#DecemberDreams

A favorite #Soarkle quote from the always wise Mrs. Gardiner to Mary Bennet in this Pride and Prejudice adaptation/continuation:

“And anyway, in our house, no-one is obliged to sparkle. Which, I find, makes it far more likely that they might.” ✨

Balibee146 I've been interested in this book - would you recommend it? 11mo
DebinHawaii @Balibee146 Yes! Especially if you are a Pride and Prejudice fan. We read it in 2022 as a buddy read (for #PemberLittens )& I really enjoyed it as did the rest of the group. 🤗 11mo

Balibee146 Thanks @DebinHawaii P&P is just about my favourite and most re read book of all time. Fantastic to know this one is good and it is on Kindle Unlimited too. I think I will make it my first book of 2024 👍 11mo
DebinHawaii @Balibee146 I hope you enjoy it! Since we share P&P as our most-lived/most-reread book, I am sure you will! 😉 11mo

#Pemberlittens What a great continuation to our beloved P&P. Mary is a great character and deserves to have her story told. The author did a great job of immersing us into Austen‘s world. Thank you to @sprainedbrain for allowing me to lead our read through and thank you to those who read along with me! See you all for the next Austen-esque read!

#Pemberlittens Ch.91&92 Mary knows she can‘t marry Ryder when she is in love with Tom so she turns him down - Mrs.B is pissed and leaves in a huff. Mary is so depressed, and to make things worse she runs into Caroline who tells her that Ryder is now going to be rich and can Mary promise she‘ll never marry him? The nerve! At least Mary stands up for herself well. Tomorrow we finish the book and see if Tom finally makes us (er..Mary) stop waiting.

#Pemberlittens Ch.89&90 Well, Ryder comes back and apologizes for his free love no marriage idea. He actually proposes for real, the way a lady deserves. But Mary still loves Tom and doesn‘t accept right away. Her mother is badgering her to accept, no surprise there, but even her aunt says…maybe accept Ryder and be secure. Although I wonder how much money he‘d still get from Lady C de bourgh if he married Mary…either way, big decision for Mary now

#Pemberlittens Ch.73-78 Sorry for being MIA! The Gardiners, Tom & Mary are joined on vacation by none other than Ryder, Caroline 😬 and the Hursts. Their idyllic little party is sadly interrupted by snobbery and of course, Ryder - a competitor for Mary‘s attention. Tom is jealous and instead of simply talking to Mary about his feelings, he gives up. And Mary, instead of declaring herself, gets mad. Gah these two! So frustrating!

This week was long & tiring & the book I wanted to pick up & read was this one. At first I was just a bit ahead of the 2 chapters-a-day pace of the #PemberLittens then suddenly I was WAY ahead & finished last night.

I 💚 Mary Bennet & this book that gave her the attention she deserves. There was a lot of set up, awkward pain for Mary & P&P revisiting to get to her finding herself & path but I was happy with it all. A cozy book to curl up with.

LeahBergen This was a fun read. I sped through big chunks of it, too. 😊 3y

Yeah, so I read ahead this week because I needed to get Mary & I out of a funk. I‘m now at Chap 57. Whoops! 🤷🏻‍♀️
Anyway, no spoilers but in Chap 55, they have lemon posset after dinner. I adore possets (just citrus juice, heavy cream & sugar simmered together & set in the fridge) & make different variations like tangerine & lime. Lemon is my favorite though, so below I‘m linking to my blog post with Nigel Slater‘s recipe in ⬇️

DebinHawaii … case anyone is geeky like me & would like to try making it to go with your reading. It really is the easiest of recipes! https://kahakaikitchen.blogspot.com/2017/01/nigel-slaters-lemon-posset-3-ingredi... 3y

#PemberLittens This morning I read 4 chapters (31-34) which take place 2 years after Mr. Collins proposes to Charlotte & (slight spoiler) after Mr. Bennet dies. I read ahead because I NEEDED someone, anyone to be nice to Mary besides Mrs. Hill. Doesn‘t happen. Mary cycles thru the Bingleys, Darcys & Collins & goes from mistreated by Caroline to feeling awkward & ignored at Pemberley to feeling awkward with Charlotte, now Mistress at Longbourn. ⬇️

DebinHawaii …So far they are all letting me (& Mary) down. I need Mary to go someplace where she feels welcomed. Please tell me the Gardiners are going to jump in & help. This girl has got no where else to go! 🥺😢😩 We are over a 1/3 of the way in this book & I am hoping Mary comes into her own soon. I don‘t know how much more I can take! P.S. But only if Mr.Bennet goes to call on him-which he does eventually. Soon, all talk turns to seeing the new neighbours at the next Meryton Assembly. Mary finally decides she must go, if only to stop herself from becoming a complete recluse-and what‘s so wrong with that?

Mary has discovered Fordyce, and his whole "beauty is deceptive and charm is fleeting" schtick makes her super jazzed. She will turn away from vain fripperies and be a woman of good morals! AND she can earn her father's love by making him a book of her favorite selections; they can bond over the written word! Too bad Mr. B is an utter jackass about Mary's faves, and when she desperately asks him to recommend a book, he totally blows her off. *sob*

mollyrotondo He is portrayed very badly in this book. Mary is trying too hard as well. She knows her father is a jerk so stop trying to appeal to him. 3y
Andrea313 @mollyrotondo I hope she gets to the point where she can dismiss her parents' (terrible) opinions, but I also don't blame her for trying to forge a connection with at least one family member! She is so totally isolated. 3y

#200PnPCovers #dancing @CrowCAH @mabell In The Other Bennet Sister, Mary dances twice with a shopkeeper‘s son and sparks outrage in her mother - to think, dancing so familiarly with someone who works for a living! There were so many rules to follow in society, especially at dances, where the world was watching.

mabell I‘m sure it become second nature, but keeping track of all the rules - 🤯! 3y
CrowCAH I agree with @mabell , I‘d forget all the rules. After all, they are more like guidelines anyway 😉 3y
mabell @CrowCAH Ha a Pirates‘ reference! 😄 3y

#Pemberlittens Ch.13&14 - Mary reads that novels aren‘t good for the female mind and believes reading should only be about intellectual gain; she craves her father‘s attention and decides to make him a gift of a book with her favourite handwritten passages only to find that he hates the authors she loves; also he adores Lizzy and will probably never look at Mary the same way…really hoping things start to look up for poor Mary soon!

mollyrotondo Mary just keeps getting left in the dust. Mr Bennet doesn‘t even try to suggest other reads to her. He just says that Mary can go find something on her own. It‘s so true that Mr Bennet doesn‘t hide that Lizzy is his favorite daughter 🤦🏻‍♀️ 3y

#Pemberlittens Ch.11&12 Poor Mary feels guilty over what happened between her and Mr.Sparrow - she hates that she couldn‘t stand up to her mother and society‘s expectations and go with her heart. But then, the more she thinks about it she realizes that feelings and following her emotions will only bring pain to herself and those around her like Mr.Sparrow:He never would have been hurt if she hadn‘t danced with him in the first place-so sad for her

KristiAhlers Love these memes they totally are spot on lol. Not the emotion! Noooo! 3y
DebinHawaii Finally got up & got ahead to chapter 13 & 14. This book is making me so sad for Mary. 😢 3y
SarahBookInterrupted It‘s so sad that Mary is putting the blame on herself and comes to that conclusion. I‘m so glad I‘ve read this before. I forgot how bad it was in the beginning. Poor Mary. 3y

#Pemberlittens Ch.9&10 - the ball at the Meryton Assembly - what a crush of people! All so eager to dance and eat and have fun - Mary is at first a wallflower, sitting with the spinsters and matrons and feels panic until a nice young man - the oculist‘s son Mr.Sparrow, spends time with her! Mary likes him and is having a wonderful time, and dances with him twice, until she is reminded of what her mother might think…or do…this made me so sad 😞

BarkingMadRead I was so angry for her! She was so happy and Charlotte ruined it lol even though she was right about how Mrs Bennett would feel! 3y
MaureenMc So far, Charlotte is coming across as quite bitter. I‘m not sure how I feel about this characterization. 🤔 3y
KristiAhlers @MaureenMc I was just thinking the same thing myself. 3y
peanutnine Ugh and his reaction at the end, when he knows what's up 🥺💔 3y
ElizaMarie It is so surprising to me how well Mary carries herself despite all the negativity and judgment that is facing her all the time! 3y
DebinHawaii @ElizaMarie She really does carry herself well with so little positive reinforcement & so much negativity. 🥺 3y
SarahBookInterrupted Poor Mary, she finally has someone that see‘s her and it‘s ruined because of her horrible mother. I also feel for him at the end. I feel bad for both of them. 3y
mollyrotondo Uhhh I was so happy and then as soon as Charlotte came over I felt sick. Why did her connection with someone have to be ruined? I‘m annoyed! 3y

#Pemberlittens Ch.7&8 - the Bennet girls prepare for the autumn Meryton public ball and Mary is able to get in a dig at Lydia 😄 “Lydia glared from across the table. “Lord, you really are the most annoying prig!” “That may be true,” said Mary, quite calm now. “But at least I shall have the satisfaction of being a prig in a new dress.”” 👏 Also, thank God for Mrs.Hill!

IndoorDame Loving Mrs. Hill! 3y
batsy I've been unable to maintain discipline and have read quite far ahead, so I'm trying not to say anything in case I spoil stuff by accident 😆 it's an absorbing read! 3y
Christyco125 I‘m so very glad that she decided to stand up for herself. Lydia and Mrs Bennet have never been a favorite but they have fallen even further down the list. 3y
KristiAhlers I am enjoying this read way more than I thought I would! 💙 3y
mollyrotondo Mrs Hill is incredible! She is the mother way beyond Mrs Bennet. She actually cares about building up Mary‘s confidence. Not keeping her down. 3y
Ruthiella @batsy Yes, it is VERY easy to keep reading, isn‘t it! (edited) 3y
DebinHawaii Hill is becoming a favorite. I love how she supports Mary. 3y

Hoo boy, here come chapters 5 and 6 to make me hate the Bennet parents. The very first thought I had was that Mr. Bennet was the #BeanDad of his day- smug and self-satisfied and totally hands-off as Mary wanders through the library in need of attention and guidance (anyone else remember those galvanizing, bean-centric early days of '21?). But my anger for him soon vanished because in swooped Mrs. Bennet to make things a hell of a lot worse!

mollyrotondo Wow that Bean Dad story 😬 Mr Bennet is at least realistic and agrees Mary needs glasses and shouldn‘t suffer just because her mother is worried about her appearance. I always believed Mr Bennet was practical. Just not a very attentive father. 3y
Ruthiella Thanks for the BeanDad link! 😳 3y

Catching up on chapters 3 and 4, when Mary decides to go all in on the piano to distinguish herself. Then Lizzy comes along with her charming, charismatic musical style and makes Mary feel about two inches tall. So onto the next thing- Mary wants to learn! Get this girl a governess! Too bad Mrs. B is not inclined toward book-learnin', and Lydia's outrage at actually having to do something kills that idea. So, regroup- onto her father's library!

StayCurious Haha I did like how later the dad was all for Mary reading to lower the level of stupidity in his house that Lydia seems set on flaunting 3y
Andrea313 @StayCurious Yes, that was pretty good! Glad it's not just his obvious fave Lizzy who is allowed in there! But I do wish he'd actually, like...speak to Mary! Maybe ask what kind of reading she's interested in? Come on! 3y
mollyrotondo @StayCurious ohh Mr Bennet pointing out how “empty headed” Lydia is and how everyone knows it was the perfect burn. I‘m not hating him right now. 3y

#Pemberlittens in Ch.5 and 6 Mary discovers joy in reading and learning but soon realizes she may need glasses to continue her newfound passion - easier said than done in Mrs.Bennet‘s household! Thank goodness for Mr. Bennet in this case.

jenniferw88 🤣🤣🤣 I have an eye test in a few weeks' time and the oculist has a sing-song voice - bettER or worse? 3y
KristiAhlers Man if I don‘t have my reading glasses on it‘s not pretty! 🤣 3y
AllDebooks This version of Mary is making me really unsettled. She's a shadow in the Bennet household. I know she's not a main character in the original text, but still. I thought it a real shame that she was ignored by Mr Bennet in his library. She would really flourish with a little guidance and support to nurture her new found love of learning and natural curiosity. Not to mention actual conversation. 3y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @AllDebooks absolutely she would have flourished with a little guidance. 3y
Crinoline_Laphroaig Not rereading because #somanybookssolittletime but following along w/ discussions. This is when book grabbed me. Went back & looked through my Facebook posts & found this: "As someone who has worn glasses since she was 8 years and reads, I've never hated a fictional character more: "The oculist says she needs spectacles to read, but why, I might ask, does she need to read so many books?” - Mrs Bennet 3y
mollyrotondo Mrs Bennet borders on being abusive toward Mary. She takes so much away from Mary. No learning. No reading. Your bad at sewing. You are too ugly and glasses will make you uglier so be blind instead. She‘s disgusting. I never really found her to be this despicable in P&P. Hadlow must have really hated her when she read P&P. 3y
ElizaMarie Ugh this made me so mad at Mrs. Bennet. Poor baby just wants to see!!! 3y
DebinHawaii @mollyrotondo She is so abusive & Mr. Bennet is so annoying with his neglect.😡 3y

#Pemberlittens we learn more about Mary in Ch.3 & 4, that she‘s good at playing the piano and is determined to excel at it even if she no longer enjoys it, and that she loves to read and wants to enhance her education. I am grateful to live where/when I have no limitations to what I am able to read and feel so much sympathy to those who are not in the same situation.

StayCurious I've been trying to tag my list but it is not working for some reason - Or I've tagged you all 16 times - if that is the case, my apologies! 3y
Christyco125 Mary‘s story just keeps getting sadder with every chapter so far. I hope she starts realizing her worth as a human soon.

Also, who wants her kids to remain under educated? I know it‘s the time period but wow!
3y
mollyrotondo Uh the part when Mary asks her mother for a governess to teach them and everyone is against it so her mother turns her down just made me want to scream! Mrs Bennet doesn‘t view Mary as beautiful so she completely dismisses her. Why not try to build up other traits of Mary‘s then. Don‘t just stick her in a corner! 3y
DebinHawaii @Christyco125 I am hoping it turns around for her at some point & she starts coming into her own. 3y

#Pemberlittens And so we begin our reading of The Other Bennet Sister with Chapters 1 and 2 which give us a good introduction to the Bennet family and our main character Mary. Poor Mary! I feel so sorry for her! If anyone deserves to have middle child syndrome it‘s her!

AllDebooks Can I be added to the Pemberlittens, please. I just got this out of the library today and startedNorth and South. 😁 3y
StayCurious @AllDebooks absolutely! I‘ll add you to my tag list and let @sprainedbrain know you want to join! 3y

AllDebooks @StayCurious thank you so much xx 3y
Smarkies Starting this book soon. Please tag me as well. 😁 3y
mollyrotondo Uhh what a heartbreaking start. Mrs Bennet is the worst. I do understand the fear though that this entail brings upon a mother with only daughters. And unfortunately in this time period the only other way to ensure their future now is to have them marry well. But to brush your own daughter aside because of looks is just awful. This author also does a good job of describing Mr Bennet. 3y
Ruthiella Yes, she is sadly left behind sandwiched between her older and younger sisters‘ close bonds. I‘m curious now how this story will move forward. 3y
MaureenMc This author‘s Mrs. Bennet is certainly harsher than Austen‘s. And I have a feeling I‘m going to hate Lydia even more as the book progresses. 😆 3y
AllDebooks I've never taken to Mrs Bennet, too frivolous and vacuous. I can't help but wonder if her opinions on beauty and what matters to a young girl is just a reflection of society's opinion. She is an incredibly self-absorbed person, would she be capable of independent thought and buck the trend? Interesting to see what the author does with Austen's beloved characters. 3y
AllDebooks As for Mary, I do feel for her. She's portrayed as solitary initially, I do hope this changes quickly. I have high hopes she will come into her own as the story develops. 3y
quietjenn Poor Mary! It's definitely easy to be on her side right away. 3y
IndoorDame Great sketch! 3y
StayCurious @IndoorDame I wish I could take credit but I found it on Google. It is great though isn‘t it? 3y
IndoorDame @StayCurious perfect for this book! 3y
Christyco125 I‘m a little behind on my reading but I just finished the first 2 chapters. In P&P, Mary comes off as completely unaware of how prickly and annoying she is. But it definitely makes me have more sympathy for her in this rendition of her character. 3y
DebinHawaii I have always felt a kinship to Mary‘s awkwardness but this book makes me love & root for her all the more. 3y
