation, casting, and the entire run, including character development and key episodes. It was fun to hear about possible plot lines that were discarded. The book gave me a huge respect for the writers on the show and the incredible hard work they did. It will always be a classic to me, though I loved Greg Daniels‘ Parks and Rec even more.

ShyBookOwl Watching Parks and Rec at this very moment lol this is probably my 5th re-watch ❤ The Office is great too 5y

I ordered this for @BennettBookworm because she is more of a serious Office fan than I am. Then I ended up reading it because I didn‘t see her when we were going to (but I‘ll mail it now, Suz). It was really fun! And it prompted me to go watch the series from the start because now I know all these insider things about how it was made. Very entertaining and includes lots of interviews with the cast, writers, network execs, as well as pictures.
